In an interview, Mr. Rathbone said that while his sister was musically inclined, he regrets never having the interest in playing a musical instrument. In all the movies, Rathbone is faking playing the violin.

It might be a tv version, but Jeremy Brett is undoubtedly the Holmes to compare with. He only did the Conan Doyle stories, and he did all of them. Brilliantly. Rathbone did very few original stories, which were Americanised, including the use of lots of guns. Not to mention the regular use of the term ‘scotch’ when referring to Scots. They are entertaining films, which I always enjoy, just not very true to Conan Doyle’s intentions.

You know, I really think this may be the highest quality Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes film. It works in references to Holmes' canonical adventures, showcases Watson's writing skill (through it's effect on others, if not by actually showing it), has some very touching moments between Holmes and Watson, has reasonably clever villains with an original enough plot, and on the side of the heroes this film really exudes the warmth that came to characterize The Baker Street Dozen in a different way than many of the numerous other portrayals of the detective and company.

Not quite the highest quality film in the series. Dressed To Kill is actually the second iteration of the original ACD story "The Six Napoleons". The first one was 1944's The Pearl Of Death, which, in my view, was closer to the original and a bit better, both for the tension level and one of the few times Holmes gets tripped up by his own ego -which his antagonist takes advantage of twice. But this one was an upswing from the very cheap and unimaginative Terror By Night, does indeed feature some of the best character scenes between Rathbone and Bruce, and was a better movie for the series to go out on than its immediate predecessor film.

What a wonderful Sherlock Holmes film. Fast-paced, with just the right amount of humor and intrigue. I was put off at the outset however, by the old lech Stinky, who met his demise. If Holmes is so smart, why would he: 1. Trust Watson with possession of the 3rd music box and 2. Why would he even keep it? Once he broke the code, he could have destroyed it or given it to Scotland Yard so the villains could never get possession of it, as it no longer was any use to him, but would be disastrous if the villains stole it. Hiding in a cookie jar... yup... really smart there, Sherlock.

I never get tired of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes series. Universal really did a fine job of producing these films. Classy dialogue & scripts, good actors & sets. The stunning Mrs. Courtney (Patricia Morison) had one hell of a figure. She even appeared in the NBC classic 1989 TV show Cheers. She had a long successful career on stage & TV. Looked quite attractive into old age. She passed away on May 20, 2018, at 103. Continuity issue: when Watson placed the biscuit box down one wig head on the table had a Holmes cap on it. When Rathbone went to get a suitcase off the table that head had no cap on it. (I've been watching these detective tales too much). This was an ingenious episode. So good, that I'm sure the writers of The Wild Wild West TV series in the 60s adapted it for an episode ("The Night of the Janus") when the clue to their mystery was in a sheet music melody called "Two-Faced Stranger In the Garden." Singer Jackie DeShannon sang it & apparently the melody was a Morse code type of notation from the notes when played backward fast. Great episode.

It is amazing the extent in those days to which nobody bothered to even try to make the scenes authentic for the time. This is entirely 1940's and not remotely 1890's, people speak 1940's, dress 1940's, look 1940's and even the interiors dont look Victorian. The film even goes so far as to throw in anti-German propaganda folling the end of the Second World War "Germans use it effectively to remove desirables."

ok in other movies they've done this so idk why they didn't in this one... the man who stole the plates only had 15 minutes to hide them before he was caught so they only needed to search a radius around the bank of england that would equal about 15 minutes though they could narrow that further by showing where he was caught exactly and going in a bit of a straight line back toward the bank. if they use it in one movie about SH same actors etc surely they'd remember to use it in another!

Interesting the amount of smoke in this film. First shot of Holmes and Watson is of Holmes in front of a fireplace and Watson smoking a pipe. A bit later, Sherlock Holmes lights up his pipe. Holmes manages to track down our villain Hilda Courtney via some ashes left behind the first time she & her cohorts tried to steal the music box Holmes had gotten. While at Courtney's flat, he is offered a cigarette of the same variety. And while driving to his scheduled death, Holmes asks for a cigarette in a ploy to get the key. Then Holmes is almost killed via smoke from some device placed on an automobile engine. Meanwhile a smoke bomb is used by Ms. Courtney in a 2nd successful attempt to swipe the music box at 221B. While Holmes is trying to break the code of the musical boxes, he is smoking away on his pipe which Watson even comments on. Perhaps this film should have been called: "Sherlock Holmes Faces Smoke".

I still feel that Sherlock Holmes works best in the 19th century; obviously a huge amount of money is saved setting it contemporaneously, but there’s something sinister in the atomic structure of Victorian London (one of the major losses of electrification; atmosphere). As for Rathbone, a character only possible in late British imperium; ie an actual gent. Here in mesmeric intensity that defines Holmes. Interesting that the part is regarded as a curse in Britain (Jeremy Brett was warned to go nowhere near it) apparently because of the effects of letting that personality into your head. It’s not easy to play the clown and Bruce did it well. A shame he was obliged to.

I wonder if these films in the series were filmed in the UK during the war years or in the US?

Dr. Watson was really slow...how could Holmes put up with him without being snide?

Pity that none of the Rathbone/Bruce flicks included “The Woman” in them.
