Yeah, especially in America, with its explosive mixture of widespread mental health issues and the ability for every peasant to acquire a gun, there'll surely never be a shortage of violent crimes to analyse. Unfortunately, this is something which is appearing in Europe more and more as well (minus the guns, rather knives and other weapons). Typically, everything you see in the U.S today will make it to the rest of the Western world in 5 to 10 years. Too much wealth, too much freedom, the wrong people reproduce, the wrong people migrate. A big downward spiral.

There's 2 narratives I can think of, the Judge was helping his wife and family escape from the Sheriff, OR the Judge was involved with the teenage daughter, only those 2 things could make sense to shoot someone instantly after finding out something. Either he was messing with the daughter (Judge) or they were good friends and Stines felt he was going behind his back to help his daughter and wife, and from his FB it seems those 2 ARE his life.

A relative of Stine's wife started a go fund me to help the wife and daughter with living expenses. In the description, the relative says that the daughter was not being abused by the judge. The person stated this because they didn't want people giving under false pretenses. That is big because so many people accusing the judge and the they're saying he wasn't guilty of anything abuse wise. My guess is that Stine's wife and daughter possibly were trying to get away from him. The dude looks like he thinks he is above it all and it's his way or the highway. Time will tell and if he doesn't plead and there's a trial it will all come out. BTW the daughter was sitting in his side in the courtroom when they brought him in on October 1. My family that lives in the area says the wife & daughter were trying to leave because the sheriff was controlling & abusive. The judge was helping them. The daughter did an internship at the courthouse & that’s how she knew the judge. The sheriff called his daughter 3x from his phone but she didn’t answer. That’s why the sheriff asked to use the judges phone & when he called the daughter from the judges phone she answered & that’s what set him off. Why wouldn’t the daughter answer her phone when her dad called? Well, because she wanted nothing to do with him. Why would she answer when the judge called - because he was helping her & her mom get away from the sheriff. So between getting sued & his family leaving he snapped.

The sheriff separated from his wife and daughter a month ago. It's likely there was a restraining order as well. Usually the judge that handles divorces, separations and restraining orders is public record, but Letcher County is small, and the Sheriff knows every judge. So judge Mullins I think took the case as a favour and his name was redacted. However, the Sheriff suspected Judge Mullins was involved in the separation and restraining order, so asks him for his phone to see if he can find his wife or daughter's phone new numbers in the judge's phone (The judge might have their numbers so they can message them if Stines continues to harass them). And the Sheriff finds his daughter's phone number his the judge's phone, he realised Judge Mullins is "kidnapper" who has separated him from his family. Given the fact everyone know everyone in that small county, it's possible the judge knew his wife and daughter, and was handling the case for them discreetly as a favour.

The sheriff wanted to find which judge was handling the case, and he found out Judge Mullins was the judge, confirmed by the phone number of his daughter in his phone, so shot him for "kidnapping his family" (the judge might have given his Wife and Daughter his number so they could update him if the Sheriff kept harassing them). Usually the name of a Judge is public record, but Letcher County is small, and the Sheriff knows everyone, so maybe his name was redacted. Anyone else notice in the screengrab of the video that the Judge has a cigarette in his hand? He has 2 cups in front of him, 1 of which I assume he is using as an ashtray. I only bring this up because of the psychology of a smoker's mentality. Stress can cause a smoker to light up. The Judge was also in his robes. It might have been a cigarette before he went back to court, or that cigarette being lit at that point in time could mean something else. It looks like it was lit not long before the first shot was fired. Just something I noticed. I assume since he is using a cup as an ashtray that he doesn't always smoke inside his office. If it was a common occurrence, one would think he would have an actual ashtray. You can tell it is in fact a cigarette, because if you watch the video closely, you can see the smoke rising from it.

It's possible that the Sheriff was abusing his daughter, and believed she disclosed the abuse to the Judge. If that's true, though, it doesn't make sense that he didn't also kill his daughter, and wife, since it was possible that his daughter also made the disclosures to his wife. The video with the Sheriff's daughter caged in the back of the police car is a little weird in that it may suggest a master-slave relationship between the Sheriff and his daughter. Then again, it's possible that, over lunch, the judge told the Sheriff that he was going to make a ruling which would be extremely adverse, maybe life-changing, to the Sheriff, and, in order to prevent entry of such an Order, the Sheriff killed the judge, though that doesn't make much sense since the Sheriff knew, or should have known that another judge would be appointed to the case and would enter the Order/Judgment. A strange case.

There were some allegations that the Sheriff might be abusing his wife and daughter. Perhaps the Judge was trying to help the Sheriff’s daughter and wife in this matter, which would explain why her number was on the Judge’s phone. The claims by the Sheriff that his wife and daughter were being “kidnapped” may have had to do with the Judge assisting the wife in a separation or divorce.

Dr. Grande, I read that there was a bit more to the history there - the civil action against the sheriff that you referred to involved a deputy who repeatedly had sex with a prisoner in the judge's chambers, with the judge condoning this repetitious conduct and apparently, willingly making his chambers available for the deed. This apparently went on for some time and obviously reflected badly on the office of the sheriff as it was his deputy that the judge assisted in the criminal behavior. It seems that in addition to that atrocity, the sheriff had just learned of something going on between the judge and his daughter. Most defendants you discuss have criminal histories or tendencies which you reveal by way of prior incidents but to date, I'm not aware of criminal tendencies or previous bad conduct of the sheriff. The shooting seems to be the only incident of his acting out.

One question… did he watch Commando the night before? And now for my speculation. The judge blackmailed his daughter for a little something something. The dude noticed his daughter acting weird, pried, and she had some sort of emotional break down confession. He too cried like a Sally and for one brief moment they felt closer than they had ever been. With this new found sense of loyalty and bit of delirium he used those last three rounds to suppress whatever truth might come out in any future investigation. Then concocts the kidnapping story based on his daughter’s sudden absence in his life and how that made him feel. He was calm and spoke about fairness suggesting in his own way he felt he was acting rationally and wanted to, at the very least, make sure he got that point across. Judge and daughter… he was infatuated and she felt trapped because she considered her continued participation as a means to end. (Touches head) The word bon bons keeps coming to mind… does that mean anything to anybody here?
