I think that many people are still misunderstanding the meaning of Kata and especially Bunkai ... I've been told many times that Bunkai DOESN'T represent a "real application for real street fighting/self defence situation" ... Anyway it is essential for the purpose of acquiring those automatisms that allow you to act naturally, without thinking, in a real combat situation. Needless to learn pre-established schemes, since the real situation will never be identical to that of the exercise in the dojo. What matters is to assimilate the principles, so that the techniques are natural and adapt to the circumstances. Of course all this require a very long time of study , practice and training ... But this is the traditional method ... there are probably other valid methods, but the traditional one is like that.
1.He shows all techniques on the much smaller guy. 2.Nobody would attack you with oi-zuki, as well as an attacker would not leave his hand without moving it back. 3.People usualy use different punches and not only straight ones, why not to show some moves against them?
every kata has many bunkai, this is okasaki shihan showing us few so that we learn something. he is demonstrating on ishijima shihan who is world kata champion, very strong guy who happens to be his favorite student and he is confident of his level. he can't just pick anyone from the crowd to explain the technique in seminar where the time is very limited. he is not teaching how to defend yourself in a street fight, it is breaking down or interpreting of the geksai sho kata and the participants are expected to practice these and demonstrate as well.
Ferry Dzaack Oh, okay. I thought it was a reference to Teriyuki Okazaki who is the head and founder of ISKF (International Shotokan Karate Federation).
I don't believe that is Hiro Okazaki. He is much shorter and just doesn't look like that. I have trained with Shihan Okazaki and his uncle, Master Okazaki, before.
This guy has beautiful movement but his bunkai are very average. Every attack is pre-arranged. He tells the guy what to throw at him. So unrealistic. I'd like to see his movement against whatever the opponent chooses to do himself while disguising it and really trying to hit him
