My version of a "tutorial" Just showing and trying to explain how I shift a 13 speed. I weighed about 77,000lbs during this. I'm really sorry about the audio!! P.S., Yes I wear ankle socks, and yes, my legs are sexy.
+Delvon Hall You gotta be kidding. Where in hell did you get a licence? Overdrive is a mystery? Here, give you a lesson.. Pan the throttle. Switch the red button ahead and let your foot off the throttle. Wait or it to catch and pan throttle again. Undo it by slowing down the engine, put the red button rearward and give it a bit of juice. It will engage. These are only half gears so about 200 rpm will do it either way.
It's still amazing this is all done without the clutch up-shifting past dead start as well as down-shifting by double "clutching" without using the clutch. That clutch really only starts to engage at the upper end of the pedal travel. Great video Matt - thanks! Stop and go traffic must suck!
I've been driving a truck in the oilfield for 3 years now and I know my 10-speed like the back of my hand. But I have the opportunity to drive a 13-speed quite a few times. I prefer a 13 over a 10 any day. Float them gears all day, every day!
@1776Filmz I'm confused.. don't you have to use the clutch between the gears? Trucks seems to be ALOT different from over here in Europe. Please enlighten me! ;)
Fuck yea this is exactly what I needed! I’m starting my new job tomorrow god willing and this is gold for me! I know how to drive a 10 speed but I was worried about this 13 speed that I’ll be driving and I have to say after watching this video! 13 speed is nothing! Thanks man! I can literally say that cause of this video I know how to drive 13 speed transmission!
Only time you need to use the clutch is when your starting and stopping if your good enough. It takes practice at first but after you learn you only use it for those two things.
Yo the guy is showing how to drive if you want to be a princess and use the clutch every time go ahead he knows he's truck he knows what it can handle....you kill joy lol
I think the whole preselecting is done to avoid panic while shifting as you see a lot of these driver now a days panicing while having to shift or climb a hill......member the 15 speeds...never preselect now wonder there are automatics.
+Ross wilson I think you don't know. Preselecting just before the shift saves the transmission from strain. I have driven 15 speeds and the only shift you make is range. Which you ALWAYS preselect or it grinds like hell. OD isn't on a 15 speed. The blue switch if for way down low.
You do what you gotta do, man. It happens sometimes. In the event of a sudden stop, hit the service brake, push the clutch (just enough to disengage not all the way) and catch what gears you can on the way down. It takes practice. Downshifting is pretty much just the opposite of upshifting. Raise your rpms instead of letting them drop.. You'll get it over time. Gl
Thanks a shit-ton for this video bro. I've been driving 10 speeds for four years and I'm starting another gig on Monday morning that has all 13's. After watching your video a few times, I know feel confident enough to jump behind the wheel Monday morning and take off just as if I'm still in a 10. Thanks again bro!
Melvin Vega this comment in regards to the one about floating gears. They thought him how to but he doesn't want you to know about it is simple depending on how old is your truck most of them goes by rpms between 1200 to 1500 up to 1800 if not mistaken ,Rev up rpms let of gas pedal change gears no clutch only when come to a stop for first gear or reverse . Any feedback appreciate it
Floating gears a way easier to do than double clutching and it's more relaxing and you don't have to look at the RPM tach to shift smoothly just listen to the motor when it starts to quite down then it's ready to shit
I’ve watched this video so many times since I started driving trucks 9 years ago, that when you start singing about changing gears @1:00, I start singing with you 😂😂🤣👌🏾💪🏾
I've spent the last few hours looking at instructional videos online and other than not wanting to call the gears by the number on the shifter and your little break out into song, this is the best video I've seen so far. Camera under the seat is genius. I hope you still get these posts and that you know how helpful you are being to people.
A Roadranger 13 speed does not have the same bearings in the splitter that the 18 speed does. You stand a good chance of burning out the overdrive splitter if you drive a 13 speed like an 18 speed by splitting the low range gears.
I think is a really good video. I think it will be a good idea to do what you did, record changing the gears and pedals... and maybe adding a third camera to see the dash board... so ppl are going to be able to see speed and rpm while changing gears. But again, really good video.
RPM shifting is different on all trucks ,there are too many variables but most of the trucks keep the power band from 1200 to 1500 then it begins to drop. if you have ever been in a century or coronado you can notice the tach gauge has green to yellow .green is peak power and is where you should shift and yellow is where torque begins to drop, so if you rev your engine to high your just wasting fuel.
""I ABSOLUTELY LOVE EATON-FULLER 13-SPEEDS AND EATON-FULLER 18-SPEEDS, ""I LOVE THEPOWER AND THESTRONG REARENDS FOR MOUNTAIN-DRIVING""!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video man! I like the video overlay showing the footwork as well at the same time. I'll be sending viewers your way from my channel to watch and learn! Well done!
American truck clutches must last forever. You made it look so easy. Most euro drivers dont know what a stick is nowadays let alone how to change what we would call a crash box. You got skills fella !
""I JUST GO UP TO 12TH-GEAR BECAUSE I DO NOTNEED A TICKET BASED ON A MOVING-VIOLATION, ""ESPECIALLY FOR A TRUCK THAT DOESN'T HAVE A GOVERNOR-DEVICE""!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess most drivers don't haul quads or 5 leggers! Cuz I always use low, but mind you I m hauling upwards 150k gross heavy. Mind even at 80 k gross I still use low to let her take off , then start grabbin! Bob tailing, well that's another story
in response to @XGiveMeLibertyX......I've been driving for around 2 yrs now. with about 9-10 months of that being OTR. Right out of the gate, my first driver trainer taught me how to float gears with a 10 speed transmission. It was aggravating at first but once I learned the secret (which I'm not telling) of it, that was it for me. I was hooked. Granted, there are mass amounts of newer trucks coming standard with automated 12 speeds now (no more shifting) you'll still have to learn how drive the standard 10 speed. Even my company (NFI) has new cabs with autos. Floating has been around for years and is not going anywhere, the people who ruin the transmissions are those who more than likely don't need to be behind the wheel of one of these things. Even 6-speed straight trucks can be floated. The name of the game is rev matching. Which you're taught in school. Once you learn to float and get that down, YOU WILL NEVER USE THAT CLUTCH AGAIN. I promise you that. Eaton will say what a company would say to save face. Chances are very good they do that in a way to cover their own ass. (FYI Eaton transmissions float better than most others). Not to mention it saves the life of the clutch itself over time. Good luck to you in your driving career, and be careful on the road.
No disrespect but your not telling lmao because your Mr.badass of the highway and nobody knows your secret. Like if I said i'm not telling anybody the number one company that runs more miles. Sorry you sound ridiculous
Edwin Garcia who are you again? i sound experienced. I'm guessing you're a new driver that focuses on the negatives of driving vs. just getting out there and getting experience and just learning the road.
Yea I don't have experienced, I focus on receiving extensive training and applying all the knowledge I need to be taught, then getting out on the road and do my thing. Also, doing a lot of research on companies.
so then maybe when tryna come at someone WITH experience who more than likely would train YOU at one of your potential future employers......you'd LISTEN instead of argue. good luck with your future driving career. hopefully you'll have open ears.
I do have open ears but real talk I ain't with people who got "secrets" and ish i'm straight forward here it is and this is how it is, i'll listen to people but not the " I got secret" parts.. naw
I gotta ask because some dude said always start from 1 thats how he runs his truck i told him hes being very picky and wont find a driver. He says thats the "proper' way and said with a load to never start with 2 even when empty. But i always start with 2 especially when empty is that bad?
It seems like no one that's been doing this for a while uses the clutch after the initial launch. I don't think they want me floating gears in school. It definitely seems easier than double clutching.
im sitting here smoking a bowl and i choked laughing hi ho hi ho hi hoo LOL ive been driving stick since i was 14 and i STILL dont get this Hi-Low / splitting business i'd probably need a day or two to understand it
No you don't have to use the clutch to shift but its use is recommended. When shifting unsynchronized transmissions, you have to match the road speed and transmission speed, otherwise you'll grind. Clutch discs are wear items, meaning they are meant to wear out over time, and they are checked and adjusted or replaced at certain PM intervals. Transmissions are not considered wear items. Between the two, clutch disc's are much cheaper to replace than a transmission.
