Shows how I sheet my 66-012 Super Quickie 500 wing with the 1/8" x 1/4" spruce spars and add a carbon fiber leading edge made from 50K carbon fiber tow.

My dad was pretty unbeatable back in the 70s and 80s, racing quickee 500s in California, with Ron Sheldon. I remember being a flagger at the pylons from time to time.

I get my skins from National Balsa. They are 1/16x10-1/2x48 wing skins and are on their web site. They are contest grade and with the fiberglass I put under the skins, extremely strong, yet still light. I use 10.5" skins so that I have enough to overlap my leading edges for the carbon fiber. Also, my cores are cut to 47.75" x 10" and a 10" skin doesn't completely cover the area. My trailing edges are extra long to be trimmed.

Thank you Don. Great info. I'll take strength over weight any day when it come to high G left turns! ;o)

Many of the Super wings have been used. One was used to set the long course 426 national record before it went to I believe a Ninja. The spars may be overkill and so may the carbon fiber leading edge. But the CF leading edge is extremely ding-proof. I use one pump of WEST epoxy per skin and that is about .9 ounces each. The wings come in at about 11 ounces. Without the wood spars and CF leading edge bit with the fiberglass, they are about 9 ounces. Love to see some of your techniques in video.

Could you please tell me which is the thickness of the balsa sheets?

Looks more like you're building a surf board. The 1/4" spar and the fiber glass are just excess. The Quik V IV by J Allen just used 3 strips of carbon fiber tow top and bottom and 1 1/2 oz. of Epoxy each top and bottom (3 oz.) total. One strip of tow went at the cord 10% (his air foil is more like the 66-010). So it would be the 12% on your fatter wing. The other 2 were spaced about 2" either side of the first. Never had a wing fail.

Why do you need balsa and fiberglass cloth? Wouldn't the cloth suffice?

And just p[lain balsa for the leading edge.
