We had a Lhasa Apso when we were kids. She was super protective and possessive of my sister who was a 2 year old toddler at the time. Even though our dog looked like the most adorable cuddly fluffy teddy bear, she was one ferocious guard dog. She would play with us during the day and nap with us, but come night time, she would guard our front door like a brave little lioness that she was. We had her for 14 years and she was the most wonderful, brave, loving dog in the world.
I cannot agree more dear I recently February of 2023 lost my darling LLXP of 16 years -Cherie What a champion and a soul who is forever in my heart .. luckily and blessed am I I now have a rescue poodle x Lhaso sweet girl who is growing in confidence and trust of me She is zooming and living safely in love
One walk a day is not enough for most Lhasa Apsos. They are quite sturdy dogs and can jump and run very well. My Bonnie gets 3 walks a day, a short 20 minutes round in the morning, at least 1 hour walk with free running after lunch and 30 minutes in the evening. She loves rain and snow and jumps in every water or mud hole she can find. So, in my opinion, the Lhasa Apso is not a typical lap dog, although they can be sweet and cuddly sometimes - but they are stubborn and proud little dogs. I like it that she has her own little personality, she is very sensitive and does not obey to harsh or loud commands but can be guided quite well by positive reinforcement. Praise often works better than treats. She is a good watch dog but stops barking when I tell her that erverything is ok. Best dog ever but not easy for first dog owners. A Shi Tzu is probably a better choice if you want a typical lap dog.
I've had both and they're both good dogs. My Shih Tzu was a rescue so it was a matter of retraining bad behavior. She was a sweet girl with lots of anxiety. I'm getting a new puppy next week, will be a little male Shih Tzu. I haven't had a puppy in a long time, this will be fun!
I have a Shih Tzu male he is smart he's almost human he watch what you do . Like for instance I will turn floor fan so I can get air while relaxing by the time I get comfortable I don't have air because now my shih Tzu have turned the air on him.
I just LOVE this dog breed mix! We just bought another after our first one passed away. We had her for 17 years! They are so loving, playful, silly and fun! They love to play but snuggle up to you when they are tired! So cute! So highly recommended as a single or family pet!!🐾🐾♥️♥️🐾🐾♥️♥️

Lhasa Aspo all the way. we've had big to small dogs my whole life and the personality of the Lhasa Apso hands down blew me away. she was my best friend went "EVERYWHERE" with me. So well behaved and barked only when someone came in the house or if she was happy and wanted to talk. She was a little tank and stocky build, bigger than the Shih Tzu; I preferred that especially with play so I didn't have to worry she was overly small and fragile. Never had problems with her except as she aged, she kinda got more cranky and stubborn but never bit or hurt anything or anyone. Even when I introduced a family of kittens when she was 12 she took to them no problem. I would agree with the video that sometimes she didn't like to have other dogs in her home so she would growl more so to say don't try and play with me, but I think that was because it was just me and her for so long. I think Lhasa Apsos would be just fine if they were brought into a home with a dog already established as the Alpha. She was also super loving and patient even with kids and babies, never bit or growled to anyone. the vet even had her chart mentioning that she was "friendly". I miss her little personality fun loving happy carefree bubbly loyal little girl every day. I would highly recommend, just know they are independent and can be stubborn at times but super intelligent and trainable with patience. I don't mind that about the breed. I would absolutely get another one again.
Lhasa Apso by a mile! This video has some interesting but not necessarily accurate information particular about Lhasa’s personality, they are the most loving, loyal and affectionate doggies ever! Comes down to training and socialisation as puppies. Also you forgot the mention the Shih Tzu’s have a short snout and rounded more bulging eyes which can cause some health problems that Lhasa’s do not have. Nice video none the less. 😊

Yes I love BOTH 😍 but I owned a Llassa Also and he was wonderful... Independent - Not a lot of walking - hard to toilet train at 1st... But I would have a Llassa again...
i have a Lhasa Apso puppy only 11 months old! 🥰his birthday is coming up this February the 20th! he is a perfect guard dog! he barks at anyone who knocks or comes inside the house.🥰 even tho he is small he is still a very vicious dog.
I have 2 shih tzus. One standard and one emperial. I love their sweet happy friendly personality. I also love their ability to sense moods and energy and they adjust to uou as a owner. ❤❤
Shih Tzu ii hands down the BEST! Yes they're a little stubborn, require patience, & are notorious for being a bit more challenging to house break. Patience is the key & the unconditional love they give, the amazing welcoming & friendly nature towards other people & animals by far outweighs any challenges in training. I had both dogs and I used to run with them when I was training for naval recruit school. I had to stop because the vet said the lhasa apso was getting to big and muscly and the shih tzu had lost to much body weight. So I borrowed the neighbours rottweiler lol.

I have an Apso Tzu cross. His personality is more Apso and definitely not a lap dog which is disappointing but love him anyway. Definitely have to make sure he knows that I am the leader and not him or your in for a tough time. 😊
I think I have a mix! He has the build of the Lhasa apso - sturdy and a bit stocky. But is a solid liver color/chocolate brown. His papers said he was a shih tzu, his build is way too big! He also is very very protective of our house when newcomers ring the bell, but then will warm up once he’s had an introduction.
I had a Lhasa and he was a great dog. Never barked unless someone knocked on the door but soon as it was opened he was all over them wanting to be petted. He loved people. He might have been a good watch/warning dog but would have welcomed the intruder once inside. If he got the chance to bolt out the door he would run as fast as a bullet and there was no catching up to him, at least not me. Lol and I was pretty fast.
Both are equally good breeds. Friendly…cute and easy for to maintain. They are extremely playful and good with kids. Cute adorable bundles of joy to lighten up your home.
We have a Lhasa apso her name is Coco and she just went to check the door front I think she heard some noise 😂 and it's true positive reinforcement works better if you yell at her she yells back at you ten times more 😂
I was lightly scolding my parent's Lhasa, Morgan, for peeing on the carpet once while pet sitting. She yelled back and gave me the silent treatment for hours after.
I've had 4 different shih tzu. They tend to be picky eaters. It depends though. My girl likes strictly meat. She doesn't like vegi mixed food. She prefers filet migion over regular beef. My boy dogs are less picky but I still have to switch up sometimes. They'll love a certain brand of food for awhile but I switch up to give them a variety. Make sure you buy the small bites with hard food and always mix hard food with soft food. Cesar, science diet, pedigree are good brands.
Love my Lhasa!!! Sweetest dog. Loves to just be with me and all people really. Does fine alone too when needed, not much exercise required but loves short walks, only barks when the doorbell rings. Requires grooming but no shedding, and otherwise great personality and easy going. Not much in the intelligence area. I tell my Hanna she has just one brain cell, but it’s a cute one! Best dog ever!!!
I have both! They’re the best! My Lhasa apso, eats very little. But, he’s bigger. He’s super friendly. My Shih Tzu is grouchy, but so sweet!!! She eats a lot. I love them so much.
at my house we use to have 4 shitzu, i think they kinda get attach to their owners and get the owner personality because mine was just like me, like she was a clone of me in dog form, sadly mine die 2 month ago, she was 15yrs old, she was blind, had a heart problem....well she had A LOT of problems and i think is was due to the fact that she was from a puppy milk(Note i didnt bought her my aunt did and then couldn'ttake care of her, kinda abandon her and then give her to me) but i love her with all my heart....im kinda lost without her but im trying anyway shitzu are a great dogs and im thinking of getting another but it is too soon for me

I've had both and they are polar opposites personality wise. Both are very stubborn and very sensitive personality wise and Lhasas are very yappy. They are great dogs though!
My Lhasa apso is the best dog. She is the sweetest but totally a guard dog. She has come a long way with meeting new humans but if you let her come to you, she will beg you to pet her.

First of all, DO NOT SHAVE your Shih Tzu completely, it increases the risk of sunburn and other skin problems. But you can definitely trim their hair and give them a new fresh hair cut. Yes it will grow back. And if possible don't mess with the inner coat.

In AZ Groomers and Owners shave down their Shih Tzu in the hot summer months. Use a 7 Blade on top and a 10 Blade on the underside, pads, face, etc. Watch Shih Tzu Puppy Cut videos on YT. Also, If you have to shave down your Shih Tzu during Winter bc of matting make sure you have Dog Sweaters, Coats and Pajamas and Blankets for them. I leave my Shih Tzu coat longer in Winter and she still has Pajamas, Coats and Blankets to wear and use as needed.
Same! I bought a dog with CKC papers and it say shih tzu. She is my third shih tzu and she look so different. She has smaller almond shaped eyes, bigger with longer and taller body, longer face and broad forehead. I’m so confused! I love her anyway tho and I’m happy she came into my life.
@ 2:22 just as you would never call an english bulldog as just english or a golden retriever as just golden, it is wrong to call a lhasa apso as lhasa. the lhasa apso is usually referred to as just apso by tibetans if you want to shorten the name.
Lhasas takes more time to befriend with strangers..Shih Tzus are more amiable.. Shih Tzus are also a tad bit smaller and lighter than Lhasas and lahsas have bigger moustache.. That's it! After all Shih Tzu is a cross breed of Lhasa! Do you want a dog that barks at strangers and is aware of strangers or do you want more sociable dogs? It comes down to it..Many prefer the former and many prefer the later.. It depends on what you want from your dog..
