What was the battle of Shiloh?
Why is Shiloh so important?
The battle of Shiloh or Pittsburg Landing is a critical battle in the Western Theater of the American Civil War.
April, 1862. Ulysses S. Grant advances to Savannah, Tennessee. The Army of the Tennessee unloads up the Tennessee River at Pittsburg Landing, near a Methodist church called Shiloh. Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio is approaching to rendezvous with Grant.
Meanwhile, Albert Sidney Johnston and Pierre Beauregard are rejoining the Confederate armies of the west at Corinth, Mississippi. Johnston plans to hit Grant before Buell meets with him.
The Confederate advance is slowed by April rains. But on April 6, 1862, the Confederates are aligned just south of the Union lines near Shiloh church. Hardee, Bragg, Polk, and Breckinridge strike.
Sherman and Prentiss are at the front of the Union lines. They are driven back in the morning to the Hamburg-Purdy Road. The Confederates take Sherman and Prentiss' camps.
But Hurlbut, WHL Wallace, and McClernand move up to support Sherman and Prentiss. Grant arrives on the field. Sherman and McClernand are pushed back toward the Pittsburg Landing, but WHL Wallace, Prentiss, and Hurlbut hold the Sunken Road, which becomes known as the "Hornet's Nest."
Bragg and Breckinridge strike the Hornet's Nest. Hurlbut is thrown out of the Peach Orchard, but Albert Sidney Johnston is killed. But the rebels train cannon on the road. Then WHL Wallace is wounded. Hurlbut and WHL Wallace pull out. Prentiss remains, and he holds the Hornet's Nest until he is surrounded. 2,200 Union soldiers are trapped at the Sunken Road and become captured.
Night falls. Just about 120 miles from the Shiloh battlefield, the ironclads Carondelet and Pittsburg have passed through the defenses at Island Number (No.) 10 on the Mississippi River.
Buell arrives in the night at Savannah. His men steam down to the Union front near Pittsburg Landing. The next morning, Grant and Buell plan a counterattack. The timberclads, the Tyler and the Lexington, arrive on the Tennessee River and hold back a Confederate drive by Chalmers and Jackson near the landing. Lew Wallace arrives from Crump's Landing, and reforms the Union right wing.
On the morning of April 7, Buell and Grant hit back. The Confederates are pushed back down the battlefield. Fighting restarts between Buell's divisions under Crittenden and Nelson near the Sunken Road. Chalmers attacks. But the Union line drives them back.
McClernand and McCook come down the center, retaking McClernand's old camps. Sherman is now near his Shiloh camps.
Beauregard knows he cannot hold. Breckinridge is put in line to form a cover. Hardee, Polk, and Bragg pull back down the road to Corinth. The Battle of Shiloh is over.
Both sides lose over 10,000 men in the worst battle in North America up to that point. The next day, General Pope and the ironclads take Island No. 10, and the Union advance in the west progresses.
This film was made by Jeffrey Meyer, historian and research librarian, Iowa.

One of the best battlefield videos that I have seen. Laying out the geography, with streams, roads and features help in understanding the ground, and why the CSA ended up in clockwise rotation instead of a counter-clockwise rotation away from Pittsburg Landing trapping the Union against Owl Creek. The Battlefield Trust has made some recent videos that also show why the ground dictated the CSA deployment instead of Beauregard’s original battle plan. I especially appreciate the zooming in and out for context. I am now a fan, keep up the great work.

Excellent presentation. Having visited this battlefield on several occasions, this is best explanation of a very complex battle. To those haven't been there, this is, or was until the mid 90s, the best preserved major battlefield of the Civil War. When walking the trails and following the audio guides, there is no visible modern intrusion, no power lines, highways or even paved roads, buildings or other, distracting, modern crap. The absence of those distractions allows us to fully focus on and appreciate the magnitude of the struggle. lf this presentation could be incorporated into the battlefield guides, it would be a perfect complement to an in-person visit.

Visited TN in the fall of 2016. Went to see B Pussers home and J D Distillery. Went by this place. Had the afternoon to kill figuring it would be boring. Hands down the most interesting place I've ever visited. Never was to a Battlefield before. It was Fall. Very quiet. Few people. The Monuments were unbelievable. The info signs were all over. I learned so much.

Thank you for this brilliant summary. As a Boy Scout in the 1970’s I spent days and nights at the battlefield, not knowing at that time that my great, great, great grandfather had been a casualty there. He absorbed a rebel bullet, returned to his Kentucky home, and died the following April. He died from the war, not at the battle. This is a beautiful summary of (at the time) America’s greatest tragedy. Thank you for creating, summarizing, and sharing.

After deep diving on the battle of Shiloh the past few days, this is the best video I've seen. It does the best at orienting me where everyone is, and the significance behind their locations. Most "battle maps" even the good, animated ones can still look like a cluster of 1-side vs the other with no real sense of scale. Great job.

I’ve been to the battlefield a few times. I’ve also slept in the house that was Grant’s headquarters following the battle while the army recovered. It was owned by my aunt and her new husband. The diary of the woman who owned it at the time is on display in the parlor, and they gave tours in the spring. The original dining table was there with Grant’s cigar burns, and the nicks from Sherman’s sword are still on the banister of the stairs. He beat on the banister with his sword to piss off the owner. It’s all in the diary.

Absolutely outstanding presentation. You have a new subscriber. Up until Shiloh, both sides and their civilian populations had not fully grasped that the war was going to be one of huge armies taking the field, wielding thousands of troops firing rifled weapons with high caliber low muzzle velocity mini balls that created gaping wounds and shattered bones, along with massed artillery sending grapeshot and cannonballs at close range. There wouldn't be just one decisive Waterloo. There would be multiple non-decisive Waterloos -- Shiloh the first, then Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, the March to the Sea. Shiloh was a shock. But the shocks continued as the maimed and the wounded and the dead mounted and mounted and mounted over multi-day battles as the lines ebbed and flowed from attack to retreat to attack and again and again. Remember the conversation between Grant and Sherman after the first day of Shiloh? "Well, Grant, we've had the devil to pay." Grant's reply? "We'll lick 'em tomorrow." The tomorrows looked like they would never end.

Wonder Where 5th Company Washington Artillery Was @@JeffreytheLibrarian

Great video. Unless you have walked the ground, it is hard to appreciate how difficult a place it was to fight between the woods and swales separating the occasional bigger farm fields. So completely different from Eastern battlefields. My great, great grandfather fought in the 6th Iowa which was the end of the Union right on the first day. I found a place in the woods where they held for over three hours in mid afternoon. There is a confederate burial trench in front of their position and a regimental burial trench behind (Union soldiers were later moved to the national cemetery) less than 100 feet apart. They were then moved in the late afternoon to support the guns at Pittsburgh Landing. After the first day they were so decimated that they did not fight as a unified commend but were parceled out to support other units. I have read his letters and he never wrote directly about the battle. But he did revisit it in the 1880s. Must have had a profound impact. He fought all the way through to Atlanta where he was either wounded or became very sick. Shiloh appears to be the only battlefield he revisited after the war.

My great great grandfather was in this battle for the Union. He was in the 59th OVI company H, Theodore C. Altman along with his brother my great great uncle Jacob Altman. Day 2 my great great grandfather was wounded in the hip and his brother my great great uncle, KIA. Somewhere in the general vicinity of the Bloody Pond

@Jeffery the Librarian ....I'd love to see the battle of Chickamauga. Second bloodiest battle, Shiloh in reverse, it's never talked about.

Yes, I will get to Chickamauga. I was actually just looking at a map of it, and you're right, it's Shiloh II.

As a descendant of one who fought and survived this intense engagement, I say, “Excellent!” My one question with Grant’s battle plan is, “Why did he not send the fresher forces in day two’s reinforcements after the tired, retreating Confederates?”

Yes, I will get to these other conflicts. They may be summer projects when my regular work is lighter, because world war battles are HUGE.

I just found your channel and I subscribed. I love the detail on this and your other videos. One suggestion, as I am a filthy casual who doesn't know that much about these battles. Any way you can put a overview map in the upper right corner? Kind of like how TotalWar games do? I know you regularly say "we will now zoom out..." "we will no zoom in..." but an overview context will help.

Confederate strategy had been to defend all key points and this resulted in many forces dispersed in small garrisons that were idle. Johnston had to convince Jefferson Davis that a concentration of all these idle forces was needed to strike a blow at Grant's army before it was united with Buell's army. The government finally realized it had no alternative. Credit to the Confederacy for achieving the concentration it did but the troops it missed most was the corps captured at Ft. Donelson which was needed at noon on the first day at Shiloh to have pushed the attack home against the Union left.

It's very important to remember when you read about civil war battles that essentially every battle fought where in both sides absorbed heavy casualties should be counted as a union victory for obvious reasons. Even if the Union army was routed if the Confederates suffered anything close to Union casualty levels the Confederates had lost.
@JeffreytheLibrarian
@JeffreytheLibrarian 2 года назад
This is a very good point. I think this is why Lee wanted to get a victory in the north. He knew the arithmetic was not good. The south could only win if the north lost the political will to keep it going.
