The fashion consumer is fickle. And I sell a lot to consigners like Buffalo Exchange and a lot of women are doing "exchanges" for clothing. Also some brands are doing buybacks, so women aren't buying like they used to.
When I first heard about shein a couple years ago, a creator posted a video borderline in tears over her designs being stolen by shein and having to lose her small business because of it. She had compared her design book and pieces compared to the postings on shein and they were identical. Shein was using cheaper materials and cheaper labor for cheaper prices, basically knocking her out of the market. A real scummy business
The real criminal here is the virused mentality of the customers that prefer a plastic cheap item instead of a well made and sustainable one. If they would have made cheap items but we have valued quality ones it would not have been that hard for her. In turn our mentality was shaped by the society that doesn't educate us towards quality but expendure. Governments work with corporations which is insane. And that's why more and more radicalist parties arise in the world. We sell our well being for a fabricated comfort and we enslave ourselves.
Unfortunately, there are studies showing that even luxury brands are just as bad as fast fashion when it comes to both using slave labour and causing harmful impact to the environment. Not to mention the number of luxury brands that use real fur and leather. In other words, this isn’t a problem that is SHEIN exclusive, but related to the fashion industry in general. Of course overconsumption is a problem with SHEIN, but we need to all stop blaming only the consumers and harshly judging them, and go for the government and corporations that are allowing this

ethically crafted leather is 100% better than fake leather. If you want to avoid leather, then please avoid the plastic stuff too. At least leather, if treated well, can last forever. Plastic leather disintegrates after a few years only, even if not used or taken good care of.
There are clothing brands that are already born with a real commitment to the environment, their prices are usually higher (but ofc not as much as luxury brands).
I buy at the Second Hand store around the corner. The prices are so low that it doesn't hurt when I buy new items regularly. Plus I can always bring some back and donate them if I don't like them anymore. Or I bring them to Clothes Swapping parties, where I donate them and therefore can get new stuff for free!
@@CordeliaWagner swapping parties can be such a good concept if everyone cooperates! In my family the older girls and aunts always passed down good quality clothing and it lasted for generations, I've had some items from my aunt for 10 years, and they were already used! Investing in good clothes and moving towards slower consumption is hard but possible ❤
@@CordeliaWagner i used to do that until they raised the prices a TON in early 2020. i was working in a grocery store and needed plain shirts so i had to buy from shein. spent 25 dollars and used those shirts until they were unwearable. now i use them as makeup rags and coin purses lol
@@mikafizz1022 I don't, but you can ask local thrift shops if they know anything like that. In my country I've never heard of swapping parties but like I said, family and friends passed down clothes to me and I did to them. Depends on where you live, one of my friends from Scotland was the one who told me what swapping parties were around 2 years ago
I'm proud to say I've never given a penny to Shein, and I don't plan to. Edit: to the people asking "who cares?" You cared enough to comment 😘 To the people asking "want a trophy for that?" I love thrifting and have never experienced the issue that apparently many others have of being unable to find anything cute in my size. Maybe I'm lucky, idk, I've thrifted everywhere from big west coast cities to teeny tiny Midwestern farm towns and never had an issue... but I know that not everyone has the time, energy, patience, or interest to go thrifting. That's okay. Not supporting companies like SheIn is easy for me & my lifestyle. If it's not easy for you, then maybe you can find some other area of life where you can improve your sustainability. Or simply cut back on how much you buy from them. It's a tiny drop in the bucket, but as my mom says, I try be part of the solution, not part of the problem 💗
I’m disgusted by shein and brands like it, killing the planet and abusing workers just for people to satisfy their consumerism. They also blatantly steal designs from tiny brands! I’m not a perfect consumer and I make minimum wage but i don’t go near such clothes, I buy second hand and if I really want something new I save for it and buy from a brand that at the very least pays its employees and makes an effort to design its own stuff.
yes a million times to this. i completely agree. i haven’t got money for every expensive thing i like but that doesn’t mean we should be turning to shein. if they were more ethical in their practices, sure. but they leave a bad taste in my mouth.
Well, there’s brands that are high end and they participate in disgusting activity such as grooming children and they even have a design of a s e x toy that looks like a child I think we need to hold all brands accountable not just shein
I think the issue with this thinking is literally unless you are buying from a brand with in house manufacturing that is ethical(these clothes are uber expensive and the brands have limited styles), you are buying from sweatshops. I own a small boutique, I could lie to you and make you feel good about shopping with me but I am ethical enough to tell you the truth is we all buy from the same factories. I cannot afford to buy $1000 packs of clothing for 6 pieces, I also do not want to sell $100-200 plain sweaters. Even high end brands use unethical factories to produce items, they do not have to they are just greedy.
Honestly thanks for mentioning temu. I shop exclusively second hand and all of a sudden my advertisements on my socials and RU-vid were nothing but temu for the last few weeks. It's been weirding me out and the tag line, "shop like a billionaire" very cheap vibes, not just fashion though it appears they are selling everything.
I've been bombarded with Temu ads too. I thought it was just because I was doing research for this video, and therefore googling them a lot. But interesting to hear that you've been seeing them a lot too!
@@thedevilwearsdata If you are a female at a certain age bracket they will advertise temu. I think you can change your gender or age in Google profile to change your ads.
Speaking of Temu, I'm rather appalled that it has caught on. Especially with Shein's waning popularity, I thought people would realize that selling cheap crap and marketing yourself with the tagline "shop like a billionaire" are colossal red flags. Temu pretty much looks like Amazon but operating under Shein's business model.
It's crazy how their advertising changed too! Like just a few months ago, they were making these cheap looking Chinese ads about earbuds, and now they seem to have similar production quality to Target and Ross.

It's because SO many people have the tendency to absolutely splurge on Shein clothes and then can't be bothered to return it when the product turns out to be unflattering instead of like, tailoring it slightly LOL.
ironically the shein clothes at my local thrift stores are priced higher than they would be new too. thrift stores have no idea how to price things. they think trendy = costs more when it's entirely the opposite. trendy = low quality = costs less. i'll constantly see fast fashion items of super low quality for upwards of 20$. meanwhile i'm over here buying my authentic vintage harley davidson shirts for $3 and vintage levi's for 6$. lol they have no idea what they're doing at thrift stores.
Weirdly enough, in my country there's this "hustle" thing that's just getting a shitton of shein clothes and sell it as a "store". It has mlm-kind of vibes, and idk they don't even get the pretty clothes from that store... Hopefully it'll fade out.
You know the people's economy doesn't have the best interests of the people in mind and heart when the people resort to stuff like this to cover their cost of living
couldn't their decline also be from the recession and general inflation of everything? people don't have $800 to do massive shein hauls anymore like in 2020-2021 and almost all fashion stores suffer during recessions
Yes, definitely a factor! Inflation meant higher production costs and high air freight costs, which impacted Shein's business, according to the Financial Times article I reference in the video (also linked below in this comment if you'd like to read). I debated on whether to get into inflation in this video, but decided to focus on problems specific to Shein instead of problems that were impacting the entire fashion industry/other industries as a whole. @Evelyn Greene yes but im referring more to the trend of unecessary $300-$1000 hauls that were going on, now most people have stopped that recently and just purchasing clothes in smaller doses also it seems that shein has raised prices in most of their merchandise but not necissarily quality
Tbh I didn‘t enjoy this video as it didn‘t highlight the 2 most important factors why people stopped buying so much on shein: inflation and shein‘s price increases which made MANY pieces just as expensive as h&m or even zara for worse quality. People used to buy from shein because it was dirt cheap but ofc with poor quality plus a large size range. Now it‘s like h&m but with the same bad quality as before. It is not because people are all of a sudden environmentally friendly shopping and ditching ALL fast fashion brands, yes it is a factor but it‘s so small in contrast to inflation and price increases without better quality. EVERY single brand produces unethically nearly the same way as shein except if the brand‘s whole concept is about producing environmentally friendly/paying workers enough. H&M, Bershka, Zara, Hollister, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger literally ever single brand is the same but only shein gets shit on like this and people act like the more you pay for clothes the better it is for the environment/workers when you‘re just filling the wallets of billionaires with their high margins just to feel better and shame others for buying cheap.
i think a lot of the pressure to buy from brands like shein stems from a constant need to overconsume. it's not that they "can't help themselves" to buy from a crappy company, it's because our society has pressured people into constantly shopping to avoid FOMO, be trendy, etc. when i started buying high-quality clothing that fit me and flattered my body, as well as had sustainable practices, my wardrobe shrunk considerably-- but i knew i could feel good about my purchases.

So I’m studying fashion and I remember a few years ago we did a unit on sustainability, and I feel like most people don’t even begin to realize how bad fast fashion is. The entire fashion industry alone is the second biggest polluter to the planet (oil is #1), and not even just it’s child labor but how the labor affects the countries, such as Indonesia being a big country for dying leather and textile creation in fast fashion, which has ruined its water supply and has lead to cancer and development issues among the children there. The fast fashion industry is insane
Shein is not the problem, overconsumption is. I recently bought 1 pair of jeans from shein and i dont feel bad because im poor rn and i needed the pants and buying from other fast fashion stores like zara or h&m wouldnt have made a big difference in environment but it is a big difference in price for me. Either way just try to not buy more then you need all the time and then everything will be much more balanced and environment friendly
Exactly. Shaming people who buy a few items they'll wear until it breaks isn't the goal, it's to help people overconsuming so constantly. No one needs a $300 haul every week but people do need to update their closet for professional work occasionally.

The only thing I hope and pray for is that the government starts protecting its people against those monsters who abuse humans. It blows my mind how people criticise Shein and the people who buy from them, then buy the EXACT SAME PRODUCT for more money at a different company. Just because you spend more, doesn't mean it's not made the same way, and coming from the same company. Its been this way for decades. Unless you are buying directly from a designer, majority of what you buy in stores and online is "fast fashion". Even thrifting is generally re-buying a lot of fast fashion. I understand that there are people who don't want to buy "fast fashion" but unless you are spending A LOT of money, and having a direct client designer relationship, its highly unlikely that you're not supporting "fast fashion" anyway. Even a lot of designers use the same "sweat shop" factories that companies like Shein use. I think if people actually did the research on their favourite brands, they'd be shocked.
Okay but let's not pretend that buying secondhand or that buying from specific sustainable brands isn't better than buying from Shein or a luxury brand. Though, in general, we should focus on reducing our consumption.
There are layers to this though, not all fast fashion brands are as horrendous as shein! Yes they are also bad but these shein shoppers can’t even make themselves choose the slightly less bad option and that’s the sad part.
Most people who are highly critical of fast fashion do their research before purchasing. I don't know where you're from, but while the US is highly homogenized when it comes to brands, other places aren't. Where I live, for example, there are a whole lot of smaller shops or even smaller "chains", brands that have grown and have like 10 stores nation wide. That's an entirely different thing than any big fast fashion brand. Even more than that, there's been a rise in sustainably made clothing and a lot of shops are transparent abou where their supplies come from, because their consumers care about it. Personally, I am fortunate enough to be at a place where clothes shopping is entirely superfluous; there are no more garments that I absolutely need to buy to survive, and so I've made it my personal rule that if I can't easily find out who is making the items and where the materials are coming from, I simply don't buy it. I've been able to find and support quite a few great businesses this way. Something common in this business model is that the products aren't readily available - you make the purchase and then it goes into production. This cuts overproduction WAY down and makes it much more feasible for small businesses. There are also brands now that show you their production and the faces of the people who are making the thing you bought. I could go on and on and on!
As someone with sensory issues, Shein clothes make my skin itch. It’s like polyester clothing that itches as bad as a wool sweater 😭🤮 it also gets worn down quickly so I will never order from them again. They are the worst of the worst of clothing given the fact that they are fastest fashion brand that makes the worst quality clothes… which means clothes thrown out very often compared to better quality fast fashion brands or hopefully non fast fashion brands
the only time i ever bought from Shein, i bought a Van Gogh themed shirt. to tell you how cheap it felt would be underselling it... it was gross just on a sensory level, i knew nothing about Shein beforehand but it absolutely guaranteed that i would never be buying from there again
ugh their quality is always so random. I bought a shirt and the fabric was like a slippery fabric like the ones adidas uses for their pants and i sweat so much in it
Some of my best shirts are from Shein, and it's not like my wardrobe is full of 5$ shirts, I'm comparing some to like 40-50$ shirts. So far hoodies are decent but too thin for winter, holding up nice even more than a year later. The crop tops are the best, amazing material and it's the most comfortable thing ever. Shirts are pretty decent but I did come across one mediocre shirt once. It depends on what you got, there's a lot of shady products with like 10 bot reviews. The things I got always had thousands of reviews and I always read dozens of comments/look at pictures before getting something. It's your fault for not looking into the reviews and what material the clothing used.
It's become so difficult to find an ethical and ecological brand that I've literally decided to start making my own clothes so that I can at least control the materials used and the labour conditions (aka me in my kitchen).
That's because an ethical and ecological brand will cost a lot of money and the margin isn't so great for scaling business. Best you could do is buy thrifted clothes and yes, make your own. There are small brands out there that offer what you want but the thing is, most do not want to pay premium for that kind of quality unless the brand is already established.

@@makenzie9088 depends on what kind of clothing you’re making. If you already have a sewing machine, then all you need is some spare fabric, which you can usually get pretty cheap at thrift shops or for a little bit more money at a fabric shop. of course, the thread costs a little bit too, and it does take some time to make a piece of clothing. overall, I would say sewing clothes isn’t that expensive, at least compared to other hobbies like crochet. Crochet is definitely more expensive than fast fashion, because you usually multiple skeins of yarn to finish one project. Yard is about $10 where I live, so if you want to make a shirt using three colors of yarn, that’s about $30-$40. however, making her own clothing is way more rewarding than buying it from a fashion shop, because it means you actually like the clothing that you’re making.
as someone who’s young and isn’t very into all the environmental/political stuff to do with brands, my reason for pulling away from shein is their interface recommending products that have nothing to do with me and the fact that their products are kinda awfully bad quality, like, wearing it just makes me feel greasy. Idk how to explain it.
That's a really interesting point! I wonder how they've programmed their recommendation algorithm (i.e. if they know your age, demographics, or if it's just based on search history). Might be something I look into in the future.
You care about how ‘cringe’ some garment or accessory makes you feel but not about the hellish work/life conditions of the workers who manufactured it. Interesting.
@@x77punk77x no, i’m putting this in perspective of a regular person, someone who if you really think about it, can’t do anything about the hellish conditions workers are put into. Do you think we specifically picked for it to be this way? Id love to have the workers paid fgs. I’ll assure you i and others are well aware of the issues but speaking on behalf of us young adults (sheins focus demographic), we really just can’t do anything about it. That’s the reality of it. The problems are overwhelming, but we can’t afford the better solutions/alternatives for clothing to help fix the problems especially in these horrible economies. Great that you had great quality affordable clothes back in your stone age made by workers who were paid a good amount of money but we don’t get that privilege, and jobs nowadays aren’t paying a lot, so yes i’m gonna buy cheap clothing cause I can’t afford to do much else, and i’m speaking for the majority here. Don’t assume things straight on.
That "greasy" feeling you're describing is probably the feeling of polyester on your skin. It's basically plastic. I can't wear polyester because it also makes me sweat like crazy.
Anyone know any ethical clothing sites? I'm a broke college student, I was gonna buy from shein so I can slowly build my dream wardrobe :( (don't recommend thrifting, there's only one thrift store in my town)
Best way to buy ethical is to avoid synthetic fibres & poor quality as much as possible. Best way to invest in clothes ethically is to buy timelessly tailored garments made of natural fibres - they get better with age, keep you warmer / cooler & don't hurt anyone during production or decomposition + because they last they have re-sale value & wear or tear is repairable.
I sometimes shop from Shein because I'm on an extremely tight budget. Food prices have gone through the roof and I don't have money to spend $20 on a shirt that has the same quality as a $5 shirt from SHEIN. And going thrifting means I spend over an hour in a store just to find 1 thing that actually fit me (I'm petite and curvy). However I limit my purchases from there and only buy what I know I will use. Things like basic shirts that go with everything. Whenever possible, I also repair my clothes. If you learn how to care for your clothes, even cheap pieces can last you a really long time.
if a person doesn't want to buy from a brand that is their choice. And i think the environmental impact of plastic and worker treatment are perfectly understandable reasons. I can respect someone who will put their money where their moral conscious is. That being said, seems to me "they use lots of polyester and thus plastic" seems to apply to pretty much any clothing store. Like i'm sure, pick a clothier, banana republic, uniqlo, J. Crew, Brooks Brothers, Nike, all use polyester. And i do wonder how far that conviction goes. Again i'm not saying don't have the conviction. I'm saying being mad at Shein cause they have polyester and then going to The Gap and buying a cotton hoody even though they've got 10 other hoody's with polyester seems, well, weird. As maybe the issue is buying polyester clothes at all rather than any one store. Maybe the issue is all the stores. That said, as a person that likes wrinkle free men's dress shirts i have to say, I'm all for a good wrinkle free poly blend. not Sorry. Cause wrinkled dress shirts look bad.
The way I see it, the product has unfortunately already been made and if it isnt bought, it is trashed in landfills not recycled because recycling cost resources such as money. So I end up just buying from local businesses who buy left over inventory from these major big brands. Similar to Ross Burlington TJMax Marshalls except its from a local business. I rather give my money to someone whom isn't necessarily a billion dollar corporation like the previous stores mentioned. Ofc there is 2nd hand shopping but as I said the products are already made and us not buying from an official store doesn't mean theyll stop producing them.
@@FancyForestPerson fabric quality matters. You can have poor quality fabric made from cotton and it won’t last. I have vintage cotton clothes that I hand wash and hang to dry. The quality of the fabric doesn’t compare to that I currently find at the store. Furthermore, the quality of cotton fabric has really gone down hill at the fabric shop. I have quilting acquaintances that complained that the cotton fabric is shit compared to what used to be offered 15 years ago.
@@hotjanuary yup. Less about fiber content more about quality of fiber and quality of weave. Polyester isn’t anymore evil than low quality and unethically picked and processed cotton. The supply chain (of quality and ethics) goes aaaall the way down to all of the components of the garment and where they came from. Low quality clothes are low quality clothes.
the problem is the output of shein in particular. with how many items they are producing, it outproduces all of the name brand fashion producers.. just look at how many listings they produce compared to competitors. not that the others dont contribute to the issue, but shein is notoriously bad about this.. but fast fashion is indeed everywhere its not just a shein problem
I strive to only buy natural fibers in my day-to-day clothing. Theres a big difference between a poly tshirt and a cotton on. I get soaked in sweat wearing poly, or other plastics, but cotton lets my body breathe like in should, its far more comfortable. I recently bought one shirt that was 50% poly, and I can't wear it without a wool underlayer to help with the sweating. Its a winter only to now lol
even putting aside morals, why would you waste money on something so trash? i happen to have a lingerie set from shein (didn't buy it thankfully), and it's the weirdest, worst thing i've ever laid my hands on. h&m is like loro piana compared to shein. the prices are ridiculous even for a fast fashion behemoth, there's almost 0 chance something so cheap can last even a month
That's the thing, the clothes can last surprisingly long depending on how you buy. I only ever buy bitten blends and my clothes lasts a long time. Albeit, I've shopped ta SheIn 3 times within the last 2 years for myself & my younger sibling.
Funny you say that cause there's many chances that it can last a month. I've had all my clothes from shein for over a year and they last as long as anything else I have.

@Celeste Garcia very unfortunate that that's been the case for you but my mom also buys things from there as funnily being one of the easiest places to get well fitting plus size clothes and she's also not had any problems over the years
Wait…Zara is fast fashion?! I thought it was high end with the prices it has. For context I was always over the moon when other people gave me their secondhand ZARA clothes because I can never afford them at retail price. The third party sellers on Shein are already a thing in Shein Mexico, a couple of brands show up in the tag of "Local brands" or "Local shipping". I think it's interesting and a good bussiness move tbh. Unfortunately, the makeup brands that sell thru Shein are brands that copy others to sell a cheaper version (just like Shein tho so I guess it's matches their values lol) BUT one brand specifically has sold moldy eyeshadow palettes.
@@phatweeb69to be fair in México there’s a lot of makeup brands that are cheaper than shein’s and have a better quality than those overpriced branded, bissú, italia deluxe, pink up, beauty creations are some of those, and i don’t think they were laughing at those people (at least from what i understood in their comment)
I will never download Temu and will never give a dime to Shein. I buy 80% of what I own from Goodwill and yard sales, while the Just Between Friends sale is my go-to for children's clothes.

I have never purchased anything from shein…. But I am ashamed to admit my entire closet is fashion nova. I haven’t purchased from them in about a year. 1. The thot like clothes do not appeal to me anymore 2. They gouged priced while still overlong discounts but they increased the price by 30 % and then they give you a 30% coupon…. So you can buy it full price. I refuse to fall into the shein trap
I just ordered some items from them. I probably order about $150-300 a year on clothes. I can say that I got some decent quality items from them for a great price (decent because its not paper thin like shein but not durable enough to last a lifetime) I think I will keep the clothes I ordered for a long time before feeling like I need to order more clothes again. They are having a sale right now & actual cute items I got 21 items averaging about $9 per item which is wayyyyy cheaper than the bs on shein & with slightly better quality. although I don’t fully agree with how fast fashion businesses operate thats about the most affordable option out their for clothing
@@anthropomorphicpeanut6160 yes I actually needed the clothes I purchased, I mentioned previously that I only spend about $150-$300 on clothes PER YEAR. Im not a over consumer I purchase items I need when I need them.
Unfortunately, it is growth that is decreasing, not the company sales. When u r as big as shein u cannot grow so big continuously. For instance, if u sell 30 shoes u can double to 60 shoes. But if u already sell 30 million it is hard to double to 60 million.

@@thedevilwearsdata true, I mean I really hope it's a trend that marks the end and not just a little downtick for a company so big though. Ideally they don't get overrun by just another ultrafast fashion too.
One thing you did not mention in the video, but I find personally important, is the range of sizes Shein offers at an affordable price. As a plus sized woman myself, finding clothes in my size that aren't insanely expensive, terribly tacky, or granny clothes is difficult. Yes, there are more sustainable alternatives, but thrifting becomes less and less of an option as resalers buy up stock and jack up prices. Then there are straight-sized people buying "oversized" clothes several times their size for the aesthetic. I am one to very rarely get rid of clothes at all because my finds can be so far and few between. I understand that shein is bad, but I also understand that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
People should be allowed to wear whatever sized clothes they want. I hate it when people complain about straight-sized people buying oversized clothing at thrift stores. What if they have dysphoria? Or what if they only feel comfortable in baggy clothing? Literally let people do what they want with their bodies it’s not the fault of those people that brands don’t make enough plus sized clothing

As a plus size woman, Who has a low budget I have no choice but to shop at SHEIN. I used to shop at Fashion Nova but I can no longer afford to shop there . I usually only purchase once or twice a year from them by necessity. I have no choice. The thrift stores don’t usually sell my size and if they do on occasion it’s usually something granny or something a mature woman would wear.I wear their clothes till it falls apart and purchase new ones accordingly. But I’m not a fan of the constant hauls most of the time they wear it once or twice then get rid of it. Which doesn’t help the problem.
Clothes are said to contain toxic heavy metals like lead in their paint which also affects your body. Buy some chlorella and eat it or put it on your body to remove toxines.
I’m a graduate of central saint martins who studied material futures and had the opportunity to work with Stella McCartney to create sustainable materials for the fashion industry. The truth is that most fast fashion companies are just as responsible if not more responsible than Shein for environmentally and morally questionable practices. H&M, Zara, old Navy, the gap, Victoria’s Secret and Uniqlo (and so many more fast fashion brands) all paved the way for the acceptance of throwaway clothes and endless consumption. The biggest truth is that Shein is not any different, you need to be more open about discussing the politics surrounding the demonisation of Shein because it’s a Chinese brand, rather than a western brand that is taking a big chunk of the customer base away from legacy fast fashion brands which most likely also pour reasonable amounts of money into marketing campaigns against Shein and hiring influencers to make it seem as though Shein is the only bad company out there. Shein isn’t doing anything these other companies have been doing for decades, the only problem here you see is that this is a Chinese company that’s taking away business from western companies. That’s all there is to it. So for those of you out there intellectual enough that reject ever buying from this company put your research skills to good use and figure out if you aren’t already buying fast fashion from other companies with similar if not worse practices. You most probably are. Most people aren’t rich enough to have things custom made with natural fibres and natural dyes or buy from sustainable fashion brands like Stella McCartney and Patagonia. The only alternative would be to buy everything second hand, however these clothes that end up in these shops are mostly the very throwaway clothes being discussed here. Equally harmful, releasing toxic chemicals in the making of the material, exposing workers to toxicity and releasing microfibres into waterways. So you guys in the comments saying you will never buy Shein, how about you never buy any clothes? That would be magnificent though. Reducing is the only way to actually make an impact. Double standards make you guys hypocrites.
In 2012 I bought from a Chinese e-commerce company once. Got shoddy items and my credit card number stolen. Never bought from one of these places again😢 Buying cheap but high quality thrift items is a lot of fun though. Or from estate sales.

Since Shein meets all of these, a lot of people wouldn’t consider it a startup, especially because it’s been around for so long, has billions in revenue, and employs a reported 10,000+ people. To be honest I can't blame people buying from Shein for their cheap price and not everyone can afford ethical clothings. Speaking demographically, many buyers usually come from developing countries and they make businesses buying bulk for the community.

People criticise me very harshly because i buy from Shein. While i of course don’t approve their work ethics, for someone who can BARELY afford Shein, there is no other alternatives for me. Thrifting doesn’t work because most of the time I can’t find anything that fits me due to my size. Ethical brands are so expensive and I don’t have a budget to pay 20 bucks for a shirt. That’s like one week of groceries for me. It’s so easy to judge people and preach about Shein. Good for you if you’re able to support ethical brands, i on the other hand don’t have a choice like you.

I don't like Ultra Fast Fashion. The mindset behind it. The environmental damage. I have never bought clothes from SHEIN and never will. I like Second Hand shopping. I can get high quality items for a low price. And the chemicals are washed out, chemicals that can cause cancer and other health problems.
I’m not defending shein but I will say most everything I’ve gotten from there has lasted me now like 4+ years so I think it’s just looking about the quality pieces from them. DAZY is especially a good brand to me though it’s smaller sizes but their oversized sweaters have lasted me for so long

i wouldn’t lump zara and shein in the same category. yes, they both sell on-trend, mass produced fashion and accessories, but the quality and pricing of zara is much higher than shein. and their ethics far surpass shein’s.

Kinda irked ppl in the comments are assuming that everyone who shops at shein has an overconsumption people. I escaped an abuse ex with not a lot of clothing, utensils, makeup(don’t judge I need make up for my job and utensils. Shein I’m made a purchase that could’ve been thousands a few hundred. I would’ve loved to stay on my moral high ground but I was desperate. And tbh when you see shein in reviews I only see ppl around my age or younger(22). I don’t like to continuously ask my parents for money to buy clothes, so I purchase what I can afford. It’s as simple as that, really. Where else can I shop? My parents don’t have that much money. I live in the UK and my parents are both key workers (teacher and social worker) and people in their field of work are on strike. My dad couldn’t strike bc we’re desperate for money. The first time they actually were like “okay we can afford that” is when I bought clothes from SHIEN. Our local thrift shop is expensive and so is the online one. I want clothes that fit my style bc I still have clothes from when I was 8/9 years old. I honestly don’t know what to do. I even try to save up for money to be able to buy clothes from ethical clothing shops but I can only get 1-2 items.
There is no reason to feel bad for buying Shein if it's what you can afford. People that stick their noses up at Shein and other affordable clothing are coming from a place of privilege where they have access to other clothes that claim to be more sustainable but are probably not in practice

Why would I wait 2 months for a shein order of crappy plastic clothes when I can find high quality items for essentially the same price in my own country? People just want an excuse to overconsume. There's already so many garments going around, most of them end up in landfill. As a low income person, the biggest struggles are rent, bills and food prices. No poor person actually worries about overconsuming on cheap clothes.
I have only bought one swimsuit years ago from Shein when it was just beginning to become popular. Somehow it's lasted me years and I still wear it but I still think about who made it and how it came to be in my possession and I'm reminded why I've never bought anything else from them.

I live by: if the clothing product is so cheap even when it's new (not secondhand or thrifted), chances are its quality is so bad or you have to be unreasonably careful so that the item will last for a while. So I'm trying to save for brands that are not crazy expensive but I know, by experience, to last a while.
With sales going down that also means that people are starting to do better and I’m so proud. I know a lot of people were really upset for getting called out for shopping there which is semi understandable clothes are definitely expensive out here. Shein is super successful because of the points system rewarding reviews, specifically giving more for each picture. People are more likely to buy online when they can see what it really looks like with a good variety of body types.
There is no private property in China, all companies are property of the government (even if it doesn't look like it on paper). So it will be funny to see Shein on IPO and it will be more funny if people will start to buy their stocks, which are controlled by the Chinese state

Playing devil's advocate here, but I can't help but think if their products are so low quality you almost have to keep buying new items. And for people who can't afford a $40 quality top, instead buy an $8 top once every few months. That's of course for people who are buying out of necessity, not compulsion.
I m living in a country where medium net salary is 850 euro so we can not afford anything else besides fast fashion but because we are kinda poor we are also kinda frugal and we keep our fast fashion items for years. I hope that people living in richer countries who can afford more sustainable brands will stop buying (so much) fast fashion. My country even has a lot of second hand stores and outlets so we are polluting less. Also we never buy huge shein hauls anyway bc we don t afford.
I feel regretful to say that i was a huge Shien fan, because they had such cute clothes in plus sizes that so many companies just didnt have. But after learning more about the company I stopped, but its so upsetting to lose an affordable source.

Minimum wage where i live is 300$, and prices are the same as in america (15-20$ for a shirt in Zara, 1200$ for an iphone, literally same for clothes/electronics) so Shein is a godsend. There's no ethical consumption under capitalism. Do you know how many chocolate brands have children workers? Anything animal related is tied to animal torture 99% of the time. If you take a look at everyday things you use/eat/buy the majority are as bad if not worse than Shein when it comes to enviroment/morals/working conditions for their staff etc.

The only thing i got from shein was a dress that looked nice i seemed to be a nice fit... Plus i had no time to go shopping since i was neck deep into university work. Well it was really bad the straps weren't adjustable, wasn't form fitting and the 'skirt' was barely there and thought i would flash by just turning my body. The material was horrible and i said never again. My sister loves shein despite me telling her that it's bad quality, bad for you and not worth while but she stands by it. Tell my mam the same thing but she prefers to listen to my sister because "it's cheap"

I turn to Shein if I need a specific piece of clothing (usually basics that I struggle to find reasonably priced in-store. Think white shirts, plain black turtlenecks, ect. that mix and match everywhere instead of being the main part of an outfit each time). I only ever get stuff I know I'm gonna be wearing/using for multiple years. So while I am still using Shein, I wouldn't say I'm in the group that's overdoing it. I can't afford to spend much, even for basics like this - and while I'd love to save up for good quality clothing, we're looking at several months worth of saving because I really don't have much wiggle room in my monthly spending (I gotta live within my means). I won't need the particular item anymore by the time I can afford it xD
I only get swim wear from Shein and even then I don’t have them as my first option. I’ve gotten clothes from there already and the clothes are basically useless after one to three washes. And damn near everything is see through. I’ve returned to buying more durable clothes from Ralph Lauren, Zara and Express. I purchase clothes more intentionally now for work and social. Shein doesn’t offer quality for that type of consumer.
same - i'm a student w no job. if i could i would buy from more ethical sites, but i literally can't. i tried depop but people make clothing so expensive on there now (even shein stuff) i've been buying from them less now though, i haven't bought from them since november and i plan to buy from them for the very last time in june (since i'll be moving to sixth form and want to make sure my style is up to date).
Almost everything is fast fashion nowadays. Shein, inditex, adidas, nike, lulu lemmon, forever 21, urban outfitters, h&m...there are very few shops that are sustainable, and, unfortunately, even if you find a small brand like that, and even if you have the budget to buy a 50€ t-shirt and 300€ dress (which most people don't) it is very possible that the brand still is fast fashion somehow, it can be the tags, the packaging, how the fabrics are made....it's just silly how everyone has taken it against shein specifically when literally every other brand is quite the same or fast fashion at some level. I personally have lately started making my own clothes bc I enjoy it, it's cheaper, and more sustainable (aaaand the clothes will fit me perfectly) . However, I'll continue buying my underwear and gym clothes and jeans and winter jackets from whatever shop is convenient for me when I need it. I'have had the same bershka winter coat for 5 years, and I only have one. I bought it on sale for 20€, and tbh I take really good care of it and honour it by using it and repairing it if it rips. I think it's more about consuming less and taking better care of the clothes we already have guys. Cause with my salary I'll never afford a 500€ jacket for sure.
A few years ago I was really tempted by Shein's low prices and nice styles, but because I'm a very anxious, miserly shopper who often cringes at the idea of making purchases that I haven't dwelled on for at least 6 months, I never ended up buying any. Now that I'm more educated about the fashion industry and more active in second-hand clothing, I'm glad my constant inability to commit to purchases has paid off 😂

Very similar! Except Shein has more clothes/fashion, whereas I think Wish has more variety. I am surprised that Shein isn't popular in Norway! I googled and turns out there is a middleman company called Colisexpat that you have to go through in order to receive Shein items in Norway.
As person who lived in China for 8plus years and got involved in clothing manufacturing in South Africa, Shein is the biggest scam. To sell your clothing for so cheap, you must have your costs at an extreme low level meaning underpaying the labour, using the cheapest, toxic fabrics etc. on the other hand consumers are also the ones to blame as we overconsume heavily supporting fast fashion. But shein took fast fashion to the whole new level. I’m proud to say I never bought anything from shein and I realy hope they will get more backlash to improve their ethics.

I just want to say brand loyalty is down due to brands treating new customers better than existing ones... no incentive to be loyal is you're not going to be treated well. I know bills are different to fashion but our phone company used to give great offers to loyal customers and now you only get an offer if you're new. If you stay your bill goes up each year. That discourages loyalty
I bought 1 thing from Shein in 2018 (I think, maybe 2017?) and it was so awful that I never bought anything else. I don’t even waste my money on it when it’s sold used… it’s trash and I don’t think it’s cool to hurt other people by buying it, AND it hurts the environment Nope.
Here's my thing about fast fashion. It's affordable because it's cheaply made. (And the fucked labor laws) They don't use good materials they don't last long. So yeah that $5 shirt's cute and so is that $5 shirt in that $15 shirt and that $6 shirt and that $12 shirt. But you've already managed to spend more money on those shirts instead of just one shirt that'll last way longer. Building your closet up requires you to buy your basics first and then build from there. I've personally had to start over multiple times with my closet from losing almost everything after I had to move. Good quality shirts are always better than cheap ones that fall apart in under a year. I've kept clothes for almost 10 years. And I love them, they're not in "fashion" but it's MY style. In general I have a rule that I don't spend over $20 for an article clothing unless I can see myself wearing it for YEARS. Not wanting to wear it for years, But I can realistically see several occasions where I could wear that article of clothing. This also helps me keep my closet small so I'm not pointlessly buying clothes that I won't wear, so im not wasting money. I view my clothes as an investment into myself. I want that investment to last as long as possible. That way I make my money stretch longer. It's also just so much more sustainable. Fashion comes and goes so that shirt that you got 2 years ago might not be in style now, but wait. Other wise it winds up in a landfill. To be honest I feel like people are wasting their money buying from Shien. Yeah, you got a cute skirt. But will it last through next year? It always felt like it's marketed towards poor people but it's actually for rich people. Because if you're poor you're going to want to buy clothes that last a while, so you don't have to worry about needlessly buying cloths. If you're rich you have money to blow it doesn't matter. I also don't know why people get so up in arms about poor people having the to cloths??? Some of them act like that's the only clothes that they have, can get, or wear. what’s interesting is that in my logistics class we learned that sustainability is important to suppliers and brands but they know that most consumers SAY those things are important to them without fully researching the company. They can advertise how sustainable they are and still have slave labor or still use toxic chemicals in their clothing.

I think as more and more documentaries came out, calling shein out on several topics as enviromental pollution, labour laws and stealing designs from small creators, as well as the overall bad quality, it became 'uncool' to do a shein haul (got to literally any haul on tiktok, they almost all have negative comments bc of the overconsumption) and that was one of the biggest selling points - it was free advertisment for shein and when the hauls became outdated, they lost all that free advertisment. Not to mention, less and less influencers want to be affiliated with the brand nowadays and as an influencer-driven brand, that is almost suicide. Also, brands like shein are not only fast fashion - they are super fast fashion, which turn up all of the issues to the maximum.
Great analysis! I totally agree that their clothing aren't the best. But their other products, I must say it lasts quite long. I bought their baguette bag in 2020 or 2021 and I still use it until now because it is still in great condition. So are their socks and t-shirts (mine lasts for more than 2 years). I think what might contribute to this whole mess is the 'following the trend' and 'haul culture' on social media. People will think they're left behind if they don't do that & Shein is somehow accommodating these 2 things to keep their consumers engaged and keep buying.

I shop mostly second hand now, due to low income and also because of some weird sense of joy from picking up stuff that somebody rejected (and also it's a small win for me when I find my favorite designer's item for less than 10 bucks). The only problem is having to take the time to go around the whole city to visit all of those second-hand stores (idk about US but where I live in EU most of them don't have a website you can shop from). I only bought once from shein back at the times when it was called SheInside, and the quality even then was so appaling I just never repurchased anything again. Their stuff is an insult to me as a person who earns money working hard and it's below me to waste them on something like shein. Tell yourself 'I deserve better'.
Same here. Low income earner/master's student so I shop at thrift stores. It's such a thrill when I find quality, sometimes brand name used clothes! It just irks me to know that so many are willing to spend their hard earned bucks on new clothing that will fall apart and that has so many ethical implications (many also impulse buy on needless items). I don't understand the chart about brands and their climate targets. Why is Patagonia in the same bubble as H&M?! H&M is (as said before: fast fashion) Patagonia is since it was founded dedicated to be as climate friendly as possible. They offer repairs for cloths that are purchased decades ago, so that you don't have to buy new. On top of the high quality products that are produced as climate friendly as possible, they are even not a for profit company anymore. Everything they would earn as profit, they donate to fight climate change. So if Patagonia is ranked as high as H&M, the chart is clearly no good representation.
This is a great question and it threw me off too. I'm going to see if I can contact the makers of the chart, and figure out the methodology behind having that there. If they give me a good response, I'll make a short or longer video about it here!
It's really frustrating that no matter where I shop there is the root of slave labor, between Amazon, Walmart, TJ Maxx, AliExpress... it doesn't even matter anymore and it really upsets me because everyone is just buying from Chinese dropshippers
I hate to admit it but I'm a very active shein shopper. I don't have the money to buy higher quality clothing at the moment however, I do keep my clothes for 5+ years after buying them. For example, I stilm have all the shein items I bought 3 years ago and clothes I used to wear in 2011. I hope that makes it less horrible to buy from shops like shein or romwe. 😭
