No idea why this song didn't chart higher than #61 in the US, in '83. Kudos, though, to the MD in Las Vegas, who re-broke it in America. Billboard's 720th #1 hit of the rock era. God bless! Hugs to ya, for postin' it!
Sheriif sold millions of albums, toured the world, they had alot of great songs and are one of the greatest rock bands of all time, this is real music, this song was a big hit worldwide and a number one song in many countries, great song, this is real music :)
The band was formed in 1979 in Toronto and consisted of vocalist Freddy Curci, guitarist Steve DeMarchi, keyboardist Arnold Lanni, bassist Wolf Hassel and drummer Rob Elliott.[1] The band's only release was a self-titled 1982 album that featured a Canadian Top 40 hit, "You Remind Me" as well as their most famous song, "When I'm with You", which reached #1 in Canada and #61 in the USA in 1983.[1]
@raisedonaradio -- Correct you are. My station was one of the few in the U.S. who played the heck out of it on the first release, and being a college town, it was a big local hit. Thank God some Program Directors back then hadn't sold out and still took chances. I was SO pleased when on the re-release it finally caught fire w/ the rest of America. Epic, epic love song. I listen to it at least once a week.
Six years after "When I'm with You" had been a chart hit in Canada, a DJ in New York began playing the song. It subsequently became #1 in the United States in 1989. This success eventually led to Curci and DeMarchi returning to the music scene in a band called Alias, who in the early 1990s had two very popular singles, with "Waiting For Love" and their #2 smash "More Than Words Can Say".[1]
Great song. The lead singer, Freddy Curci, was also the front man for Alias. He sung their hit "More Than Words Can Say." According to Wikipedia, his final note on this song was timed at 30 seconds--the longest note ever for a pop song.
artanisdio: The copyright date on my lp is 1982. I bought the album after hearing it on WJMU, Decatur, Il. The lp differs slightly from the cd, especially the last song, Give Me Rock and Roll. It's well worth hearing the lp.
Canadian band entered Billboard May 14, 1983 ..reached #61 and #8 in Canada..then in Feb 1989 reached #1 in Billboard and #1 in Canada (hits the last note for 25 seconds)
Saw this live at a university cabaret; I thought it would make a huge hit - I believe they released it as a single in 1983, but in the US it didn`t get far. About 5 or 6 years later it started getting airtime again, this time however `went viral` so to speak, and went #1.
You cut the song off at the end, turning the volume down before i twas over. That's a real shame with this song because at one time (maybe still today) it was a record for the longest ending note of a song in pop music. Such a tragedy that we didn't get to hear all of what set this song apart from every other ballad of that era!
Too bad it didn't make it in '83, when it was 1st released. Took a rerelease in '89 to get it to #1 here in America. Billboard's #37 hit of '89. Sheriff hit #1 pop, and, AC, in Billboard. How'd it do in Canada, in '83. God bless!
@gregwiggle Aaaaw that sounds so romantic! I´ve got this vision in my head since I was a teenager! ^^ Seems yours came true! Nice! All the best for you both! :-)
