Mr. Milnes gave a recital at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, back in the late 70’s or early 80’s. It was a warm evening, and the theatre was not air conditioned. He warmed up with his window open while the audience sat on the lawn listening to that magnificent voice. He was amazing.
do you guys see how freaking epic this is? the conductor and orchestra are so freaking spot on. Sherrill moving with intent throughout the entire song. great chemistry and performance!
I adore his voice. The 1976 Met production of I Puritani with Sutherland, Pavarotti, Morris and Milnes is one of my favorite casts; selections are on RU-vid.
That's a really interesting comment. I personally can think of two musical roles he would have been great in: Frank Butler in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and Miles Gloriosus in A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM. I could definitely "hear" him singing the Phantom's music, too.
