Shelly Beach near Manly in Sydney, Australia is a popular snorkelling and diving spot. It lies within the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve and is host to an amazing diversity of marine life.
This video was filmed over 3 visits to Shelly Beach in early-April 2012
Shot on a GoPro HD1 camera with an Eye of Mine flat lens housing.
Best viewed in full screen HD at 720p.
For information, tips and tricks for using gopros in shallow water see my kneedeepvideo blog below:

I snorkel mostly at Maroubra, Little Bay, Long Bay, Clovelly, and Cruwee Cove, but pretty similar fish most weekends. Only extra that you are guaranteed to see (virtually) is a giant school of garfish at Cruwee Cove. I used to dive, but hardly do now. I like the ability with snorkelling to just float and stare for an hour if I want and not worry about running out of air. Man, I love this video.

Maybe I should do a side by side comparison of my old hero 1 and my hero 10! In good light the old camera still holds up. Thanks for watching.

Great to see on the video. I like the identification of fish. Amazing world under the water. I will be thinking of all the fishes when I walk along Shelly every time from now on. Thank you,

I'd walked along the walkway there looking at the Water Dragons and the silver sculptures of some of the animals in the reserve. Remember seeing the Blue Groper half out of the sandstone and thinking I'd love to see one in the water. Next time I went snorkelling and there they were; great to be able to see so many. Thanks for your comments.

Great work Greg! and what a day in shelly. For those who asked how to keep the gopro underwater, a good tip: buy a dive weight and connect your gopro with cable ties (with or without a tripod). It works well.

thanks Marty. It's mounted on a mesh plate with a couple of snapper leads (fishing sinkers) on it. I too was surprised how little it moved considering I was getting thrown around all over the place. Will post a longer one of just the surge zone at some time.

No lens filters. It's just the gopro hero HD1 in an "eye of mine" underwater housing. I used this housing because it has a flat lens; the standard housing on the HD1'a and HD2's is useless underwater because it makes everything slightly soft and out of focus. This was all shot in water less than 6m (19ft) deep. You would probably start to need a filter if you went deeper. Gopro is stabilised by mounting it on a steel plate.

thanks Dave. That gopro has driven me to creating under water. Always thought underwater film/video was out of reach if on a budget, but the gopro changed all that!

Great video! I live close by and go snorkeling there all the time. Your movie gives a great overview of what can be seen in the Cabbage Tree Bay. It is actually funny, I am pretty sure I saw you the other day by the Bower (I saw a snorkeler trying to set something underwater so now I know what it was). You should feature more Dusky Whaler sharks as they are all over the place now! You gave me creative ideas, thanks so much!

@snells-window 12 лет назад
thanks. Lucky you with that almost in your backyard! I was there the week after Easter but not at the Bower, just Shelly.Was there for about an hour each time over 3 different days. One day I briefly glimpsed a Dusky Whaler... would have loved to get a good look and some footage but that will have to wait until next summer as I live in Melbourne

@@michaelreichard916 The dusky whalers are great. No need to fear, they are very shy and it's a real buzz to see them. I have a video on the Dusky Whalers at Shelley Beach as well.

thanks for your comments. Did you swim all the way along the foreshore from the beach to Shelly? Unfortunately no Weedy Sea dragons spotted, I've only been there a few times so far so it's not surprising I haven't seen them, or perhaps they are in deeper water. Would love to see one along with the schools of sharks.

Gopro is just mounted to a metal plate. Fish can be really inquisitive. I'm not doing anything to attract them such as feeding etc.

Love this, just wondering what settings did you put on your go pro to get such amazing footage?
@snells-window
@snells-window 3 года назад
Glad you like it. This is a very old gopro from 2011, one of the first ones. I still have it and use it when there is good light. I'd just be guessing the setting but basically I always use 1080p and either 25 or 30 fps. Is a great little camera still, even though I now have a 3 and a 7. The secret is using it in good light; always just natural light in my videos, and a good tip is to always point the camera slightly towards the surface; never film with it pointing towards the bottom. Keeping the camera stable also greatly increases the video quality. Thanks for stopping by and watching.

Hi Greg, amazing video, it really is beautifully shot and edited! Can I ask how you get the camera so still in those underwater shots with the waves? Are you using some kind of tripod or something? Thank you, keep up the good work!
@snells-window
@snells-window 10 лет назад
Hi Michael. The gopro is mounted on a steel mesh plate with a couple of weights (sinkers) which helps to hold it in place. This was shot with the older gopro hero 1

blue damselfish at 1.29? tropical water fish get washed way down the coast by the eac during summer (as far south as victoria) and survive until winter arrives
@snells-window
@snells-window 8 лет назад
Yes, but these damsel fish are often seen here. This year there was also some type of triggerfish from the tropics that had taken up residence as well. It's not just currents washing them down, it's the gradual warming of water along the southern coast due to global warming.that is enabling tropical species to slowly move southwards; this has now been well documented through sites like redmap.

Hi just wondering are you allowed to go spearfishing there?
@snells-window
@snells-window 9 лет назад
Hi Hayden, Shelley Beach is part of the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve so you can't spearfish or fish and collect anything there. It has been fully protected for some time now and since then there has been a remarkable increase in the number and diversity of fishes and other marine life in the area and it has become an important attraction for snorkellers, divers and tourists.There are a large number of unprotected areas up and down the coast around Sydney where you can still spearfish.
@snells-window
@snells-window 8 лет назад
Provided you are a competent swimmer it is very safe. No need to worry about sharks or stingrays. You will probably see stingrays at Shelley Beach - beautiful creatures. Importantly get some practice in shallower water and don't start out by trying to hold your breath for too long - shallow water blackout is a real possiblity if you try to push the limits. Snorkelling is a very enjoyable pastime and opens up a whole new world to those who have never stuck their heads under water. Good luck!
@manderenc
@manderenc 8 лет назад
+Hayden Ewart NO!!!! Its marine reserve - the reason there are so many amazing fish is because spear fishing is strictly prohibited!
