The first film in this series came during a stop in Maine a few short weeks ago. I am following it up with another as there was, and is, much to learn about the world these days. Might be photography-related, might be van-related, might be country related or even me-related. Never know what you are going to get. Like Forrest said, "Life is like a box of chocolates." I remind you in this film but it begs to remind again. I am not "Mr. Together." I am just making observations and sharing what I know.

Daniel, from 2:00 minutes in to roughly 9:00 minutes is the best most concise description of our country that I have ever heard. I've shared this with people that I know for them to hear the message. Very well said!

Somehow I missed this... I want to echo and shout louder your "Coastal Elite" rant. It is a 1000% true. I work for a super large Fortune 20 company and I say constantly "this will work in I-95 corridor or the LA Metroplex or Dallas...but what about the rest of real America?"...I do not live in the I-95 corridor but travel into for these meetings, so these corporate leaders then stare at me since they just 'fly-over' all of these places. They have no idea that people actual drink black coffee out of a Mr Coffee maker from 1982. Like steak and potatoes. You are so right real people and cool people live there and have a unique culture. Listen and understand!!!! Bravo to you for saying it!!!!

That is hilarious. Mr. Coffee and drip weakness. One of the things I will go to grave trying to do, bring good coffee and tea to the masses! I just had this conversation again today with someone who said the "red state" thing and I said "I lived in that state for 25 years and it's far from all red." We just have to get smarter, turn off the tech and start talking to one another, not yelling.

How clean the van is = peoples' perception of your choices - 1000%. When I was cruising up and down the coast of WA I'd pull up next to some crusty hippy types which only made my gleaming OCD rolling palace look all the more respectable. The locals would treat us both _very_ differently. I'd get invited to peoples' homes for dinner or "you must go and see such and such a place". People would get really, really keen on sharing their favourite spots and making recommendations and just having a real conversation. The hippies would get awkward glances and, more often than not, completely ignored. Even though we've made exactly the same life choice.

I always enjoy the quiet and very sparsely populated areas of states often. Sometimes its the long unbroken vistas or the quaint little rural towns. But then you come across a town that has a ton of stories to tell. One case for me was Condon Oregon. The area used to be surrounded by miles of huge wheat fields and such and because of this they had a beautiful town with a huge middle and high school. But sadly the year i went through their senior class had only 6 students! My point is if you live in a populated state i recommend searching out the two least populated counties and take a road trip. One can almost be guaranteed to find some interesting stories and places to research late.
@DANIELMILNOR505
@DANIELMILNOR505 3 года назад
And talking to people in those towns can help you understand how the other half lives. Their interpretation of you is probably off and yours of them might be as well. Then you both depart knowing more.

Interesting observations. There's a book from the 1970s titled, "The 9 Nations of North America" that talks about the regional differences among the states (the Desert SW, The Breadbasket, etc.). It was an interesting read and I recommend it. I used to fish with my dad, who loved fly fishing with his best friend. They went all over. When my dad died, I got all his gear...and have never used it. It's sad, really. I found that as much I liked to think of myself as an outdoorsman, I am really a city dweller.

I really want to get back to NM. I had a crazy experience driving through in 2012, on my way to LA for an internship. I was passing through Oklahoma and that little piece of Texas that sticks up. There was this strange hybrid thunder and dust storm. Everywhere was brown. I remember it being very flat. I remember Oklahoma being like what I thought Texas was supposed to be like, and the north of Texas being like what I though Kansas was supposed to be like. As I drove through this flat brown hinterland, a blue sliver emerged as I got close to the NM border. The terrain suddenly changed, along with the weather. When I crossed the border I was leaning forward trying to look up at the sky through my windshield, because it seemed like the storm literally stopped right at the border. Suddenly it was blue sky and beautiful snow-capped mountains in the distance. I had a nice hatch-chile filled overnight with a friend in Albuquerque and then it was back to the road.

In the UK a caravan is what you call a trailer. What you call a van, we call a campervan. A van over here is what tradesmen drive for their business, builders, delivery guys, whatever. Unless it's a stealth camper, which looks like every other van except on the inside, where degrees of fabulousness can be found. Our version of coastal and flyover states is somewhere's and nowhere's. Personally, I'm more likely to fly to Alabama or Wyoming than New York or LA. If I wanted impatient narcissists, lost tourists and shops selling overpriced trinkets it's much easier to visit London. Photography-wise most greats had done their stuff by the age of 40. Tony Ray-Jones produced some of the best social commentary photographs ever taken in a couple of years and died age 31.

Sometimes the brightest among us burn with a white-hot flame that just doesn't last long. we have RV's, most enormous white boxes with push out sides, vans and campers then a full range of modified Mad Max style rigs that defy logic and good design but are out there duking it out on the roadways. I'm a middle parts guy too. No jellied eels here however.
@BradleyHansonPhotography

Also, agreed re your red/blue assessment. In the fall of 2020, I drove 8400 from Minneapolis to Washington to shoot a wedding, then all the way back to the east coast for a wedding in Concord, NH, then all the way back to Minneapolis. I have now been to all 50 states (and all over the world). To generalize, most cities lean liberal and most rural areas are lean conservative. The myth that the coasts are more liberal is based only on NY and LA. I lived in Seattle for 13 years. Seattle, like Portland and Vancouver BC, is nice and liberal, but go 45 minutes outside of the city and it's no different from Idaho. Tons of midwest cities are just as "liberal" as any "coastal" cities. Minneapolis, St Paul, Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago, Cleveland, Des Moines, etc. That side, I met tons of wonderful people along the way, and had no idea where they fall in terms of political labels, and that's how it should be. We do need to listen to each other or we are fucked.

yes, the red state, blue state thing was the dumbing down of the nation to help divide us. And it work wonderfully. Our education system, regardless of state, unless you talk private, is hurting in a major way. The result is Trump, the Post Truth world and internal insurrection.

@@DANIELMILNOR505 there are two things that stood out in my mind after doing some extra extensive travel over the past 5 years. The first thing that is really obvious, there are way too many people. Little pockets of well to do people scattered amongst various shades of poverty or middle class struggle.

18:40 The energy could be coming from a coal-powered power plant but power plants are very efficient @ 90%+ in terms of power production compared to an internal combustion engine. Most internal combustion engines only get 50% of the power from the combustion to the wheels. a lot is given off as heat and gas out the exhaust.
