Shia LaBeouf: Learning to Let Go and Pray

Friends, when Shia LaBeouf first met the Capuchin friars, he was “at the last stop on the train.” But they invited him into a world of laughter, meals, and prayer. They asked nothing of him. They simply wanted his good.
Upon reflection, Shia realized “God was using my ego to draw me to him and away from worldly desires.” The next step was learning to pray.
Shia’s story is one of great hope. Tomorrow, you can watch our full conversation here: • Bishop Barron Presents...

Sounds like he’s starting to remember what it’s like not to be used by other people like Hollywood does. Starting to remember what it’s like to have family who actually love him.

I don’t think he’s ever had that. He’s Jewish he’s not Christian yet. They don’t have families like Christians do. You are looking at him through the lens of your own faith. Judaism is very very different from Christianity. Diametrically opposed.

Shia is evidently a very intelligent man, he is as sharp as a tack. His knowledge of the Catholic faith is super impressive. When he mentioned that he went through St Augustine's Confessions I couldn't help but be super impressed. Welcome Home Shia.
@jacksparrow1057
@jacksparrow1057 2 года назад
What, precisely, did he say that lead you to this conclusion? Going through Augustine's Confessions does not mean he read them. Other than mentioning St. Augustine and knowing a partial bit of the rosary I did not hear any Catholicism. Sharp as a tack? Intelligent? All he said was he petted a cat and ate food with monks.

@@jacksparrow1057 Lol I do see where you're coming and I agree to an extent. We tend to give actors/actresses way too much credit than they actually deserve; for whatever reason playing pretend and doing questionable acts in front of a camera somehow gives the impression that actors are "so, so talented." (In Shakespeare's days an actor (stage/theater) was on equal prestige footing as a prostitute.) It's bizarre that the industry refers to them as the "talent" where they neither direct, write, produce or create the wardrobe. Editors make them look really good. But I think we should give Shia some credit - though he isn't Catholic, he was evidently open to the experience of the supernatural (and not in the ghosts and witches sorta way), and seems to have received the religious brothers and sisters in a positive manner. He didn't act like he was smarter or more enlightened than they were simply because they believed in a divine and followed through with their faith in what could be said to be extreme. His words tells me he is slightly more humble than other actors (i.e. Andrew Garfield) when it comes to spiritual matters and at least looked into the traditions and intellectual library of the faith of the character he was portraying at the time of film production. What he said about the rosary is true - it is a physical, tangible item where the process of praying has a similar effect to meditation. Acknowledging that this part of Catholicism engages are sense of touch is important since it's more complex than it appears.

@@TickleMeElmo55 interesting about the Shakespeare actors. Taylor Marshall put out a video on Shia and it was extremely disgusting it could be used as proof of idol worship. Shia may be genuine, that would be a good thing. I personally have doubts and that comment John J made really baffled me when Shia made an ass of himself with his "He will not divide us" nonsense about Trump.

Hi Bishop , I know you probably are unable to read all of the comments, but if you do can you tell Mr LaBeouf that this interview was a blessing to me and tell him thank you!! I am older, but came back to the Catholic Church a year ago after being away for over for over 40 years. I went through some rough times and did some things I am not proud of. It was good to here someone who is winning the struggle! I have always felt badly for people that are celebrities in Hollywood. Every desire and sin you could want in spades. On the surface it looks good, but you don’t have to dig deep to discover the mistrust, lack of true friends and the lies. It is awesome to see someone in work their way to real peace and joy!!

I had the same thought when I saw this video post. I felt distraught about my age-mates/peers at large and prayed for them almost in defeat, wondering if this will always be a lonely narrow road with no one to look to who actually appreciates the enormous beauty in kind, just knowing there are educated normal modern people who choose the faith and experience conversion after an incredibly human and holy encounter as a young or youngish adult and convert as catechumen other than my patron saint (Augustine) and the Bishop Barron/Fr. Mike community. 5 years Catholic now since my 20’s and I’m increasingly feeling like a unicorn among peers. Which I’m totally ok with, just sad that so little people in real life see the true beauty with the same level of enthusiasm and urgency as I did. I learned that it’s not up to me, but I forget how great God is when we pray. It was so unexpectedly uplifting, just to remember God can catapult anyone into a deep dive that transforms our intellect and ego into faith, wisdom, and charity. Jesus you amaze me

In my opinion, Shia was suffering from severe PTSD after witnessing traumatic things as a child. Hollywood only further compounded these issues, and he spiraled out of control. At no point did anyone try to help him, and he was always looked at as a disgusting villain. But I always felt sorry for him, because it all looked like a cry for help. It makes me happy that he's found faith, and is learning to love and be loved. I hope he continues on his path of recovery and finds peace. Religion isn't an instant cure-all to everything. Life will have its ups and downs. But Church and religion can give you the foundation and tools to deal with those dark moments. And I just hope Shia is surrounded by a community of people who will continue to support him. He has a lot to offer this world. He's incredibly talented and gifted at reaching people through his words.

I am a mother of 10 grown kids and part of it is unconditional love..nothing my kids can do will make me ever turn my back on them..no person..nor rumors...I am so happy to Shia continue to grow and I know all of the things that have happened is because God is bringing him closer to him...and wants nothing from him but his unconditional love as well...so happy he and his mom made up...he is so talented...we all make mistakes...true repentance is learning from those mistakes and turning your back to them...it sounds like he is well on his way to becoming the man I know he can be..the father and husband his wife and child deserve...and the right real friends will find their way into his life...Good luck friend and Godspeed..

I always felt drawn to Shia…even when he hit rock bottom always felt there was something special waiting to come out in him spiritually, when there were no signs of such, and felt a connection. Could not fathom why….until now. Keep going Shia, there will be bumps but this is what you were born for.

I’m very happy he had his “come to Jesus “ moment. Jesus is always the answer. But for him to stay “healthy “ and stay the course, Hollywood must never come back to him. You can only side step those kinds of temptations for so long. I pray he stays connected to Jesus and disconnected to sin city.

Shia! Your last comment at the end of the video reminded me of this line from Isaiah: Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Continue praying.

I am so glad for you, Shia! I went to confession last week & my priest gave me my penance; "Say the rosary. Do you know how to say the rosary?" I flashed back to saying the rosary when I was little & thought "Of course I know how to say the rosary." But I have prayed a rosary everyday since then & it is different. Thanks for sharing!
