This is our first ever sheep shaving so don't judge too hard hahha, we shaved them in end of May but our videos are a bit behind!
Make sure you subscribe to follow our daily lives in this farm!
Hey to everyone!!
We are two young adults, Despina 22 and Deivids 23 renovating an old farm house from 1817 in Latvia. Everything in and out of our house has been done by ourselves with no hired help. Soooo far everything is going great and there haven't been any incidents.
DIY is going to apply to nearly everything in our house. Our budget is tight and that has made us appreciate every "ugly" part of this house and turn it into something new and beautiful.
We give new life to things that others would throw away!
In this journey we are not alone! We are starting up our little Farmily and part of it are
3 Goats & 2 Baby Goats
1 Mom Sheep & 2 Baby Sheep
4 chickens
1 Rooster
and 1 Goose
Oh yeah and my cat Ivi
Despite our daily problems we are two young people full of joy and happiness, ready to start a new crazy chapter in our life. It wouldn't be fair to keep this fun for us!
that's why we want YOU to be also part of our Farmily!!
Hope you enjoy our video!
We love our very supportive community!!
Thank you so much for the support you are giving us. Every view, like, share, subscribe and financial support means a lot to us. Any support is extremely appreciated!

Yeah its what we didn't want to do! Also why we didn't get Sheep shears they are very dangerous for first time users, but this one worked great for babies the wool is very thick but Barbara no problem! 😊❤️

Shearers usually put them on their bum with their back to the front of your legs. It relaxes the sheep and they are easier to control-as a possibility for the next time.

Really impressed at how well you did for a first time, not cuts for a first timer is amazing. Taking your time is worth it as they will not be too afraid for next time. Definitely catching them is the hardest part, particularly as you don’t have a smaller enclosure or holding pen yet. The finger in the mouth trick is an old trick but it has perfect success rate. Once you get them down sheep are usually pretty good and Barbara would have been shorn before, so she knows what to expect. Plus you probably get faster by the third time too. Love how the babies ran to Mum/Barbara afterwards to tell her about their experience. Naughty goats...bullying the sheepies with their horns.

If you handle your sheep more often, petting and leading them, by hand, they will not run away and fight you so much. You don't have very many so it won't be hard. Also, sitting them on their butt seems to neutralize them and they hold still. Watch some shearing videos on youtube - "The Sheep Game" is excellent. Professional and very careful with the sheep.
@sandratharp4818
@sandratharp4818 3 года назад
You must following feeding and watering instructions before placing your sheep on there butts. It causes breathing and stomach issues that are dangerous to your sheep. You need to look up how long to withhold feed and water before attempting that for the safety of your sheep. There is a schedule on a RU-vid channel called Right Choice Shearing. I wouldn't want to see any happen to your babies.

Wow...I did 56 sheep every summer ..shearing is an art form...You guys did a great job for newbys...its so weird seeing sheep with tails...My uncle taught me sleeping and we always put ring on there tails as newborns about a week old...he said it was better for there health...he also showed me the finger in there mouth trick..he used to say they will submit faster and learn to lay down faster...it is easy to grab a handful of fur..but he used to say it brushes them and they do feel pain. I remember my first assist to a mommy having trouble birthing...I had to reach inside her and turn the baby...#1 birth was a 13 hour ordeal for a 1st time sheeper... The funniest thing that happened while shearing was when a mouse jumped out of the fur and I jumped a mile ...You guys are amazing...You have the gift...animals clearly love you both...The goose is the boss of the place...keep it up...OH...1 more thing I was taught....was to keep the tractor under roof...Good Job...love your channel

Sharing with a human buzzer takes too long. You need real sheep shears.
@geniestotz4690
@geniestotz4690 3 года назад
Next time-- set the sheep on its butt. Put its head between your legs and it will lean into you. Start the shave from the neck and go straight to the tail. Then go back and make another strip toward the tail. Repeat until finished. The fleece will come off in one piece. Discard belly hair. You will be able to do it in 5 minutes.

You don't use ordinary hair clippers to shear sheep. You need proper shears which are much larger and faster.

@simoneruf6285

One more thing, the shavers come with different blades. It looks like you are using the blade meant for the face. There is another one meant for shearing the body which is larger and can handle more hair or fur.
@yaofanskra
@yaofanskra 3 года назад
Interesting.... I think I know the reason why the sheep wasn't reacting for a few minutes after the shave. It's just my theory but I remember reading somewhere about gazelles and other preys like small antelopes, they fall into a sort of frozen state as if they have been given anaesthetic when the lion catches them so that they won't feel any pain at least. It is triggered by extreme fear, like a self-defence mecchanism. After a few moments they'd 'come back to life'. xD Maybe I'm wrong... but the stress could have built up. (Love your videos, btw!)
@DoBeDiff
@DoBeDiff 3 года назад
Interesting 🤔 could be the reason, they always stay down for a while, when we first got the sheep we had to lift her up on her feet and then only she would try to walk! 😁❤️

Way to go. Maybe next time, shear them in a smaller enclosure with a tarp or sheet to roll the fleece on to. Watch some old timers shear. Some how they can roll the whole fleece into a bundle. I volunteered at a education farm for sheep shearing days. I couldn't spin very well, but I sure could demonstrate how to card wool to be spun.

My cousin took sheep to the fair for prize ribbons and money. I watched my older cousin shear the sheep. He had a homemade table at his height so it wouldn’t hurt his back. Old metal pipe for legs, plywood table top, metal pipe mounted at one end where large dog collar attached to the pipe for sheep neck. Might have a u shaped pipe to hold the neck underneath attached to the upper pipe and the collar. He would work in shade near barn. Bring your fan outside were you work. Wind keeps bugs away. He did it in stages less stressful for sheep. He was doing five sheep. The sheep wool all needed to be the same length showman cut. Brushing and sheering. Took a long time. I think you did a great job shearing.

Two things: Shearers go lengthwise the boundary, not perpendicular, so the wool curls up and they use a far bigger machine. And here in Holland we shear the lambs of this season a year later, you will get beautiful long wool, not those short useless tufts.

The tails and around the anus are really important areas to be shaved as it stops fly strike. There is a good vlog on youtube called The Sheep Game where they show how to shear sheep properly. The position you had them in is very stressful for the sheep as it is an attack position, though it looks funny and wrong it is much better to sit them on their back ends for the main shear. also lying on their side for too long can put undue pressure on their lungs and it can kill them, that is why sheep are put into a sitting position because it is quicker and easier for the shear. I know that you mean well and care very much for your animals but some of your ways are sometimes a bit dangerous for the animals. You have been pretty lucky for now but please next time get a professional to show you how to do it properly. Also please move the poop piles further away from the animals because you don;t want them to get maggots and diseases.

U need to get collars for each of your animals. Then when u are going to get them for some thing attach a lead to them and it will be much easier for u and them. I know nothing about shaving lams but we have to shave our cat and dogs. I’m telling you shaving a cat is harder then what u straggled with the 1st lamb. And u need to watch some videos on how the Australians ranches do it. I like the way your are gentil with them but you do need to be able to control them and do this faster and safely. We also bribe our cat with treats. One person cuts the other controls the teeth and claws with treats.
