THAT IS VERY MUCH A CHICK THING!! I have played with many GREAT female players over the years and they ARE different from playing with guys. They tend to dress better and match clothes and gear. They play with more emotion than most males, which often translates to a different sound. Most importantly, they try harder when you treat them respectfully and as equals and are loyal to the project.
I already love my Harmony Bobkat to death but that fact that you guys are rocking them too makes its all the more special, big fan of your work in music !!
I had a 60s catalog surf guitar, also with amazing tone, but sadly with shite intonation and awful tuners. Fun to play for about 1 song, but it looked Killer! You two sound great!
The thing I love most about this is that while most amateur guitarists obsess about their guitars, pedals, amps, set-ups, strings, blah, blah, blah, Shermy and Nicole acknowledge the imperfections of their guitars, and then rock out on them. Good lesson here. Stop obsessing about the gear and friggin' practice your playing. Thanks for posting these videos. I'm curious how you get your sound.
Awesome. Those guitars are hard to play. I used to have one. Look at it cross and it would fly out of tune. L! You girls wrangle them good. Much love from down south in southern New Mexico USA.
Great tune. I like how you got your excuses in early regarding the guitars. We all started off with what we could afford before knowing what we really wanted. Keep the couch surfing coming
Love the guitars, particularly the moment at the beginning when the light catches the crazing on Shermy's Bobkat. I mainly play a Silvertone 1446, and had the same intonation issues with the stock floating bridge. I asked my local luthier to install a Tune-O-Matic bridge instead, and it's made all the difference. It's not stock anymore, but what's the point of a guitar if you can't play it? And with those gorgeous DeArmond Gold Foil pickups, it may be worth the trouble :-)
My grandmother got me one of those Harmony guitars with S&H Green Stamps back in 1969. I think her tounge wore out licking all those stamps. I recently found an old Silvertone 15W tube amp at the dump and took it home. The power supply was toast. You could smell it. I found a Fender amp power supply that was really close to the original power supply specs. Now I wish I still had that Harmony guitar. Enjoyed your song ladies, look forward to hearing it in-person some day. Hope you can get out and play to a packed audience soon. Live music is the best!!
OMG! My Mom got me an acoustic (my first) guitar with S&H. I kept breaking strings because I didn't know how to tune it. The strings were about half an inch away from the fretboard. Frustrated, I Pete Townshened it in my bedroom doorway. Took another stab at it with an electric and have been playing for 50 years. When I saw this vid I just got done playing some slide on a Harmony identical to Nicole's. It has the whammy bar like the other one though. There are probably thousands of green stamp guitar stories.
Awesome video! We had a band in high school from '70-'72. Our guitar player had a sunburst model. True to form it wouldn't stay in tune & the intonation was terrible, BUT he LOVED that guitar! U guys sound great, hope to hear you live someday-post Covid...
These "couch surfin" segments are great! Been a fan for a few months. Did I miss one though, where you talk about your amps and any effects? For everything you said were shortfalls of these guitars, they sound fantastic together.
My first electric was a Silvertone back in 1971...I don't think it was a Bobcat but it was similar. One of my cats likes to chew and lick my guitar strings while I'm playing, sometimes he'll even paw at the fretboard. I really think he's trying to play along with me, lol.
Thank you ladies you look and sound fab as usual. Love the tone of these Guitars. Thanks for bring me cheer during these difficult times. Really hoping to see you in England one day. BTW Shermy you look so cute wearing pigtails ❤️❤️
Funny. I've got a late 90's Danelectro U2, with the same cat bite marks on a couple of tuning keys. I know exactly what cat did it too. Lol. Love you guys!!
My cat likes to lay his cheek and throat against the top of my Strat's neck. He likes to feel the vibration. And doesn't care at all that his head is an obstacle. He figures I can just improvise around him. I love the 60.'s vibe of those drop dead beautiful Harmony's and as always you guys sound incredible. Thank you for sharing !
Having grown up in Southern Cal and Hawaii as a beach bum Moondoggie along with my siblings, we ALL have loved "Surf Music" and it's part of my DNA first and foremost. My oldest brother had a Bobkat when we were growing up and he was Rad on that Beast. I continue to stay groovy and strut as I'm hoping All Of The Surfajettes and their Fans are doing too! Cheers
Or they are people of Gibson who are dissatisfied because Shermy and Nicole still have not presented their Gibson-guitars. I think both still have their Gibson-guitars. Shermy still owns a SG, I think. Maybe they could change the style for one video and play for example some hard rock or something similar on their Gibson-guitars. I have found an old video on Instagram in which they play some hard rock together.
Before these became "collectable" they were quite literally the guitars nobody wanted! They sounded good here though, Girls! I was waiting for a comment about the baseball bat necks that all Harmonies seem to have.
Had a Rocket II that i miss. Played a used one (Black Market Music SF) in the early '00s and couldn't believe how slim the neck was. Broom stick :). Played a RI in '10 or so. Felt a bit more normal. Wish i had any of them.
DOTS! I had to use a hole-punch on some white tape and stick them on the top edge of the neck of mine (an H45 from 1959). Low-tech but it works :) Also the cat story is hilarious and awesome
Steve Cropper tells the story that we guitarists just let the audience believe we know where to put our fingers through pure talent and is entertainingly cagey about letting on about the dots.
My friend carved a custom Corian bridge for my Bobkat (Holiday branded). it is a work of art. I now would like to replace the mini pots with different pots. Fabulous demo song! Fender Excelsior?
Sweet! Love the old Harmony guitars. I have a 1963 Harmony Stratotone Holiday. Those old foil pickups have a sound of their own. They do have quirks but what a joy to play.
Sorry, but the sunburst isn't an H17. It's an H15. I own a 1963 H17. The H17 only came in redburst and had a vibrato unit. www.vintageguitarandbass.com/harmony/silhouette.php
$56 in 1965 is approx $500 in 2021 - which is still right in the ballpark for these, as most sell used, today, between $600-700. I'm quite sure there are many exceptions, but a simple Google search shows they haven't appreciated much when compared against its rate of inflation. They have certainly maintained their value, though.
Great video - hope those (originally) bargain basement guitars stay in tune, and the intonation is not too far off. Sometimes they need a bit of a tweek? But you sure play them great. I have a 1959 Antoria/Guyatone and the action is ok at the nut, but don't try to go up the bridge end LOL. Do you use flatwound strings? They very popular when I started to play in 1960. Kindest regards from England.
I'm serious... You guys give so much life to my life! Shermy is the sweetest and so intelligent and cool and Nicole I fell completely in love with seeing the video of Banzai Pipeline at that festival. You were SO ultimately cool! I watch your videos, along with other good music from Genesis to Hüsker Dü, Tom Waits to The Replacements. My God!!! You just started playing Cha Cha Heels!!! That's yours!!??? Toronto #1! "In a Hong Kong Drizzle on Cuban Heels, I rolled down the gutter to the bloodbank......I talked baseball with the Lieutenant over a Singapore Sling.... Come on girls!! My brother (Nelson Ferreira IMDb was nominated for a film Oscar for his work on THE SHAPE OF WATER!!!!! I live 2 hours away in London. Can I come to Toronto and we can hang out? No issues.
I have a 1964 H14 and it plays and sounds wonderful I really don't have any problems with the intonation... From what I understand these guitars were sold by montgomery wards out of the catalog and sears had the silver tone. They have no truss rod but my neck is straight as an arrow very comfortable lightweight and easy to play as you say did the arm and gold foil pickups are instant Robert Cray plugged directly into a Fender... I have tens of thousands of dollars wrapped up in guitars and I bought my bobkat at an antique/thrift store with the matching amp for $250 it holds its own against any of my other guitars and has a tone unique to itself. This guitar makes me second guess any of my other purchases... it's obvious that a great guitar can be made and stand the test of time for an affordable price. Oh and you two are beautiful I just want to bring my bobkat and hang out in the room with you 🥰
I had a 1977 exact copy of a Fender Stratocaster it was made by Ibanez . Fender sued Ibanez over this guitar , 3 colour sunburst and maple neck large headstock . Excellent Quality , I bought it new in Streetsville Ont . I sold it to a musician who looks and sounds just like Ringo Star .
No harm in getting your blue guitar set up by a professional. It's old and probably needs some adjustments. Should play great. You don't need new frets do you?
Electric guitars always sound blokey to me so it's really something when a female plays one. Especially a pretty female and Shermy and Nicole are both quite pretty as well as being talented guitar players.
I understand the interesting nature of these guitars, but they really don't have good quality, as you admit. Their cool features appear to be light weight (due to cheaper/lighter wood) and fashion. Invest in a Jazzmaster, which has the best surf sound around. Though it is a bit on the heavy side for performances.
I have one with the same finish as Nicole, but not in as good condition. My wife bought it used and gave it to me for the 1st Christmas after we were married in 1964. I did add strap locks, but otherwise it is original.
Thanks, for the video. I didn't know about these guitars. I'm sure we must have had equivalents in the UK but different brands probably. .... Have you repainted your amps grey?!
Awesome guitars. I believe they make a roller bridge for those and I seen one with a tune o matic bridge too. I would like to hear from your bassist on her Danelectro long horn bass. Or other basses she uses
I would have trouble with my guitar staying in tune on stage too-all those bad notes! I had to explain to the audience afterward that it was the guitar's fault, not mine.
@@anthonyz7000 I could imagine social distance is really the problem or the matter. I do not know how the rules are in Canada or for this region in Canada actually. Here you can only meet with one more person from another home. Okay, Shermy and Nicole are roommates. But the person on the camera could be already the person who is additionally allowed. When Sarah appeared in the Christmas-video you can hear him laugh in the background. Sarah staying outside looked funny but it was also the way to realize the social distance, I think. Maybe Sarah could appear in a virtual window like Shermy in the Christmas video playing drums. Here some bands during the first lockdown formed a "Society under civil law" to be a company. So they could rehearsal. I have strictly translated it. It is a group of freelancers. The Covid-19-rules for companies are here different, I think in most countries. Certainly the virus does not care if it is in a company. I think the Surfrajettes want to show that they take Covid-19 seriously.
@@Mountainrock70 If it makes you happy, I can do :-). I am certainly not the press officer of the band, I just guessed. I have no job here. I only want to share a musical passion. If I disturbed a float or was theme-breaking, I am sorry.
The most beautiful ladies in a band today . Thank you for keeping this style of music alive. Hearing your band play takes people back to a time that was so super cool . I was born at the end of that Era but was still able to grow up hearing the surfer sound ♥️♥️♥️🤟
I have a Bobcat like Nicole that I bought after having a red one I bought for $40 at a pawnshop for years and loved it. They’re quirky but very 60s cool. Love your vids.
I swear to god when you two play you've got some kind of telepathy going on. Not very many musicians experience that. It's a very rare & special thing. I hope you two play together for many years to come.
I am a very intuitive person, always have been. I feel a very real vibe about the two of you musically speaking. Mark my words! Something very special is coming in your direction. Now be careful, too many people equate success with money. Not so. success comes and then the money comes in good time later. Stick together otherwise your grand plan will fall through. best of luck...
