After 166 race starts Shelby was retired from standardbred racing. He was picked up by a equine therapy centre but proved extremely difficult to work with due to severe separation anxiety. He was difficult to catch, anxious and difficult to handle and had a serious case of greasy heel and would not let anyone touch his legs.
Kath Knoll from Western Australia met Shelby at the centre and was able to do some groundwork with him. She did not think he would be suitable as his anxiety saw him make little progress.
He was re-homed however, he proved too difficult for his new owner and they contacted Kath as they had heard she was the only person who was able to work with him.
Kath agreed to take him, to give him a chance.
At Kath's Shelby went from strength to strength. This video documents his transformation as Kath rebooted his foundation from the round pen, to groundwork and then into the saddle.
