Shepherd shears sheep to save its life. Flystrike maggots attack ewe

When blowflies lay their eggs in a sheep’s wool, they hatch into maggots. Within 2 days of hatching a sheep can be killed by these maggots, which eat into them causing severe wounds. Today? I found a ewe who had a severe infestation. Thankfully I caught it early enough that she will make a full recovery. I hope it’s not too hard to watch, but it is the reality of sheep farming.

poor baby! I didn't know this could happen to them. Thank God you helped her ❤️
@staceyahola4926

This also happens on any neglected animal that has long hair that continues to grow. When it gets wet is when the moisture sets in and there’s nothing you can do about it to get it dry especially if they live in high humidity areas. It happens to dogs on their ears on their neck all over their body that gets wet and stays that way for a year or so. It is absolutely neglect at the finest and a lot of farmers. Don’t care sadly.
@Foxobot
@Foxobot Год назад
@staceyahola4926 flystrike can also occur on non mammals. We had tiny baby worm snakes that were only a month old get flystrike from tiny gnats that got in the house. It is not always neglect. The gnats laid tiny eggs in the water droplets on the glass from our misting system. This snake needs humidity to shed properly so it was just a bad circumstance. We only noticed when they had bumps under some of their tiny scales, these snakes were only a few inches long. By then it was too late. It doesn't take long to chew through an animal so small.

@@staceyahola4926 I am a dog groomer and I have seen this on a couple dogs. Once a border collie, once a Newfoundland, and the rest are doodle mutts. Every time an overgrown fluffy dog comes in and the owner says “he swims so he’s a bit gross 😊” I mentally prepare myself to see maggots underneath the coat and sometimes they have burrowed into the skin…

Its called Fly Strike, it can take the tiniest of wounds for multiple flies to get in and lay eggs that all hatch. This would have happened in a matter of days, having worked on a mixed arable and livestock farm for three years he did a great job of removing the fleece and treating with antibiotic spray, she would have recovered pretty quickly!

Typically sheep will have their heads held low, and they might appear agitated. A mottled dark patch on their wool and a few flies buzzing around them are sure indicators of an infestation. The life cycle of these maggots is 2 to 3 days before becoming flies, in that time they’ll kill a sheep, so it’s something that you have to keep an eye out for at certain times of year.

This is why you should always periodically inspect your animals whether they are your pets or your livestock Even a simple scratch can turn into this kind of nightmare if the flies find it. Even well groomed animals are not 100% guaranteed to not have this happen. Significantly less at eisk, but never impossible. Always do your best to keep fly populations low. Especially if you have species of flies that attack live flesh

This is a sad situation of neglect! This also happens with dogs. I am a dog groomer and have had a few cases such as this with cocker spaniels and poodles. If that skin and hair become wet and have no way to dry… I.e.… High humidity or in the winter. The minute heat is involved it will continue to grow and make sores eventually. The maggots can bore their way into the animal. Keeping a close eye on your babies. It starts from flies laying eggs most generally.
@notsofancyfarming
@notsofancyfarming Год назад
No neglect here. A sheep’s wool is very different to a dog’s fur. It’s possible for a perfectly healthy sheep to be stricken with flies. There are risk factors, like dirty wool or sore feet, but even perfectly managed flocks (mine certainly isn’t perfect) can have flystrike on occasion.

This...This is one of the many reasons you have to shear sheep. This is also a reason why a lot of lambs get their tail cut off. When they grow up, their long tail gets really thick wool, just like the rest of their body, which can cause feces and urine to get caught in the wool on the tail, which can lead to fly strike or other diseases.
