I had a few requests to modify my single oil shea butter soap recipe to try and add a bit of lather. So I made this new unscented soap using 60% shea butter along with a few other oils & butters.
Thank you for watching! -- Holly :)

The content I create is intended for those who already have an understanding of cold process soap making. Cold process soapmaking involves working with sodium hydroxide (NaOH, also referred to as lye). Lye and raw soap can permanently damage your eyes and burn your skin. When making soap, you should already know and practice lye safe handling procedures and always wear safety gear during the entire soapmaking process, even while cleaning up. I hope you find watching my videos helpful or entertaining. However, due to all the many variables that can affect a particular batch of soap, if you do try any of my methods or techniques that I use in my videos, I cannot be held liable or responsible for your results.

Hi everyone! I think when I make this soap again (high shea butter is my dry skin's favorite), I may try using 90% shea butter and 10% coconut oil (since the coconut oil was the only real lather producer I added). I included the olive oil just to have a liquid oil in the mix, and the cocoa butter was added for hardness (and because I really like it in soap). I was asked by a couple of people if the shea butter scent lingered in the soap. I mentioned this in the video, but, even after 9 weeks, I can still smell the shea butter. If you were going to add a fragrance, it might interfere with the scent somewhat. I did use unrefined shea butter, though. Oh, one more thing, I don't detect any cocoa butter scent after the cure, in case you're wondering about that. Hope you're all doing well! -Holly :)

I have been using shea butter in my soaps since 2001. I currently make a palm free recipe with shea butter and I love it. It has such a wonderful, creamy lather. I am not missing the palm at all.
@builtontherockfarm
@builtontherockfarm 2 года назад
Do you use full shea butter to replace the palm oil? I am new to soap making and would like to avoid lard and palm and was hoping I could use that as a replacement but many places say max 15% shea butter and most of the palm recipes I see are 20-25% palm. I was thinking of doing a 15% shae/5-10% cocoa for replacement in these recipes.

I've read all over the internet not to use more than 15-20% butters in CP soap because of cracking, but you've proved this totally wrong. I've used butters up to 30% with no cracking but have dialed it back to 20-25%. I don't use palm oil, lard, or any animal products so to increase hardness and longevity I use more butters. Kokum butter is very nice and I use it instead of cocoa butter because it won't clog pores. Thank you for a great video. And I agree with another user that your video is extremely relaxing to watch.

Beautiful soap. I have a question. I watch all of your videos and the one question. How do you know at what temperature oils and lye get together. Seems you change it. I have had little success with my soap because I get a different result making any soap I try of my own recipe. Thanks for your time.
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 3 года назад
Thank you & thanks for watching my videos! My soaping temperatures vary with my recipe and sometimes it's just where the temperatures end up after I've let everything sit for awhile. If I'm making a plain soap with lots of hard oils (like this one), I generally soap around 95ºF so I don't get a false trace where the oils start to re-solidify before I've even reached emulsification. If I'm making a complicated swirl and need lots of time to work, I generally use a recipe with more liquid oils and will soap around 80ºF or even room temperature...lower temperatures will (usually) give me more time to work. Hope this helps!

I love your videos. So beautiful and peaceful and such a delight to watch. I haven't yet made soap--just in the information gathering phase. I have a question: How do you know how much your oils are going to weigh? Is it the same as the volume of soap that you're wanting to make? For example, I have a 2lb mold--would I calculate my total oils to be 32 ozs? Thank you so much.
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 3 года назад
Thank you so much! To calculate the oil amount for a specific mold, you first calculate the volume of the mold (length x width x height of soap). Then multiply that number by 0.4 to get the ounces of oil required. I use grams, so I always convert the ounces to grams. I've used these molds for so many years that I usually just guess at the amount or round up sometimes. So my numbers at the end may not be exact to the gram. I'm going to try and start including that calculation at the beginning of the recipe portion of my videos. Hope this helps!! Oh, and Elly's Everyday Soapmaking has a great video on this very thing, if you're interested in more info: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZguW6J3Jj2Q.html

I'm sorry you got a partial gel, but that's so good to know! I've been wondering if I should try the freezer, so I'll give that idea up. 😂

@@hollysoapmaking Yep, I figured that info would come in handy for other soapers who are thinking of putting it in the refrigerator or freezer.

What does soap making do to the quality of butters. Does it make sense to add unrefined butters instead of refined butters, or butters other than your Shea Butter base?, i.e. Cupuacu, kokum or other oils. Does the lye process cancel out all of the qualities of butters and oils?
