One fan's take on answering some of your questions: They definitely play up actual aspects of their personalities and relationships for interviews, performances (there's video of them rehearsing a staged "argument" skit where Akane's yelling at Miku that she's sick and tired of the "po" stuff) and as a kind of branding, like an anime series or sitcom where each character has a distinct personality or quirks. The quirks are real, they just accentuate them. In the MV for "Don't You Tell ME" there's a scene that explicitly lays out each member's "charm point," and both Band-Maiko MVs include a joke about Akane's eating constantly. They actually are all adorably weird, though: Saiki collects bullet-train models costing hundreds of dollars; Kanami posts photos of meals she makes on an Instagram page with one follower, which is Misa; Akane can't cook despite having an insane appetite; Miku is obsessed with Miffy, a children's-book rabbit character; and Misa doesn't actually drink as much as Saiki and Miku. From what I understand from Japanese-speaking fans, they make a lot of interviewers somewhat nervous because they have very little filter and will go off on tangents such as about how Misa has a perfect butt that they slap for good luck before shows, or how Miku gets on their nerves. Miku recently did an interview on the Japan Racing Association's channel and is reportedly part-owner of a racehorse now. She also ate crickets for a fundraiser for storm damage in her hometown. The term they use for Kanami that's translated as "airhead" has a different connotation in Japanese, more like "off in her own world" like an absent-minded genius, a quantum physicist who walks into lampposts. The cutest thing ever was how the hosts at Kannai Devil said that Saiki is scary. Like, she was walking to the dressing room, and the guy was driven into the corner, trying not to make any sound less Saiki would notice him. That was hilarious 😂😋

My favorite part of that one is when Kobato is demonstrating magic time and gets so into it that she actually scares Kanami a little bit.

They are also very artistic-well, except for MISA, but she made it into her "charm point" as well. They exist in this world as an unbreakable entity, always ready to create some harmony together. I remember how I watched "Making Movie" episode for RINNE. It's amazing to see how one girl starts saying something out loud, and the other four immediately harmonize with her, and support each other, whether it's a joke, or just a piece of random conversation. They are bubbling with energy all the time, but what is truly amazing, is that they never at conflict with each other. Those jokes may be quite harsh, but in the end it's always a good laugh, no hurt feelings. BAND-MAID indeed deserves to be the role models for us all.

Although some of it is persona, most of it is the real them. They're a bunch of goofballs. Japanese TV show interviews are like this. I gotta show you some of the BiSH interviews. They're funny too. Magic time, or omajinai time is basically Miku playing her "maid cafe" persona with the audience. It's silly but cute. Also, it's in Japanese most of the time so you probably won't understand half of what she says.
When they were talking about Saiki being a princess, and she mentions that it's in her name, she's referring to the kanji. They show the characters on the screen. Her name is written 彩姫. The first character, 彩, refers to coloring/paint/makeup. The second character, 姫, means princess or beautiful woman. One of Saiki's nicknames is Sai-Hime. Sai comes from the first half of her name, and Hime comes from a different pronunciation of 姫. When that kanji stands on it's own, it is pronounced "hime," and it means "young lady of noble birth," or "princess." So, "Sai-Hime" is like saying "Princess Sai." The joke about the "mother riding a motorbike" refers to girl motorcycle gangs that used to be a thing decades ago (Japanese bike gangs have been disappearing in recent years). Saiki mentions her wearing a long skirt, and the interviewer asks about her mother having a bag with "things" in it. There were different kinds of girl delinquents. Some were girl members of the bousouzoku, or delinquent youth motorcycle gangs. Sukeban gangs were another type of young delinquent girl gangs not specifically tied to motorcycle culture. She has a degree in Economics. She studied that regular degree in college as a concession to her parents, even though she wanted to go into a career in music. As far as Miku's love of horse racing, that has gone back to when she was a child and used to play a chocobo themed racing console game, and her mother (might have been grandmother) said it was like horse racing. That was when Miku discovered horse racing, and she's been a fan ever since. There are a couple of interviews she's done specifically about horse racing that have aired on local TV at various places in Japan, and they used to be on RU-vid, but always seem to get pulled down. There was one that followed her through all of the races she bet on and showed the results of each race. Recently, within the last two weeks, she appeared on a television show on a station in Japan dedicated to horse racing. I'm sure someone will upload the appearance onto RU-vid at some point, but no idea if subtitles will ever appear for it. Akane is not the "leader" anymore, it was something they did when the band started cuz they were a little disorganized. I believe in interviews their personalities are a little exaggerated but I think what you see here is pretty close to how they normally are. Kanami definitely plays it up loving Saiki for the crowd and in interviews, but you know she still loves her for real just not as crazy.
Try to find a group of celebrities in the west that have that kid of connection to each other. They are to much fun. Great watch guys . Ty for doing these .

Actually there is a multipart interview where I think you see a bit more of their real personalities. They are still a bit in character but the interview seems much less scripted and they go into more details and they drop their guard a bit more. Yeah the kannai devil interview is cool to watch on your own probably. They do 5 episodes a year for 4 (?) years now so they get more into whatever. They're quite funny too like the gold rush one. Sadly, not all the episodes are subbed :( There's usually a summary by fans in the comments though. Misa's (only?) proper interview is a sound only one for radio, where the interviewer is a genius and invited her for beer 1st (it's sponsored by beer company Sapporo actually, just search "Misa interview Sapporo").

I do think that Miku is probably the only genuinely outgoing one. They do all muck about a lot more in their own videos, but they will obviously be in the company of people they are relaxed with for those, not in a TV interview. They do have a lot of fun on stage too, possibly more on overseas tours due to the more intimate venues, and smaller stages.
You can't go wrong if you play Real Existence mv or live . Miku's Magic Time is a great way to see her humor I think there's several videos of it out there.
