A little peak into the art of shield fights. We have created a few scenes to present some intriquate techniques, and show the complexity of the stage combat shield assaults.
Big thanks to our master Peter Koza!

Shields need more love. The only notable characters that use them in fantasy are Peter Pevensie (Narnia) and Link (Legend of Zelda). Wildly under appreciated medieval armament.
@Mylstrydr
@Mylstrydr 2 года назад
I had the same thought. One would think that in worlds full of swords and other melee weapons, not to mention bows/arrows, a shield would be quite valuable tool. The most recent shield-user that got any note from the public (that I'm aware of) was from an anime (Rising of the Shield Hero).

Its not strange at all, shields makes choreography for cinematography a lot harder. And I wouldnt say its rare to see shields in any medieval fantasy setting.

Ahoj Adoreo!

The grappling, trapping and even the throws while deftly handling weapons were quite impressive. HEMA looks a lot more like Kali or Kung Fu in some cases than one might have thought (but at a high level of skill in Combat it inevitably would I now see). Great video.

Shield to the front of the neck, inner thigh, or underarm after a quick parry is a game ender. I liked to see them being used to disarm. The osoto gari at the end with buckler combat was especially sweet.

That actially worried me as the throw at the end was also very dangerous since it looked like the nage did not have proper control of the uke's arm and almost ended up dropping him on his head into the mat less wooden floor.

I think one of the reasons Adorea Olomouc's fighting choreography looks so good and compelling isn't just that it has roots in more realistic techniques. But that it is an actual exchange. We have a lot of fighting scenes in cinema where the hero twirls their sword, parries, blocks and dodges every blow, and their opponents helplessly stand by to wait their turn to get killed. But in these videos you see all combatants involved trade blows. Even when there's a clear protagonist, they take blows as well, they get their own strikes parried and have to deal with a back-and-forth, fighting an opponent rather than some goon where we already know that their proverbial script doesn't extend past a few pages. It's an actual fight that could go either way and you feel the franctic tension. Which is pivotal when you're doing choreography for cinema.
