I unfortunately spent a weekend in the Maricopa jail like 7 years ago courtesy of an expired license plate, lol and no….that is not what they served. For the first 24 hours they give you a sack lunch twice that is bread, peanut butter and grapefruit juice and on day two when you have been processed etc., they give you a small tray that is akin to something they would give just out of surgery that wouldn’t fill a 5 year old. The entire time they let you know that they are aware of how shitty the food is and that if you want to eat it, don’t get arrested…lol. (The judge had me released when he found out I had a clean record and had been deployed when my tags expired….I had only been back stateside about 12 days).

Studies have shown time and time again that half of all “criminals” in jail are mentally ill. I had a friend with bipolar disorder and every few years she has an episode and gets thrown in jail instead of getting mental help in a hospital. I remember when she was arrested for “stealing a shower”! So she was very confused one day and ended up knocking on a strangers door. She asked if she could use the phone or something. She then asked to use the restroom. She ended up picking herself in the bathroom and took a shower. The owner was weirded out by it and called the cops and she was arrested. It’s sad because when she’s on her medication she’s totally normal and is so embarrassed by her actions when she’s not on her meds.
@@Dj.MODÆO Here in Canada the prisons serve all deep fried fatty foods. Which might taste good at first but its mostly what people in prison eat. A guard told me once (I wasn't in prison lol) most inmates especially in women's prisons always gain 30-40 pounds over a long stay.

Exactly presumed guilty anyway. I spent a night in jail once and would not eat because there was no soap to wash my hands and eating with dirty hands is disgusting.

This was 5 years ago now. I know when the new Sheriff was elected he got rid of Tent City and the female chain gang. Arpaio prided himself on the food being bad. I think inmates were complaining that the milk was sour sometimes and the food was inedible at times. So I'm wondering 5 years later if the new sheriff made any positive changes to the food. Also is the commissary list better?
if you don't want prison food then don't commit a crime to be put in that position. The only people I feel sorry for are the people in prison who are innocent. So for all you who complain....get over it.

I was in the 'horseshoe' under Arpaio for nine days straight (just like everyone else). They threw bags and bags of green baloney (yes it was green and very rotten as Arpaio promised) and an apple. So many unused bags littering the holding tanks. Few could eat it because it had turned so they just left it and starved for the week. What I remembered most about the holding tanks were the wild temperature variations. In cells so cramped everyone had to stand and never sleep they shut off the air conditioning. It was sweltering. In the lesser crowded tanks the air conditioning was at full throttle and no one had any clothing or blankets to shield themselves. And they also could never sleep. This wasn't an accident. It was textbook crowd control to keep people compliant. You become so exhausted you cannot think or be anything other than a robot.
jail is supposed to be uncomfortable and depressing. This is also county, not state or federal, so it is not long term. As far as I am concerned, county criminals can suffer this until they go to state, federal or released.

I spent 90 days in Lower Buckeye jail. I lost 60 pounds. I’m 5’10” and went to jail weighing 210. Came out at 150 pounds. The food is not meant for human consumption.
You know, I absolutely agree, that if you don't want to starve or eat dog food, don't commit crimes. But I personally think Arizona's jail/prison food takes this to an extreme. I've done some reading on it. First off, they only serve two meals a day. With something like a 16 hour gap between dinner the night before and lunch. I just think that in itself is sad. Second, I read somewhere that the average meal cost per meal in the prison systems is around $2. That's NOT gourmet on ANY level obviously. But in Arizona, average jail meal cost around 50 cents! Arpiao also bragged that he got the cost down because he quit giving any meat to inmates. Instead they get soy based food. So with only 2 meals a day, soy based protein. I don't know. Seems pretty cruel. Also, how much you wanna bet, that those trays presented (that they knew would be on TV) are probably double portions. Or better than average in some regards. I'd LOVE for someone to take those trays presented and one to an inmate and ask if this is what's average meal looks and tastes like. I have a feeling nobody did. Plenty of non violent people go to jail , some are completely innocent. They are forced to be there.. it's just mean to be THAT cheap to anyone. Not to mention the prisoners allergic to soy.. they are extra screwed. Lots of these corrupt politicians make food budget cuts in prisons and the people running the prisons get to keep (personally) these savings. Some of it is done illegally but I think some of it is allowed. The prison system is corrupt AF. The state one's and private profit making one's. These are human beings.
If they are not starving then that is their only right. As long as they get something to live day by day that gives them the nutritional value to serve their sentence should be just that. Their are innocents in everything unfortunately but remember that they aren’t always in there for being innocent.
A good portion of the people in local jail haven’t even been convicted, they just got picked up as a suspect or had a bench warrant or something dumb that they may not even be guilty of. I can see making a convicts life miserable, but a suspects? I don’t know, just seems sadistic.

The sheriff forgets that jail is for people pre-trial. In other words, not everyone in there DID commit a crime. Some of them are undoubtedly innocent and just haven't had a fair trial yet. So why are people who have only been ACCUSED of a crime often subjected to worse treatment than people CONVICTED of a crime?
You're running a COUNTY JAIL, dummy! There may be a third of CONVICTED inmates inside that DETENTION FACILITY, while the other two-thirds are what the courts would refer to as, DETAINEES. What a clown to say, "don't do the crime," without knowing if ALL these people are guilty.

Too many people too feed. Also this would cause a riot in the jail for the more serious inmates that are served garbage and it would literally make things worse then what they already are for the innocent non aggressive inmates and staff. The jails and prisons are given a budget so they buy what works and is cheap.
Only people who have had to eat this garbage know how inhumane it really is. I was in Maricopa county jail for almost two weeks, and as a skinny mofo I had to eat what was provided even if I found it disgusting, which I did. I would choke down these trays of slop immediately after getting them because they space the meals out over 16 hours, and by the end of my two weeks when the judge released me, I couldn’t even feel any happiness or relief because of how sick the food had made me. I was having diarrhea and throwing up this extremely foul dark liquid. When I was in the actual release tank I met a guy who had been working in the kitchens for months and he claimed that rats would frequently taint the food, and the non innate workers would often just send it out anyways. As if being locked up isn’t already punishment enough.
Just goes to show you, this is JAIL, not the Ritz-Carlton. For those that claim this is cruel and inhumane, this isn't. Being intentionally starved and given nothing, THAT'S cruel and inhumane! Those inmates chose not to eat, so they get what they choose to do.

Most of the inmates in a county jail are in there for drug offenses or other minor stuff, they're not the violent child molester rapist scum that deserve to have to live from $1.45 a day. I think given today's food prices $14.50 a day per each inmate is still frugal but that should be the minimum food expense. If that breaks some county's back, just incarcerate less, this is not rocket science.

Ummm. Actually they are getting starved. They probably get only 1000 calories a day and no real proteins since there is no meat. Plus they don't get any vitamin B12 or D. They should ask the Sheriff if he ever eats a meal from there? or has any officer ever eaten the food there? when green beans are gray, milk is soured, noodles are every meal and cooked for till they are mush.
I don't know the full extent of this situation over there (I'm in UK) but some of the food trays being served up is absolutely atrocious. Treat people worse than animals so to speak then expect them to act as much. I bet the prisons that serve this muck have high commissary sales,no doubt at 5 times retail cost too 🤔
im also in the uk and spent many years in prison the food they give in the USA is beyond belief they also use food as a punishment over there by taking food away and giving something called nutraloaf as punishment

Homeless people are free not in prison. They don't deserve anything because they are still free. Aka work for it. In Prison these inmates have to be fed because it's a institution. A homeless bum on the street has no right to food unless they go get it themselves.
