In this video, I head out to do some jetty fishing out in Dana Point, CA, and ended up catching a Sheephead from the jetty? Haha :D Using my simple and basic favorite high-low rig with a 2 oz torpedo and 2 size #6 hooks, I rig it up with pieces of fresh frozen shrimp. The California Sheepshead surprised me, as it was something I've never caught before there so that was really cool beans. Then I caught a smol Black Surfperch, which was also a pretty fun catch. While releasing the California Sheephead, I had a fishing fail so it got really cold really quick and I had to leave early, but it was still a great day of chilling and fishing in Dana Point.
Edit: A subscriber let me know that the California Sheephead was actually a female in the process of transitioning to a male! Very cool fun fact and we got to capture on video c:

01:32 POV Getting Water For Bucket: Having a bucket of water is helpful for a lot of thing, such as holding fish or rinsing your hands of bait. I've fished the jetties for some time now so I can move relatively quickly, but if you were to try, I suggest taking it easy at first to get your bearings.

05:50 Second fish, a Black Surfperch :D, caught kind of hard for such a smol boi, let him live for another day.
06:56 Another quick safety tip, if you're fishing in a spot that is known for huge waves, pay attention to your surroundings and weather and head back before it becomes dangerous :O
07:18 Calling it a day, got cold, outro
#firstfishfreedom is a tradition that I started a while back. The basis for this tradition is to release the first fish you catch, regardless of what it is (prized, PB, good eats, maybe even world record someday haha). I will only keep the first fish if it is gravely wounded or gut shotted (and a species I can legally keep). If I keep the first fish, then I will pass on the tradition to the second fish, and so forth. Any day of fishing is a blessing, catching a fish and beating the skunk is another blessing on top of that, so I want to return that blessing and luck back to the fish, so they may live another day, get bigger, and maybe I catch them again in the future c:

amzn.to/39dNdHF (Okuma Celilo Salmon/ Steelhead 8'6" Medium, a really good solid beginner rod in my opinion, I'd use it for surf fishing and jetty fishing. Good flexibility for casting far and feeling bites and good reach fishing over rocks for me :D)
amzn.to/3ED5ERL (Penn Pursuit III 3000) Choose the correct size for your needs! Clam = Package Type c: This is a good budget reel for beginners, I like the way it handles and it is very comfortable to use. It has great line capacity for 20lb braid so it's a great go-to reel for medium to light setups.
amzn.to/3vCCgGX (Fishing Bait Thread, very helpful for securing non-sturdy baits to your hook, highly recommended if you use bait such as mussels!)
amzn.to/3Kgo38c (I normally use braided, my default line for general purpose is 20 lb Power Pro Spectra Braided Line, Moss Green. Choose the lb you need for what you're targeting, but you can never go wrong with this brand).
amzn.to/3EDRdNh (GoPro Hero9 Black: The GoPro I'm currently using. Great battery life, especially when filming in 1080p. Favorite function is the stabilization option, keeps footage from getting too jumbly :D)

Hi Kevin, the Sheepshead I think you're suggesting is the one that can be found over on the East Coast ( _Archosargus probatocephalus_ ). Over on the West Coast, we have this fish called the California Sheephead ( _Semicossyphus pulcher_ ). While I know nothing about the Sheepshead, the California Sheephead is a very important species because they eat grazers such as the Pacific Purple Sea Urchin ( _Strongylocentrotus purpuratus_ ). If left unchecked, they can decimate whole sections of our kelp forests! Here are Wiki Links for each fish if you're interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archosargus_probatocephalus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_sheephead EDIT: Upon double-checking, I just realized that it is California Sheephead without the S in the middle, my apologies for that, but thank you bringing this topic to my attention, I will promptly fix it where I can c:

Thanks! Honestly that was the first time I caught a Sheephead from the jetty, usually I expect them from charter boats in deeper water but it was cool to know you can catch some good sized ones from the shore c:

Sheepshead are all born female and some change to male in about their fifth year. The one you caught was in the middle of going male. Very cool to see in that form! Thanks for sharing.

:O I was honestly confused which gender the Sheephead was on the spot based on the color patterns but I didn’t that was what was going on, probably not often you get to see a Sheephead transitioning but knowing that just makes this video extra special c: I’ll update the description as well to include this information for others who come across it ^-^ Thanks for watching and thanks for the info Joe Cameron c: 👌🎣

Speaking of unusual catches, I finished filming for my next video, I just have to edit it but during that trip, I caught a sculpin that was bright red, like vermillion red! Almost all sculpins I’ve caught have been a nice normal Orange besides this guy 😂 have you ever caught a super red sculpin before?

@@SvenGoesFishing Yes sir, Brother! Cabezon can often be a bright red or a dark brick red!

I guess cabezon have a lot of variation in their colors as well :D have yet to catch a legal sized one so I’m excited for when that day comes c: also for some reason Joe, your comment was held for review so I didn’t see it, which makes no sense 😂

What bait are you using out there? Want to start fishing off of Dana Point
@SvenGoesFishing
@SvenGoesFishing 3 года назад
Hi Ryle, for this video I use freshly bought frozen head-on shrimp from local super markets. I like head-on shrimp because it preserves most of the natural shrimpy goodness. I also recommend freshly bought frozen baby squid. Those are my two favorite baits to high low rig because a lot of species will go for either, and they are relatively sturdy baits that stay on your hook well. Squid's a tad more sturdy than shrimp but I feel shrimp catches more fish at least for me. Hope that helps, good luck brother 👌🎣

Where do u get the bait
@SvenGoesFishing
@SvenGoesFishing 2 года назад
I like to buy my shrimp bait from local supermarkets close by. You can buy them head-on from markets like 99 Ranch or El Super in their seafood section. You don't need too much, most I need for a full day of fishing is half a pound c: I also prefer head-on because it retains the most shrimpy essence. Prepackaged frozen shrimp will also work, you can get those in the freezer section from like Walmart or Ralphs. The more original the shrimp, the better (not precooked, not deveined, not deshelled, etc). Hope that helps 👌🎣

Where is this fishing spot location at? I’ve been wanting to fish out in Dana Point
@SvenGoesFishing
@SvenGoesFishing Год назад
This is one of the jetties you can found out in Dana Point, the spot doesn't really matter because I've had good luck all along the jetty haha. The side I was fishing is the oceanfront side though, if you fish on that side I highly recommend you bring a buddy. The waves can be highly aggressive sometimes and you never know when a big wave is going to come in and potentially splash you down :o Extra tackle is also recommended, I will say I've lost a good fair share of weights fishing in Dana Point 😂 Thanks for watching Edgar, let minnow if you have any other questions c:

Sorry to hear that Phantom, was it anything specific? Usually I think Dana Point overall is pretty safe, the jetty can get rough sometimes but as long as there’s no jetty closure sign it’s good to go 👌
