nope, her book sucks...it's full of historical inaccuracies and false narratives...and left wing black historians have called her propaganda out as well.
America was founded on liberalism. Most of the founding fathers were abolishinist. America banned slavery before any african country did. Dont be a sheep
America freed the slaves and whites ended the practice of slavery that africans started thousands of yrs ago. Africa still has slaves and the black american ghetto is the most hateful, racist, sexist place in the world. Whos the bigots?

At least The Indians faught and refused to be slaves. African males sold us to white men and when Black men escaped slavery, they left their woman-women-and children.
They speak of the mass exodus from the south in the 1920 - 1940's of just seeking employment and a change of life. When in fact the KKK ran African Americans off their land in fear of their lives leaving inherted land behind to be deeded away. Some people's legacies are ill😢 gotten
They weren't ashamed up to the 20th century when they were creating it. And even today this is reflected in the fact that the 13th.amendment still makes chattel slavery legal via it's exception clause that says that slavery is legal for those duly convicted of a crime. So America is still a roaring hypo rite in 2024.
They're not ashamed, they just don't want their young to know the plight others suffered upon their ancestorial actions. Shame will not bring anger when truth is told.
Food for thought. Imagine if we asked the same people railing against true history being taught in schools, railing against affirmative action, and railing against DEI, if we can exempt all black and brown people from going to fight and die for the country. All of a sudden it would be “different”. Hypocrisy at its finest. Thank you for even attempting to learn about this topic.
I being a white woman At age 73 also a liberal Have been educating myself on the civil rights movement of the 1950’s/1960’s starting with Malcom x. I had no idea about this author’s battle in this day and age upon reporting the truth of her people and the history of this country. I am and will continue to stand with the truth. As our stupid Florida governor has such a proclamation that slaves learned skills by being slaves. Is beyond anything I thought I’d ever hear in the 2000’s. Besides being appalled at such a statement being uttered who could support such a political party from such an appalling statement.
America is multi racial and everyone deserves equality and equity. Jobs that are of authority and high salary should not only be reserved for people who identify as white.

8:09 she says if you actually read the project, it's patriotic. And that's the wild thing. The core essay grapples with why her dad is so patriotic. Then it goes into how Black Americans made America so true to our written ideals
It is a testament to American Blacks that they don't want revenge but want the true promise of America's ideals. And they have proven that they will do the work to get us there. When Obama became president, he didn't work toward revenge, he worked toward equity. THAT is what detractors can't understand. If the roles had been reversed, they would have wanted revenge and they just can't understand that others could want fairness and a level playing field. I am a child of desegregation and it taught me so much. I have much more to learn and I will do that work because I believe as you do, that we CAN be a better nation.
Being a white man myself I am not worried about people pointing out the bad stuff about our nation. Denying it is admittance that it still exists. I like learning from all people. They are just trying to make their way in life like me. And our conversation is seldom about race relations.
You have little to worry about because the truth of black history is seldom heard. White America spends a lot of time squashing the truth and pushing back black progress until it seldom poses any threat. People like yourself should change that!
Given the opportunity, he would. Because he's a massive anti-semite and a huge fan of Hitler. He doesn't so much support Israel, as he really supports Netanyahu, because he really hates Muslims and all people of color.
Thank you, Ms. Jones, for creating and compiling the incredible work, The 1619 Project. I gave this book to my white, Texan father for his 89th birthday, and he is reading every page and experiencing a complete overhaul of his world view. I learned so much from this book, and am already making an outline from which to teach my grandchildren. Thank you!
Nicole Hannah-Jones is a hero of mine. I'm a white woman who grew up in the 60-70's Texas. I knew our founding documents didn't reflect me or my Black or Latino fellow travelers. But even I, someone who thought herself enlightened, became angry the first time I read the 1619 Project. I sat the book aside and came back to it again after their words had time to get past emotion. When I reread the book, I understood better what they wanted me to know. I think this is a good day, a Sunday, to start rereading again.
Kudos to you for recognizing how big a part emotion plays in our cognitive process. The ability to come back to something that is uncomfortable to seek out the full value of it is commendable. I believe this is part of why our political situation of divisiveness is so bad right now. Neither side wants to recognize that there is no righteous side, that the situation is both complex and emotionally charged, and the sometimes (well most of the time) we don't receive information (spoken or written) while we're thinking about our response, our side, what we want to be heard. Difficult times. Thanks for the steady navigation. I hope people ready your comment and think about it.
They aren't scared, they are all dead. All the people 400 years old have been dead for over 300 years and the people that endured everything are long gone. It's safe to go outside now.

The 1619 Project is a definitive milestone in American historical writing. It lucid, accurate and fair. If America wants to progress, it has to be understood as one of the many truths of what America was and how it came to be what it as and a tool to help it become a better form of itself.
Great for a few , Rich landowners in the beginning, that expanded to the typical white American after wwii with a large white middle class and now its regressing again with the middle class and poor getting poorer and rich getting richer. If you ask an English person they would say the war of independence started because a few rich merchants didn't want to pay taxes.
@@MatthewBretton-cu2el they would be wrong in that over-simplification. Like most things, the motivations are various and complex in their interconnections. The attempt at self-correction that is built into the system is profound. What has been discovered is that some safeguards/guardrails need to be legislated not just agreed upon. And that America is an idea as much as it is a geographical entity.

I’m still in the early stages of reading this book. I wish I had access to this type of information and history 30 years ago. It opens your eyes to so many truths and facts about what went on during that time. It has change my life, inspiring me to want to learn more about the past. When you visit the Jamestown settlement, where the first slaves arrived back in 1619, you will find the 1619 Project book in the little shop within the Museum. To Nicole Hannah-Jones, “You are brilliant and courageous”!!!!!!! Thank you for putting together such an important masterpiece of literature. I pray the next generation of young leaders gets introduced to this book a lot earlier than I did.
We have access to this information, we just didn’t seek it out. We didn’t listen to black voices, or read books by black people, like James Baldwin. I was a child when I learned this stuff (granted the book is brilliant and lays things out in an easily digestible way). But it was my parents that brought the information to me, then I just wanted to know more. Especially when visiting historic sites in the south. My challenge to you is to think about why you didn’t know these things, how is the system is set up for/against you? Blessings, and may you use your new knowledge to bless others.
I’m going to disregard your negative comment. You have no idea what I went through as a child. For you to tell me what I had and didn’t have access to is out of pocket. The state of our race within our community has completely eroded because of statements like the one you just made. The days of when our ancestors love, supported and lifted each other up through all that they went through is truly dead and probably never coming back. Your ugly comment just confirmed that. I appreciate the James Baldwin recommendation and blessings. Everything else you could have kept to yourself. I’m not going to let you ruin the journey I’m on. I know when someone is trying to talk down to me. Not having it!!!!!! You want to send me a blessing, please do not send me another comment. I don’t want to hear anything else you have to say. Good Day.
If you took offense to my comment, just please ignore it and move on. I can’t let someone who I didn’t grow up with, tell me what I had and I what I didn’t have access to. Please keep those thoughts to yourself. Thank you.
Oh, that's what you think. You better check Brazil, England,Italy, and all of the other racist countries! You really should read and do some research before you make false comments! Or stop being a parrot and repeat everything you hear!
Trump is the consequence of the neoconservative agenda that began in the 70s’ . Several republicans became concerned by the nineties how influential the neoconservative movement was becoming. The ones with a conscience have passed away and now what’s left behind is the likes of Mitch McConnell the chief architect of the anti democratic movement in the US . The republicans under his leadership ushered the rise of Trump and his MAGA movement. Mary Trump was one of the first people to call out McConnell and it’s amazing how little attention is ever paid to him considering the damage he has caused to the nation that will take decades to recover.
I agree. I found it odd that he equated her project -which he said was truthful-with poking the bear. He’s actually unintentionally making a statement - that ppl at top of American hierarchy want to hide the truth. They are liars.
I have not read this woman's writings. However, I have studied the antebellum period of American history and specific events leading up to the Civil War. The 2nd Amendment was written by James Madison and Patrick Henry, two large Virginia slave owners, to protect state militia slave patrols. All able bodied white men in the antebellum South served in the state militias to enforce BLACK CHATTEL SLAVE LAWS. The 2nd Amendment isn't about protecting freedom but about keeping black people in chains. Plantation cotton growing was America's biggest cash export commodity in the antebellum period. The whole entire antebellum South was a police state, very similar to a modern fascist or communist police state. American slavery was extremely violent. Those 2nd Amendment state militia slave patrols enforced black chattel slave laws with the mounted militiamen on horseback, the lash, the musket, bloodhounds and hangman's rope.
Our history is complicated. Much of it is good, some of it is bad, and some of it is very ugly. The whole of it should be told, not just the good parts. Trying to whitewash it is wrong and detrimental to our understanding of who we are as a nation.
The Black history I learned in school was remedial compared to what I learned at home. Why do people think that by not mentioning it, it will “go away” somehow. I will say that “talking” about it isn’t going to make me vote for one party over another. It’s cool you’re mentioning it, but actions speak louder than words…
In today's world Black history is still not taught in the public schools system. Even during Black history month they don't teach anything about Black history. I ask one Black teacher why is it that you are not teaching anything about Black history during Black history month. The answer was they won't let us. And who's the they? They are those who are in charge. And we know who's in charge.

As a minority I never experienced racism and even if I did, I never registered it because I'm not looking for racist. I'm not out here hunting to see whether or not someone's being racist to me. That's an insane way of looking at the world. And even if I lost some opportunities due to racism, I never let that stop me from achieving my goals because no obstacle gets in the way of a human with a lot of will. It's that simple. But these people make us minorities feel like the overwhelming force of racism is so powerful that there's nothing we can do about it other than cry racism and change the system. That is so debilitating so disempowering.
Would you want to lose your Olympic gold metals for the 100 meter dash if you won them by running only 80 meters while everyone else had to run the full 100 meters?
I read the whole book and found it so informational. Born and raised in a conservative Christian home, I began my elementary school years with the same church sponsored schooling that Betsy Vos, former Secretary of Education, also was educated in. Thank goodness, I was transferred into public schools the same year that prayers were removed, not that that had any part in my transfer. But throughout my schooling, I never heard the information Nicole Hannah-Jones was able to gather and pull together! Since reading it, it seems that daily, I am learning new things never addressed in our history books! Many thanks to her and all the contributors!
To this day, it still astonishes me how some Black americans are so afraid of the fact that historically (and even to this day) white people had horribly racist policies targeted against black people before and after slavery. This idea that now since slavery is gone everything is somewhat better and racism somehow vanished is the biggest ruse being pushed by every collective group involved. Those groups and individuals involved do it to protect their own fragile egos that their history isn't as rose-y as they wish and so all minorities, especially black people, will suffer for it. They just don't realise they're also hurting white people in the process. Make no mistake, every evil person does things for their own benefit, and so to them there is no wrong doing whatsoever in their own eyes. In other words, evil is in fact pure ignorance and nothing more.
