In case anyone else gets bricked by EW-W111 firmware upgrade: 1. Unplug everything (battery, front and rear mechs, junction and EW-W111) 2. Wait a minute. 3. Plug in the EW-W111 bottom only (not the top junction side) 4. Plug in the battery 5. Connect with ETube app 6. This will update your EW-W111 firmware several times. 7. Once done updating 8. Disconnect app 9. Plug everything back in 10. Reconnect App 11. Happy Days
Bricked my bike, I unplugged the battery and the module. (Also make sure charger is not plugged in). I then reconnected the battery, connected my computer. I then plugged in the wireless module and discovered my bike. The computer app found everything and saw the ew-wu111 needed an update, sent the update from PC and it worked. So far so good.... DON'T UPDATE VIA BLUETOOTH!
@@boostenmkiv It's interesting to see the new groupset war being Shimano vs SRAM. Poor Campy isn't even a contender. I also need to do more content on SRAM.... I just can't justify the price of it at the moment.
@@gplama Hey Shane, I saw your topics on those, but I think you promised a more indeph review. The truth is that it's quite impossible to do any update on Giant's power meter and I'm wondering if this is a general issue for all owners. Thanks.
Bertin Kwodjip There was a recent update to the RideLink app and the PowerPro2 seems to be able to update properly now. Giant clearly know more about these things than Shimano. 🤦🏼♂️
@@bernardlinde Hi Bernard Linde, I keep receiving GATT ERROR which seem to be related to the Bluetooth, but turning it on/off makes no difference. My power meter is showing version 236 with an available update version 238 which I just can't install. Any suggestion will be welcome. Thanks.
Hi Using the Shimano E Tube app, to fine tune my R9200 derailleurs. Took some fiddling to get the best performance, but noticed on the rear it needed an offset almost to end of range. That’s the trim adjust. Is that telling of a mechanical issue? This is a 2022 Canyon new out of the box. I also front the automatic set up of the front derailleur did not work great. After I did it as the app directed. the chain dragged on the lever fairly hard. I just when back and adjusted to knowing the way it needed to be trimmed to be happy. Very interesting but …
Tried to reindex the rear derailleur under “maintenance” tab but very confusing. It said to move the chain to the 5th down from the largest sprocket but you can’t do that electronically when you’re in setup mode. I had to manually push the derailleur across in step 1 and then hold it there while completing step 2 before logout. New indexing seems to work but there was a massive change in the index adjustment figure for an indexing that was pretty good before I started using the new E-Tube update. Did I do it correctly? Looking fwd to when you cover this in future vid
I tried to put ew-wu111 on my bike, but when synchronizing with the cell phone it says "an unknown master unit is connected check the master unit". do you know how i can solve it? my battery is SM-BTR2 (the battery box says it is compatible). thanks
I just happened to need to connect mine on 9/1 when it dropped and then got surprised with this new app. But then I forgot what passkey I set 🤦♂️, time to get the laptop out.
Help please.should my ewwu111 always be on? Whenever I open the etube app, the unit can be found without the di2 being woken up. Is this right? Or is this draining my battery?
Hello, how is the procedure to put a new key of the D-Fly in-wu111, since the default 000000 does not grab it and I do not know how to change the key, thanks
Any idea why not all cassettes are shown in the app? Even some produced by shimano are missing (11-32, 11-34...). It seems isn't possible to customise them either. 🤔 could it affect the functionality if I install a cassette not available in the app?
Thanks for the video, I noticed that you have set your rear derailleur for fast changing, what was the reason behind this? do you notice any difference from normal?
This changes the multi-shift interval: how quickly it goes through the gears when you press and hold a shift button. If I recall correctly a high interval requires a higher cadence.. mine is set to 'fast' too... because it makes sense to me. When I hold the button I want to move it down/up the cassette as quickly as possible.
I went over the the Better Shifting website you have linked and Terry got back to me right away. There is no way to manually update the chainring size, but in the end it does not matter. Here is a link to an article he wrote on his site. bettershifting.com/di2-synchronized-shifting-the-complete-guide/#cassetteisnotlisted
Hey Shane, sorry little off topic BUT does the new TCR you have fit on the original tacx neo? I’m looking at getting one but unsure about brake clearance. Cheers Baz.
are the shift buttons customisable for each shifting mode? e.g. if I want more of an E-Tap style left hand downshift / right hand upshift for synchro, but standard shift buttons for the manual mode
No issues updating firmware from either Android or iOS. However on Android I created a Shimano ID and can log on fine. With iOS if I go to the logon screen it just displays a mostly blank page with nowhere to type ID and password.
Hi There, can someone tell me- if I add the EW unit, can I then just connect to it with my Garmin or do I have to go through the e-tube app? Have only just got my DI2 bike and worried about bricking it. Thanks!
After this update my app keeps saying Bluetooth connection interrupted. I can’t connect etube app. Anyone else having this issue? Still connecting to my Garmin so I know the ANT+ is working.
@@justinmcdean9967 I've reached out to Shimano asking for access to the new gear given the popularity of my Shimano/Di2 content. No luck to date. On the other hand, SRAM are very helpful.
Have a look at the ratings in the App Store - 1 star average. It won’t get past the checking for E-TUBE projects page for me, but is seems I am lucky as it bricked many Di2 systems. Surely Shimano actually test this stuff?
Do you know if it's possible to change the standard cassettes in e-tube? I have an 11-32 cassette with the short cage derailler. You can't select this combination in e-tube as far as I know.
That's because it's not allowed by Shimano officially. The short cage will only be allowed to be used with up to an 11-30. If you want it to say 11-32, you need to buy the GS rear mech.
@@benschuttenbeld Just select whatever is closest. The RD-R8050-SS will run 11-32T easily, but you can't select it. Selecting a different cassette doesn't do _that_ much though.. it changes the displayed gear ratios in the synchro shift screen.. and that's about it. It doesn't change the way the bike shifts (though for some cassette / chain ring combinations Gear Position Control is enabled/disabled automatically).
Hi Shane! Ever since I upgraded the firmware of the EW-WU111 to the latest, v4.60, the wireless unit now always broadcasts connection mode which drains the battery far quicker than normal. In other words, I do not have to press the junction box button for 2 seconds to begin broadcasting connection mode so I can connect to the E-Tube app on my phone. Instead, as soon as I launch the app, the EW-WU111 always shows up when I tap the (+) button. I have confirmed that I configured the wireless unit to only broadcast in ANT+ mode and even tested to ensure that when switching from ANT+ to Bluetooth or Off, the wireless unit cannot connect to my Gamin head unit which only uses ANT+. However, as I learned from you, this configuration only affects the connection to head units, not the Bluetooth management connection mode which is now always broadcasting. Have you experienced the same or did I bodge the firmware upgrade? This is possible since I did it wirelessly with the E-Tube app which lost connection during the upgrade so had to follow BetterShifting's "How to recover from a failed Di2 Wireless firmware update" post for which I am grateful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
Something is up with that for sure. One for Shimano Support if you've done everything by the book and it's still broadcasting the BLE management connection.
Does using this latest version still brick the system every time you try and connect over BT? I'm scared to try it after numerous failed attempts on the older version.
@@gplama two bikes connected/updated and no bricked systems, what a result! Thanks for making the video, I wouldn't have bothered checking the app update otherwise.
@@iainhuddart8496 The charger plugs into the junction box of the Di2. Then either into USB power (for charging), or a PC to program/configure/etc it with the E-Tube Project software. The only phone link will be via BLE with the wireless module installed.
Silly question, is it possible to implement a shifting pattern more like SRAM Etap? I know I can set both left shift buttons to shift to smaller cogs, and both right shift buttons to shift to larger cogs, that is easy. But I was not seeing an option to do the "double push" from both sides for the front shifting.
LOL, thanks guys. Figured not, but good to know. I'm totally new to Di2. Followed Shane's info on the wireless upgrade and hit similar hiccups, but it's working well now. Even though the shifting pattern on the default is "the same" as the mechanical, my brain is constantly getting messed up on the shifting with the smaller "paddle" that does the cable pull to larger cogs/ring. Just need some time to get used to it. I am planning to test the synchro modes and see if those help. Sure neat to have all these options. Thanks for the info :D
@@Chader9 You can reprogram which button performs what shift. When mountain Di2 came out, people were 50/50 split on whether the shift paddles were "backward" or "correct". The configuration they ship with is the same as a mechanical pod shifter, but for some reason when it went electronic, it seemed 'backward' to me, so I switched it! When I switch my bike from road to TT, or my other bike from commute to touring, I completely reprogram my shifters. The TT because there's MORE shifters, the commute/tour because it goes from IGH to 2x11 and has more derailleurs.
@@Hansengineering Yeah, I am considering a swap for sure, especially since the changes are so easy in the app. I figure I should give the default a fair test first (only done a couple of rides), but I think I may try some alternate configs to see if I like them better.
Six zeros might get you in with the defaults. If that passkey doesn't work then try 123456. Failing that you'll need to use the E-Tube software on Windows to reset it.
How can I select the Shift Mode in the App..I’m gonna go crazyyyyy. Cause somehow i can’t do it with the old setup since I’ve installed the Bluetooth device. Hopefully somebody can help :D
Well the new 4.0.2 PC version of E-Tube is a joke and full of bugs, I missed my Sunday ride because my new GRX Di2 stopped working and battery went from 90% Saturday to almost flat and shifters etc not working! I could not work it out phoned Shimano about the problem and they had no ideas do use the new 4.0.2 and run it through the testing process! It came down to me talking with a customer who said here read this email. Well I have stopped using 4.0.2 PC version and back to 3.4.5 version and the Di2 is all good, so disappointing with Shimano support as I work in a bike shop.
@@gplama do you have any word on a fix coming? I'm so glad to find out about why my bike stopped working. Was about to sell of my new GRX groupset, 6only a week old and to replace it with the new Campag ¹x¹3groupsett.
@@overland_adventure_nz I've sent them a few emails, but nothing so far other than "We've sent this to the service department and they will investigate". The main problem is that even though E-Tube claims to disconnect, it doesn't. The workaround is to connect again and then check whether or not the bike shifts after 'disconnecting'. If it does not, it is not disconnected. But yeah.. I am now recommending people use E-Tube 3.4.5 until Shimano fix 4.0.2
@@BetterShifting a big thank you to you and your website, I build up a number of road and mountain bikes with Di2 and also serviced and repaired hundreds of Di2 equipped bikes over the years (live in Taupo NZ the home of Ironman New Zealand) had planned to build my new Gravel Bike with GRX 810 but a number of parts for the groupset were under available until late December so decided to go with the GRX 815 Di2 groupset and only finished building up 2 weeks ago! Friday was remand to try the new 4.0.2 which I did on Saturday and Sunday was no go because as you pointed out hitting the disconnect button and I didn't know about it not working. Started to plan on selling the groupset off and fitting the last available Campagnolo 1x13 groupset in NZ! Only talking with a customer about my disappointment in not riding etc he forwarded your email to me and showed me your website that I understand the problem, I have been waiting 2 days from Shimano about why it stopped working after less than 120 kilometres of riding from new. Please keep up your great work, we need to get this out to all good bike shops and mechanics ASAP.
@@michprent I took out the Bluetooth module, connected the bike to the laptop and got it working again. Then re installed the bluetooth module and tried the mobile phone app again. This time it worked and installed the new software.
@@bernardlinde i fixed it. Disconnect battery, and then only connect the Bluetooth module with battery. I was able to connect with bluetooth and fix firmware with phone
prentje Thanks! I also saw a similar solution to what you describe, but due to the difficulty with my Giant Propel's internal wiring it is quite hard to get to the battery without taking the stem cap off (hell to get it back on!!). Did disconnect the EW-WU111 module though and ALMOST fixed it via the PC, but the E-tube program dis not seem to he able to overwrite the firmware properly, and the battery light on the junction box is flashing green furiously, so I disconnected it and will take it to the shop tomorrow to be fixed. I will NEVER trust a Shimano Bluetooth update again. They simply don't know what they're doing. Thank goodness I don't need that bike this weekend.
Well..... based on the performance of the 4.0.2 Windows app.... we really don't want a MacOS version! ;) (If they can iron out the bugs, then I agree. And have it use the system Bluetooth!)
Is usually fixed by disconnecting the battery for half a minute or so. If it still doesn't work then, try connecting it to a PC and then run Windows E-Tube. (Sometimes you have to remove the wireless module, then connect the bike to a PC and then run E-Tube for windows).
BetterShifting _com yes i did all of that. The di2 is working again. But thé Bluetooth module is stuck in firmware upgrading, E-tube in windows want to recover firmware, but wont do it. Ordered a new one
Did you happen to catch my video the other day about how to use the E-Tube Project for Windows within a VM on under OSX? It's not all that hard to get working.
