For those in the crunchy community, there is more noise than ever about the dangers around us and the way things should be done. While navigating her own journey of health and wellness, Emily began to see the humor in this lifestyle. In this conversation, we chat about how Emily got started sharing comedy on the internet to bring levity to what can be stressful. We also dive into what it looks like to maintain balance in this journey- balance in our minds, in our children, in our family relationships, in our social interactions, and more. This episode is a must-listen!
In this episode, we cover:
- How Emily’s crunchy lifestyle choices became viral content
- Finding balance in living a healthy lifestyle without going crazy
- Deciding what your 20% compromises will be in an 80/20 lifestyle
- Evaluating our peace of mind in an age of information overload
- Navigating relationships and social situations as a “crunchy mom”
- Making peace with choosing convenience in some situations
- Behind the scenes of Emily’s content creation process
- How we handle criticism and negativity as content creators
- The best way to encourage independent, creative play in kids

I love this!! Her first viral video coke mom at the party was the first one I saw, and I was hooked! This is so good to see you two together, 80/20 has been my thing for the past 15 years, at least, but in recent years I have had a lot of stress and relationship problems with my family who are definitely on the silky side! It was so stressful and causing me and my kids so much more harm than allowing the sugar or dyes from them, and that's pretty much been my 20! I had to switch my perspective and be the one who makes my family whole healthy foods and treats too from sourdough etc. Let my family members mostly be the 20 for my health and better relationships, which are so much more important. Her recent video about Granndpa and the dumdum.. and the secret.. really relatable, when we're too strict, then the secrets and lies start, Emily's videos have really helped me and so many others! I'm buying her book now, cant wait to read it!

Being crunchy can be an idol if you allow it to consume you and ruin your relationships with people who don’t cook food your way etc. i learned that the hard way years ago at the beginning of my marriage! I do my best for my family, but when I’m around others or at their house, it’s not a concern for me anymore. Because that isn’t the reason we were put on earth.

You guys are lucky in a way because the "crunchy" lifestyle blends in better. When I was a new mom 96, 97 and 99, I was kinda made to feel guilty because I quit working, stayed home with my kids and cooked food. It would have been awesome to have content creators like yourselves to teach and encourage young moms and have creators laugh at ourselves as well as situations about all of it. So now at 48, I am doing the crunch. Unapologetically.
@Rosie_C

It’s true. My mom started having babies in ‘91 and pretty much never used her college degree. She wasn’t (and still isn’t) big into nutrition or non-toxic or anything, but she never did vaccinations and she didn’t take us to the doctor every time we sneezed. She took plenty of flak for those little things.

I have been my version of crunchy for over 16 years, so I absolutely relate to the idea of “I’m on the other side of this.” It is mind-boggling to see the seeming idol of “health” that the community becomes, but this is SOOOO why I think conversations like this are imperative. You can’t focus on ALLLLL of the broken things of this world and maintain mental and emotional health, which is JUST as important as the physical health. I found my balance long ago and I’m so thankful for focusing more on healthy stewardship rather than control. ❤️ I love that you also addressed “expensive crunchy.” This was a big thing we needed to deal with years ago. I have now 8 kids and there’s no way we can afford all organic. So, we do what we can with what we have, try to follow the dirty dozen, and give the rest to God. Such great points in this convo! Great work, ladies!

This is what bothers me too. And it's a mixed bag....some pollutants are of nefarious origins, others beg the question of ethics when it comes to how something is produced (treatment of employees, or even slave labor), and others our of plain ignorance. I don't know about your faith, but if we had Biblical laws, those who harm other peoples' property, steal, or are not truthful would be held accountable.

I think the thing with McDonalds is the Supersize Me documentary- hearing that one burger comes from the meat of 100 cows (or something like that) was jarring to hear😆 and Lisa, when people comment about the lack of kids in the videos etc, I just think “can you have a 20 min long conversation on the phone with a friend without interruption?” They’d likely say no, but also, that’s not their jobbbb😅 people are silly.

Re Mc Donald's - I don't get what you said, that the meat comes from 100 cows? Like, the minced meat is made REALLY big scale - that would make sense, it being MC Donald's - but I also think that would be the same for any of the big fast food chains...?

WOW!! I didn’t know that I was crunchy! But I’ve been crunchy since before it was defined! lol I homeschooled, my boys played outside unrestricted we ate home grown and preserved food and made from scratch meals and treats. I was even using cloth shopping bags before it was a “thing” to do. And the boys rarely got “bored “ and screen time wasn’t an issue because there was always something to so outside. One winter they made “mudmen” because the snow had melted! I so enjoy your videos you are such an inspiration to young families now. Thank you and have a blessed day 🙏

Canned green beans and canned carrots do have nutritional value. It’s far more then not eating any vegetables unless it’s growing season and you can eat them fresh out of the garden. That’s where canned veggies started! Preserve your veggies so that you can still eat some during winter!😁 so it was a wise choice for your grandma back in the day.

Lisa, you changed me life in a sort of retrospective way…. I watched all your birth stories while pregnant with my first. I remember hearing of your car birth and thinking, “there’s NO WAY!” And then two years later, my second, my son, was born in the car 😂

A lovely talk ladies; you both appear to be doing a stand-up job in homemaking and mothering. I am sure you both can see where you view some things differently now than you did in your 20's...on that note, I hope you will open your minds to the misinformation about soy that's out there. It contains phytoestrogens which are not the same as hormonal estrogens and are, in fact, protective. Continued success on your content

I know it's not really the kind of thing that you have a lot of experience with, but I would love for you to have a guest on that speaks about this lifestyle but in th context of having an only child. For example, how to homeschool an only child and how that differs from a big family, how to foster independent play with an only child etc. Homemaking eith an only child. I love your content but find that I don't know how a lot of the childraising advice would apply to an only child scenario. Just a suggestion. She reminded me about this when she was talking about how her kids are great at independent play...they just go out into the woods and play with eachother. Thats so great but with an only thats not really an option so Id love to have someone on that talks about this but in the context of a similar home-steading/ simple lifestyle. Thanks!

Y'all both did a great job in this interview. I enjoy Emily and Jason so much!( And you as well:) . I was very interested in that 80/20 discussion. Also I'm wondering if y'all edited out personal talks on v@x stuff and child health. I can understand that you don't want to put that info out there or else some nut is going to call CPS on you;) Y'all two seemed to be genuine friends. Jealous :)

I don’t got though the drive thru…because my van window doesn’t roll down. 😄 really though, McDonalds will give me migraines and Chick-fil-a makes my stomach ache, but that Chick-fil-a chocolate milk shake and also their lemonade? UNDERATED!! Just bought Emily’s book on Audible!

Ok, dear crunchy community, I am a bit older, and back then, the fact that Asian women seemed to experience way less adverse symptoms, going through meno pause, was attributed to the fact that they ear lots of soy, in tofu etc. So, I thought it was good for us...?! 🤷 Anyway, I am not really looking for answers here, I will google this, of course, but just add to the fact, thatvthere is so much information out there, and seems to contradict, so - I loved this conversation above ...
