The Story Sheringham, a small town on the North Norfolk Coast in East Anglia. Local historian, Tim Groves, tells the story of the growth of the town and shares some rare vintage photographs, some of which are over 100 years old. The beach, the shops and the people - and how the fisher-folk and holiday tourists learnt to live within a symbiotic relationship.

I can absolutely confirm that Scott stayed at the Burlington prior to his last journey to Antarctica. In the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Auckland, New Zealand is a letter, written by Scott and detailing things to be done prior to departure, which is written on the Burlington's letterhead.

Although I have not been in Sheringham for more than 60 years, I still recall Pratt's as cobblers. I have good reason. On one occasion my parents, (Dad was in the Army at Weybourne and we lived in Heath Road) took the family to London to visit relatives. I was unable to find my best shoes and it was concluded that I had either left them at school, or lost them. My punishment for this, shoes being an expensive item, was to have my pocket money withheld in London, where there were many things to spend pocket money on. It was a thoroughly rotten fortnight! On our return my mother happened to take us into Pratt's, (I can smell the leather as I write), and the assistant, who may well have been Mr Pratt, pointed out that my mother had left a pair of my shoes for repair some time previously, and had not collected them. Grrr!

Great video and history. I'm an American who's mother is from Sheringham (nee Cox) and had the wonderful fortune to live there for over a decade between age 9 and almost 22 (spent a year in Norwich too). Went to the old primary school and Sheringham Secondary Modern, and was very active in the Salvation Army. I still have many friends and family in the area and visit as often as I can - including visits to The Mo. I performed with the SA Band at the original Mo back in the 70s. Thanks for the video.

Please tell me, what years were you at Sheringham Primary, I also went there from 1953 to 1958. I knew several American kids from Sheringham, mostly their fathers were based at Sculthorpe Air Force Base.

@@Purlee100 Hey there - I went to the primary from 1967-68, then the Secondary modern from '69-73. My father served at Sculthorpe and married my mother in 53 - they are still together and will be in Sheringham next month celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary.

@@tubadude905 You were a bit after me. The school I went to was in Barford Road, but I understand that it has been demolished and a new school built near the secondary modern school. I went to the opening of the secondary school in about 1957 or 58.

@@Purlee100 Yep, although I also went to the primary school on Barford Rd. We lived for a short while on Cremer St right down the road and used to get sweets from the corner store on Cremer St and New Rd. Its a wonderful part of the world.

How the hell could they knock down the grand hotel and then put up hideous ugly looking flats? They should have not been allowed.
