I was stationed at Sheppard from 1966-1969 as a medical technician at the base hospital, 5th floor surgical ward. We lived in old wooden ww2 barracks along the flight line. I later volunteered for aeromedical school training and after graduation was sent overseas. I spent the balance of my enlistment flying to Vietnam to care for the wounded. My flying also took me to Japan, Guam, wake island, Thailand, Philippines, Okinawa and more.
I was there from Mar - Dec 1970. Enjoyed seeing my dorm, White Hall, at the end of this video. Got trained as a 306F, Electronic Communications and Cryptographic Systems Repair. Lots of interesting memories. There was a movie theater in an old wooden building across the street. Used to hear random creaking and popping noises when you were in there watching movies. The building was deemed unsafe and closed. A short time later on a nice Sunday afternoon it totally collapsed into a pile of sticks. One of the best things was when I got my second stripe I didn't have to march to school anymore.
I was there in 1969 at the end of the year as well. Sent to Dover AFB in late December. Loved Sheppard after being in basic training. Arrived at the base on a Friday night from Lackland. Next morning, Saturday, I woke up late and was shocked there was no instructors other than the squad leaders. Felt I died and went to heaven. Was in the communication technical squadron. You were smart enough to video those times. Wish I had. Made several good friends there. Just turned 18. Sometimes I can feel the early morning air, marching to the school each day. Oh, to be young again.
School there in 1976 - Started in Aircraft Maintenance but was switched to Mainframe Computer Operations. Hung out at the Coffeehouse provided by the Chapel rather than the Airman's Club when I was off-duty. School was 2nd shift from Noon to 6 PM.
Yep! The same snow and ice that was at Sheppard when I was there from January 5 to June 1 of 1987. I absolutely LOVED those 5 months. Teletype Crypto School The Beloved 3775th "Country Club"
I was there November "72 through February "73 for Basic Medical and then Surgical Tech training. They managed to food poison about 400 of us at Thanksgiving and actually closed down our training school for several days while they tried to figure out what happened. Fun times and fond memories. I sometimes wonder whatever became of my classmates- Jim Brown, Dan Kleinfelter, Kay Freuh and a few others. Looks pretty much the same 3 years later including the snow,
Stationed there in 64-65 Air Base Group, great memories there. I see they are still big on walking there, couldn't find the Airman's Club, pool, or flight line.
Vintage footage! I was there April-November of '72 so I escaped most of the winter - but I SURE remember the summer. I was in one of the then-new "1000-man" twin dorms, which are now long gone. the only buiding number I remember is 1020 where our teletype maintenance course was taught. Times change.
Was stationed there twice. First for tech school then in 1978 as an instructor at the Dental School until the tornado hit in 1979. Left WF not soon after!
At Sheppard in 1976 for Aircraft Maintenance jets 1&2. Then on to 1st TFW at Langley AFB on the F-15A. First operational F-15 wing. Then 57 FWW at Nellis AFB Silver Squadron. Odibbe Young Again!
I was there at that time. As a snot nose school kid and I went back for Training Manager tech school (751X0). My dad was a Data Processing instructor at Shepard. Still love that place.
Oh damn I was there in 1990 at club med. I remember wearing those same ice cream man suits. I think the squadron was 3796.. this footage is awesome. Thanks for posting. That training building looked the same in 1990 as well!
Noel-The She-Male don’t seem much of the local populace here besides any of the civilians who work at dfacs or else where currently on can’t leave the base due to covid but from those i’ve meet they’ve all been very nice
I was sent there after BT from Sep. 1979 to Jan. 1980 and was trained as a telephone linesman / cable splicer. Then I was sent to my first duty station, Norton AFB, California. My family lived about 60 miles away in East Los Angeles . I went home just about every weekend unless I was TDY. I went back to Sheppard in 1987 to learn how to splice fiber optic cable's. I had fun going back there twice.
I was born there & we lived there 2 times. (Capehart housing. Pioneer St. & Century St.) After returning from Clark AFB, Philippines, my dad, SMsgt. Floyd Pollard, was a Master Instructor (comm. school) there from 1965/6-68. We then moved to Lindsay AS (Wiesbaden) where he retired from the USAF in 1971 after 28 years service. I was born there in May 1960. The hospital I was born in was destroyed by a tornado in like 1963/4. My little sister was born in the new hospital in 1967.
Dec 66-March 1967 MHC - COLD ! But the outdoor Boy Scout like Bivouac and nighttime airplane cash evacuation was some of the best times while in the AF..GREAT CAMARADERIE
I'm actually at Sheppard now for Jet Engine Mishap School. Last time I was here was 2007 for 7 lvl school but was here in Oct 00-Feb01 for Jet Engine/Aerospace Propulsion School. I believe your building medical building is one of the last legacy dorms standing. My old dorms Codner hall built in 72 are not gone.
@@minimoe2008 Those are the only brick ones I remember from 1969. I just wondered if they added any more or upgraded these in some way. Thanks for the info.
@@bt10ant Oh yes sir. Several more were added after this building. 6 in total that I can remember. Hogan Hall and 1 other one which I can't remember are still there
I was at Sheppard in Feb - Jun 69 At School of Healthcare Sciences for Basic Med Helper and then in Medical Admin school (906X0) until Aug. We were in the old WW2 wood open-bay barracks at first, then down the hill near the Airmens club. Marched to SHCS along the Flight line each AM. School was over at 1200 and we marched back through "Noon Toon" where all squadrons passed in review until we got to the Dining hall. Day in, Day Out! I retired as a MSgt after 21 years at WPAFB Ohio as a 906X0. it was converted to 4AO later. Since that school is in Ft Sam, i would guess the SHCS was discontinued there. Served in Tachikawa/Yokota AB Japan for 25 months, Barksdale AFB 71 -72 (16 mo), Base of preference at Robins AFB Ga 73 - 79 (AFLC NCO Leadership Honor Grad, Top 5 grad in NCO Academy there). Then Ramstein Germany for 4 years 79 - 83. Came to WPAFB and a Brand new Hospital remodel/addition and retired in 89. BEST CHOICES I EVER MADE AND WOULD GO BACK TO DO IT ALL AGAIN. Since, had quad by-pass Heart Surgery in 2014 while Volunteer Coordinator at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton. I told my cardiologist that i wished I could go back in. I was his last patient as his eyesight prevented him from being a Doctor. He recommended that he would never approve something like that since his final diagnosis of "a B-model UFO" would prevent success. His diagnosis was, Bald, Ugly, Fat, and Old. Enjoyed the ride down memory lane.
There 63-64 finance 67153. During the noon review someone of some importance would take the salute. This was usually a visiting dignitary, civilian or military. One time it was a boy scout with his 3 finger salute. The squadron almost as a man whispered "you got to be kidding me' as we passed in review.
@@Wasssssuppppppp6869 Correction, sorry sir. Codner Hall was the old 361 building in 2000 when i was there for Jet engine school. When I went back in 07 for 7 lvl school they emptied the Codner Hall and were moving the trainees over to another dorm. Old ones still but not like Codner Hall. That thing had open bay showers like basic.
