Thank you for sharing these two masterpieces. Your experience with the lighting as it changed from day to night is something even most visitors would never experience. You have added to our knowledge of this master. I hope many people will take advantage of this opportunity to see the two together.
What a master. Have always noticed how darkly lit his subjects seem. Good for me, the unschooled, to be tutored on the delicate and exactness of Caravaggio's play of light. Thank you.
What an awesome painter Caravaggio was! It's just incredible the way he illuminated his paintings from the paintings themselves. And the fact that the paintings change with natural or artificial light... just incredible!
Watching two great masterpieces side by side by an artistic genius way ahead of his time is like a treat of a lifetime for any art lover. Caravaggio's use of light and shadows set tge standard fir every other artists of the Baroque period to study and emulate including such greats like Rubens and Rembrandt. Caravaggio's technical mastery remained unparalleled throughout the Baroque period which no other artist could supercede .👏👏👌👌👍👍❤️❤️
Very "illuminating" talk! I was in Belfast to see the one but I wish I could have seen both together. What strikes me is how much glossier, crisper and sharp-edged the 1602 painting is than the earlier one. I love tracing the compositional layout of hands and arms, noticing the spiral-like arrangement of hands in the 1601 work, and the complex multi-armed grasp of Christ in the 1602 piece.
Fantastic, inspirational. The skill, the talent of technique of the great painter, able to put "light" into his painting is holy energy. It ministers to me. It speaks. Their is "action" or "movement" in this painting. It is a 3 dimensional picture. It is not static.
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Caravagio paintings together and how you decided to compliment the National Gallery loan. I have also been lucky to see the Canoletto which is on display in Aberystwyth. Another wonderful painting displayed with many 'Idyll and Industry' paintings from the National Library of Wales archives. An excellent initiative by the National Gallery in collaboration with UK galleries. I hope it is repeated.
Biblically shaped worldview, expressed wonderfully in paint. This is of my culture, faith and worldview. I will never be ashamed of it or apologetic. I am John. Thank you.
