A most interesting film, scenes in the latter years of some industries around Sheffield and it's operation before being swept away. Nostalgia indeed of how it was then.👍
Videos like this one explain why rationalisation was needed in the 1960s. Duplicate lines, multiple depots and time wasted moving goods around. The railways were built be competing companies and when the competition was no longer relevant, there was a need to update. Unfortunately this has been lost with the over concentration on Beeching.
The change from common carrier allowed railways to pick and choose goods they were prepared to transport. This may have proved economical, but it meant the bulk of goods services had to take to the roads, with the net result we see today. The only freight now is fixed rake merry-go-round services. Pick up goods like those shown here were the lifeblood of the system.
