Shifter rebuild on the FLOODED '65 Chevrolet Corvair: Smooooth shifting!

The shifter on our FLOODED 1965 Chevrolet Corvair was super hard to shift and made driving the car challenging at best. After years of being exposed to the elements, the paper liner finally gave up and the shift tube was full of muddy/rusty paper. So on this episode, we're removing the shift tube, cleaning up the existing shifter rod, and installing a new bronze bushing kit from Clark's Corvair. This should make the shifter smooth as silk and get us one step closer to this being a daily driver.
Thanks so much for following along as we work to bring this classic back to life.

you should replace the oil seal at the transmission where the shift rod attaches. This is a common leak point for these cars.

Now that the engine is coming out, I'll have a reason to change it

It's a solid seal trying to replace one can't find a video .

I assume you also greased that shaft especially where it rides on those bearings. That would also help stop more rust. Good video. Thanks for sharing

So similar to old VWs; except on VWs it’s one plastic $4 bushing.

HI Sean Just found your videos. Awesome. I have rebuilt, gutted and fully restored several Corvair's from scratch. Been there, done that as they say. Your on target, keep going. All is good so far. Enjoying your trials and travels.

So whils doing this mod. did you also consider improving the clutch cable. Some rusted away and would break. A improvement was issued that involved a swivel to help with wear.
@AutoAnatomy
@AutoAnatomy Год назад
I actually just replaced the clutch cable a few weeks ago. Didn't do an upgraded design, just a stock replacement.

Thanks for this great video. I have a 63 convertible that needs this done to it. Do you have the part number from Clark's??

Hmm, I don't know if Clark's makes a bronze bushing kit but here is the link to their online catalog for early car shifter parts: ssl.corvair.com/user-cgi/catalog.cgi?show_page=115

Hi Sean, watching your videos has helped me to fix up my 1966 Monza 4 door hardtop...I've done tons of upgrades and repairs to where .y car is a pleasure to drive on the highway at 65 mph...mine has factory A/C, 110 engine and Powerglide automatic transmission

Hi I watch all your shows I am ready to drop my 65 corvair motor and my manual transmission my question is can I leave the cross member in that has all the rod on it or doesn’t have to come out to thanks
@AutoAnatomy
@AutoAnatomy Год назад
Hi Andrew, you can leave the front cross member in place, there are (I think) three bolts that need to be removed that hold the transmission to that member.

LOL Did this same job on my 65 Corviar back in 1980.. The kit looks familiar, gotta love Clarks Corviar Parts. If I remember correctly the paper was actually oily, but that was long ago and either my memory of it it was wrong or over time with that water intrusion washed it out. I do remember greasing up the shift rod to prevent future corrosion. This was in New Jersey with rain and snow with salting roads, had to replace several Corviar floors that was rotted our.

Did you replace the shifter shaft seal when you had the shifter off?

Yes

This is reminiscent of the torque tube bushing on my 54 1/2 1/2 ton from Chevy Duty. Differential got re geared to 3.58 making highway travel much quieter. You have more parts to add to finish that shifter, but good work.

Did you replace the coupler as well? There’s a pin in it that wears and makes shifting imprecise.

It has been about 40 years since I last did this procedure, but I remember it well. I also took the opportunity to put a thin coat of synthetic grease on the inner tube before I assembled it, for corrosion protection. I have also assisted others in this process. On at least one occasion, we had to use a torch to burn loose the packed paper liner in order to get it out! GOOD JOB!

Hello Sean, another great video! It sure makes a heck of a difference for sure. Were you able to replace the rubber on that stabilizing shaft? Also, I see a bellows around the shift tube? It did not look like it was doing anything to protect? Thanks for showing this. George B. in Michigan
@AutoAnatomy
@AutoAnatomy 2 года назад
Hi George, I didn’t have any bushings to replace those on the shaft, but they were surprisingly intact. The bellows is shot, and I need to replace it.

It seem that the engineers put much thought into the design of the shifter.

Cheap shot. I's not supposed to be exposed to water. WTF, put the pan and seals on to keep moisture from getting in.GM Engineers did a fine job back then designing a wonderful system in which they had limited experience in.

I was surprised you drilled even through the bronze bushing. Created burs on the break through. Stainless screws used? I assume you cleaned up the floor plate and maybe some new corrosion resistant nuts used.
