It should be noted that if you use the shearwater desktop application you can change the splash screen on each Perdix AI. My wife and I have our names and phone numbers pop up when each unit powers up it becomes very obvious who's is who's. We also zip our pouches differently. My wife always has the 2 zippers centered on the pouch and I always put both zippers to one side. Thus even when they are in the case its easy to immediately tell them apart.

They also make some cool silicone covers in multiple colors. I dive with a bunch of folks running perdix computers. helps make mine stand out. www.diverightinscuba.com/silicone-protective-cover-for-perdix-computer.html

Great point. My friend and I were diving 2 weekends ago at Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, NM and a women took my friends and swore it was hers and wanted to argue. When she said just turn it on and if its yours we will know. Mine has my photo, name and phone on the screen. The look on that womens face was priceless. My friend played it off as a misunderstanding but I had not doubt she was trying to take it.

Thanks a bunch, Freddy. You've just-about pushed me over-the-top, to buy a near-thousand-dollar "next" computer where a Suunto Vyper Novo "might" have done the job for me ... (Scare-quotes optional.) Shearwater had a booth at the Washington DC Dive Show, this weekend, where I finally got a chance to "go face-to-face" with the Perdix, and that is one impressive computer! And your reminder that this IS, after all, LIFE-SUPPORT equipment, is the ultimate convincer. I lost sight of that, and put too much attention on the price tag. It's nearly two years since you posted this review. How has the Perdix worked out for you?
@LeviathanScuba
@LeviathanScuba 4 года назад
Hi Rick. Thanks so much for the reply! The Perdix has worked perfectly for me. No issues at all! I have since started using the Shearwater Teric. This has nothing to do with the performance of the Perdix, however. As a dive shop owner, I like to demo all of the different models so that I know exactly what I am selling. The Perdix and Teric are both awesome and are very similar. For those that may not like the large size of the Perdix but still want the same bright and colorful screen, the Teric is a great choice. But then there are those that love the large screen of the Perdix. Comes down to personal preference between the two. Hope you love whatever you choose!

Thinking about upgrading to a mares genius computer. I cannot seem to get any reviews on this computer. Have you done one yet? I am comparing it to the Shearwater Perdix Dive Computer. I really like on the Mares computer it will change color as I reduce the amount of gas in my tank. What are your thoughts?

Like others have written, you can upload images and text to your splash screen. Mine has a turtle with my name and phone number. Shearwater recommends that you replace the $3.00 worth of bungee cord every year. So when that fails and you loose the computer, don't blame them. With a bit of practice the straps are easily clipped with one hand, or you can have your dive buddies do it. that's what buddies are for.

Thanks for the review. One suggestion from diver's that I dive with that have them is. use two indipendet bungy or surgical Tubing. Then if one brakes you still have the second one holding it in place. They way you have it shown in the video if one side brakes the hose is not tied on the second side. We are using a branded bungy for durability. Can't wait for mine to arrive.

The computer screen also offers personalization. You can add a name and a phone number right on the opening dive screen.

I've been using an Eon Steel for the past 2 years and although I do like it a lot, Suunto is a pretty conservative animal of course. I know that you can change the level of conservatism on the Perdix but in general, how would you rate it with respect to being conservative or liberal?

Is there any way you could do a review on Cochran dive computers I've heard a lot of good things about them but there's not much on the internet as far as reviews go.
@LeviathanScuba
@LeviathanScuba 6 лет назад
Eric - Cochran has been around for a few decades now. Started out as more of a tech computer. I use to dive the Commander and then went to the Nemesis IIa, this was 20+ years ago. I would have to say the Nemesis was most reliable hoseless computer at that time as it never lost a signal, unlike the Oceanic Datatrans Plus or the US Divers version. Cochran used somewhat common batteries (4 - AA in transmitter and 'N' in the wrist). Both computers had the largest of displays (big numbers). The things I didn't like about it was you had to "tap" on the face of the computer to get it to switch screens, or even to get the back light to come on, which was difficult when wearing heavy gloves or a drysuit. When I brought that to the attention of Cochran, they said you could just flick your wrist and it would change, however I never could get that to work doing that. The other thing I didn't like was is how you had to use a metal object between contacts to make changes during set-up (ie nitrox modes). You could change settings (and download dive data) if you hooked it to your PC, but I remember their download cable was a pain to use because you had to have it just right to make a connection and it always seemed to loose connection during download/upload. I haven't kept up with Cochran for the last 15 years, so I can not comment on what changes (if any) they have made over the years. From a quick look at their website, the display looks just like it did back when I was diving their computers in the mid 90s. ~Randy

Do you have a recent review about the Perdix ai or what experiences have you made meanwhile with it ? I found only old one reviews on RU-vid and i want to buy the perdix in the near future. Thanks
@LeviathanScuba

Hey there, thanks for the questions. The review for the Perdix is on delay. Lost my producer. Will come out soon. Anyway, the shearwater recreational dive computers primarily are the Perdix and the newer Teric. I have used both extensively. Wonderful experience with both. Perdix is larger and the Teric is like a large watch. Both function well and don't lack any feature that a recreational diver would want. Pros for the Perdix are: User changeable batteries for both the transmitter and the computer. AA for the computer and it is very flexible in that you can use a special 3.6 volt battery that can get a reported 250 dives on. I only had about 175 dives on that type of battery and it still showed a full charge. You can use rechargeable AA batteries which is convenient. You will get approx. 60 dives on the rechargeable. Or simple AA batteries found anywhere around the world. The transmitter is common among many brands. Takes a CR2 . I recommend taking a spare with you because they are not as easy to find in exotic locations. The Perdix screen is large which is a plus but the overall size of the computer is not very large. They did a good job of making it mostly screen on the top or front. Bright screens on both. Customizable screens, Personalize either so if someone has the same computer yours can have your name and contact info. They both are very user friendly and you probably will only need to use the manual the first time just to familiarize yourself with the controls. Very bright but fully adjustable. The teric has a few more features than the perdix and can be worn in place of your watch on a trip. I don't recommend using it as a watch all the time when you are home because the rechargeable (not replaceable) battery needs charging weekly. It does charge in about 20 minutes with the fast charge mode on. I personally like the Teric a little bit more because of the smaller size but the very visible bright color screen. Plus the "Watch Functions" include timer, flashlight which is surprisingly handy, Stopwatch, etc. Easily I'm going to give you my personal email so we can continue this conversation with any specific questions you may have. Also would love to offer a savings if you want to buy one from us. Freddy@5280scuba.com

Hah! Fun, but really the secret to the coin is the little ridge around the edge on the side. It bites into the plastic when heated in the hot sun. Good luck.
