This video is about Sherwood Spiral head Thicknesser which is a World first dedicated Spiral Helical cutter head presented in a small 13" / 330mm Thicknessing machine.
This small machine packs quite a punch when it comes to removing softwoods and hardwoods via the amazing helical head inclusion.
This world first innovation opens up a fantastic new option for keen woodworkers and is priced very well in comparison to larger type machines.

After researching thicknessers for a while but having found no reviews on the Sherwood, I bit the bullet and ordered one. I picked mine up in mid October and couldn't be happier with it. I have never owned one before so can't speak for the noise other than to say it is a lot quieter than my hand planer. The finish is bloody ace on all the timber I have tried so far. As you pointed out the 4 sides to each carbide blade should give a truckload of service when rotating them. Most welcome as I am running mostly Jarrah through mine as well! Great review mate, I would have been less nervous in purchasing it if this review had been out before I pulled the trigger. Having played with it now for a couple of months definitely no regrets!

G’day mate, I’m extremely happy to hear your assessment on the Thicknesser & I to am really happy to have purchased it. I was contemplating going a larger size & I looked at all options out there but the price just grew dramatically so back to the drawing board I went & decided that I wouldn’t have the need for anything larger. That helical spiral head is a brilliant idea & I think we’ll both get great usage from it 🍻👍👍👍

G’day mate, I’m not making videos anymore but you can make an adjustment I. Lift the infeed arm & you will see adjustment screws which if you turn them anticlockwise it lifts your infeed angle that helps negate the snipe & I think it’s the same on the outfeed side mate. This helped reduce the snipe I was getting. Good luck 🇦🇺🍻🤘

Hello my friend Dirk, Thank you for the information about this thickening machine with a different system. Especially the Special spiral Helical cutter head is interesting and I learned it for the first time. It is also great that it has a steel case. A solid machine. It is very good that it offers high cutting quality. This is also a good option in my opinion. It gives a smooth output. I think a light sanding will be enough. It's also nice that it's partially quiet. The test is successful. Sharing this is a nice video and demonstration for wood lovers. Congratulations. Big warm hug. Stay healthy and happy. I wish you a nice new week. See you. Yours truly.

Looks like a real ripper, mate. I've converted my DeWalt thicknesser and I'm in the process of converting my planer/thicknesser combo machine. I agree with you that spiral head is the way to go. This is really interesting to see Sumo. Just done the calculation to UK £ and that seems great value for money. Hope it makes it way over here at some point. Axminster Tools here do a similar 13” table top spiral cutter thicknesser and it retails at AUS $2,269😳😳😳. Eye watering amount.
@sumosprojects
@sumosprojects 3 года назад
Crickey mate, the Axeminster price is ridiculous 😮😱😳, I think perhaps our proximity to Asia may be a factor as to the pricing so I think that we are very lucky to not have the distance that freight needs to travel. The actual machine is something to consider though should the price be closer to what we pay. Hope you’re well mate 🍻👍👍👍

Looks pretty good for a lunchbox type up there with the dewalt, interesting it has a granite base, ive never seen that before! Whats the cut width capacity?
@sumosprojects
@sumosprojects 3 года назад
Yes the granite base adds easing the weight & cuts down on chatter somewhat & cut capacity is 330mm but I’d run stock shy of that by 20mm. It’s a sturdy machine & the DeWalt one is also pretty nice 🤠🍻👍

4:25 Steel casing? No it's obviously not when you get to inspect it. The top is steel, the bottom is aluminium and the sides are...plastic. The carriage looks heavy duty and is made of aluminium castings it appears and the granite looks ok. I'm sick of Sherwood fobbing off plastic bodies, I bought their spindle sander too and the body is plastic. It's just not good enough, these tools should be durable enough to last decades. I think you should've mentioned the plastic bits in your review.

This is a really useful video Dirk and so many people will be helped by it. I have always wondered how these machines work, thanks to you I know! Many years ago I took apart a wardrobe that was made of 1" thick English oak and made furniture with it. I wish I had been able to use this type of machine. Instead I had to use a hand plane and it was blood sweat and tears! Then mortise and tenon joints with hand tools. I learned a lot though! Thanks again. Keep well and good luck with the dust extraction converter. Eryk 🎬👍😀🍺
@sumosprojects
@sumosprojects 3 года назад
G’day Eryk, we are fortunate as DIYers to have relatively good machines that are affordable to do the chores that hand planes & harder forms of joinery. I think it’s a good thing because of the technology as it helps folks stay active in a hobby by not having to spend the extra hours in doing the restorations you’ve once endured. As you know in the last hundred years of the industrial revolution many great machines were built & many are now sourced as prizes due to there bulk weight & precision. On ya Digger Freethinker, look after yourself cobber 👍👍👍👍
