As a family make some Middle-Eastern flatbread and lentil soup and imagine what it was like. Then pray an AMEN for the Middle East:
A - AID to reach everyone - especially the sick, injured and vulnerable.
M - MESSAGE - Jesus brings hope and peace. Pray the Church would be a beacon of hope
E - END to all violence and injustice in Israel and Palestine
N - NO more tears. We live with the hope that one day every tear will wiped away at a final banquet. As you eat your meal, pray that many would be at that great feast.
We first came across the Shepherds' Meal idea from a comment Sally Clarkson made in one of her wonderful books, and we've developed the idea by incorporating the prayer for the Middle East. We used to live in Jordan and Lebanon. Flat bread is part of most meals in the Middle East and it’s cheap: 1kg costs 40p in Jordan today! But it’s also considered a sign of God’s provision, so many Middle-Eastern people don’t throw out even stale bread, but reuse it or leave it out on the streets for the stray cats to enjoy.
Lentil soup is cooked during the cold winter nights across villages in the Middle East. Some people think the Middle East is always hot, but in winter it snows in many parts of the region. You can even go skiing in Lebanon!
Recipes:
Middle Eastern Flatbread
7g yeast
150 ml water
1 tbsp honey
450g strong white bread flour
1 ½ tsp salt
100 ml milk
Lentil Soup
Olive oil
2 onions
2 carrots
200g red lentils
2 tins tomatoes
1tbsp tomato puree
800ml vegetable stock
