Thank you very much for the video! Please make a new video on how to completely disassemble, clean, lubricate and assemble this reel. And what kind of lubs should be used. Thanks in advance!
Anyone with an SLX DC (I have the HG), ypu can upgrade to cross carbon drag washers by buying the SLX 70 MGL HG washers. Different gear ratios will likely be fine, but Ive only done it with the HG. I picked up the OEM Shimano cross carbon drag washers from my local tackle store (always support local shops if possible), total cost $9.25. Perfect fit. Went fishing with them, perfect function.
Hello, here a question. Lets say with this reel for example i add 1 or 2 more carbon drag washer with seperation washers. Would that increase drag power ? This reel has 11 to 12 pound drag. With the addition would it now be higher ? Like +/- 15 lbs ? for example ? Would that work ? Thanks.
Just got the SLX DC drag on this reel is crap. After a few good fish that took runs it’s shot. Going to get these now hopefully upgrade before the next trip.
Paul Sapolis I got mine from smoothdrag.com you can text them to order and they ship same day if you ask them. They were more expensive on eBay had shipping time was a week.
Awesome reel and very nice tutorial there TA. Only thing a bit baffling is why it never comes with those washers standard.Even cheaper reels come with carbon. Cheers
Perfect timing as always. I think I'm gonna go ahead and pull the trigger on the Spinfisher VI, never would have until after your review vids discussing it.
I've been fishing the 4500 quite a bit......it's pretty sweet. Started off good...got gooder....and a few hundred pounds of stripers......is like it was when new. Dunked it a few times as well. Let my friend Sudsy who's in the same boat as me....Penn ain't the same penn as they were 20 years ago.....and he was pleasantly surprised as well. (his daily driver is a gen 1 ZeeBass (the one that everyone wants)
@@TackleAdvisors yea i have looked at the ZeeBass and love the simplicity along with the all metal, just not the price lol. I will probably go with the smaller one although the 3500 might work too. I am in the north part of Alabama so not able to fish the Gulf near as much as I'd like, but figure with the 2500 I can get double duty out of it up here as well since we do have decent stripe below Wilson Dam, nothing like up there but still times where people are pulling 30-50lbers out consistently.
I've had a few Zees. Definitely not needed in FW. Whenever I fish heavy current I tend to go larger. The 4500 matches perfectly to the 9'6 tiralejo (and those tiralejo rods are cannons) If I remember correctly someone on sol was posting vids below the wilson damn...and some of the bass he was pulling out of there. They grow em large down there.
@@TackleAdvisors lol yeah I think I linked a Fox Sports Outdoors from this past spring on another vid when they were there. Unfortunately now the silver carp have been popping up on Pickwick, not bad but apparently just a matter of time when they get to an area. It's definitely not a bad spot. The stripe seem to love heavy current for sure, might have to stick with the 3500, would be better suited when i go to the Gulf anyway.
I just ordered my SLX, I was wondering what the benefit is from changing out these drag washers? awesome walkthrough though, I feel like you could take that thing apart with your eyes closed
Lol I feel that way about some reels when I have to reshoot things after brain farts or doorbell rings and garbage trucks lol... It's a bonus upgrade makes the drag just a wee bit smoother and more durable.
@@TackleAdvisors I just finished this upgrade, and it was a significant & very noticeable improvement, at least for my case. Couldn't have done it without this video!
I am considering installing one of those aftermarket drag clicker kits they sell on eBay in my SLX or Fuego CT. Curious if you have any experience with them at all or have a recommendation?
PTFE lube in fishing brands are stupid expensive. Just grab a good mechanic/ byicle brand and its very cheap. I use INOX PTFE grease MX6 it was $10 AUD for a 30g tube, the inox products are amazing i think the MX8 is a thicker product and would be better in higher pressure application like drag washer lube.
Need some help.... I followed your video to upgrade the drag washer. After I was done putting it back together, the star drag does click anymore when I turn it. Do you know what have done wrong possibly?
When you say no grease where the spool shaft comes out of the pinion exactly where is that i feel like the previous owner of my reel put way to mich grease in it
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to do it to my Curado. Question: With regards to the Belville washers, what would happen if you faced the two convened sides toward each other? I'm not sure if I'm making sense, but rather than "like parentheses" nor spooning each other... In this pattern: )(
I have a Daiwa CT and the drag was lost/locked up when I caught a 4 pound fish. It should handle at least 10 pounds of drag so is this my drag washers needing replacement?
I got one of these a few weeks ago, and fished with it this week. First fish I set the hook and drag slipped. I thought I had set it... So I tightened the drag pretty good. Next fish, set the hook, drag still slipped (these are 1lb bass in open water..). I tightened the drag to the max now, but haven’t caught another fish since. This is my only baitcaster I have had this problem with. Is this what everyone else has experienced? Do you think this mod will fix it?
Are you fishing braid.... 9 out of 10 times it's the braid slipping on the spool. Very unlikely it's the drag being inconsistent.. A few wraps of mono or a wrap of electrical tap in a balanced manner likely will resolve it.
Tackle Advisors I wish I was, but it’s 17lb fluorocarbon. I didn’t realize this reel only had 11lbs max drag (8:1), maybe it’s just that and I’m used to a little more
@@brendabbustamantay6802 I feel weird recommending aquashield because it's very difficult to work with....if you saw the spider web pattern on the top of the drag stack when i took the sideplate off. that's how stringy it is. And it it gets where it shouldn't go. It's a pain to get out. If you get it in the wrong spot of an ar clutch and you don't have a parts cleaner or dental irrigator ya mightas well throw it in the garbage. Corrosion x grease works very well so does yamalube but they behave more like normal greases
It comes down to what you're using it for and how much you value external brakes. I like the reel. It very good all around and very solid. But if you're only buying one reel for a bunch of applications. Go with a reel that you can adjust the brakes on the fly.
I find carbon washers to pay out line smoother at higher settings and they stay more consistent longer. Not really needed for bass fishing. But it is an upgrade
Hopefully you see this. I ordered the drag washers from Amazon but cal s is sparse. Is it the tan Cal's? Also, is Okumas Cal grease any good? Has better reviews...
@@TackleAdvisors awesome! Thanks for the reply! Sorry, one more-looks as though my slx is delayed. But same size washers for the curado, right? You're a invaluable asset to the community!👊
@tackle advisors Hey so I did this and I can’t figure out how to get the drag star to click again. I still have the little metal piece but it just falls down into the hole.
I think as a newbie an externally adjustable brake would benefit you. As you can start off with all the brakes on and the dial set high and as you get the hang of it. Turn the dial down. There is also the fuego which is larger in physical size but has a ver newb friendly brake which is 100 percent externally adjustable
Would this make your drag heavier? I love shimano reels but I just want more than 11pound drag for when I’m punching for instance. a reply would be immensely appreciated
Surely you got your answer by now but just in case you haven’t or anyone else sees this comment... You do not need that much drag for bass fishing. 6-10lbs is PLENTY. If you’re locking down your drag you’re doing it wrong. 25% of the rated line strength is all you need. Use a proper rod, reel and line and let the fish play if needed. The fad of essentially launching the fish into the boat is asinine.
@@Cerus98 that’s not an answer to the question at all. But playing the fish in heavy cover? It’s not a jerkbait. Anyone who has flippednheavy cover or punched a lot like the OP asked about, has lost fish simply by taking a second or two too long to bring them out of the slop, lay down, etc. having a heavier drag is akin to a H vs a MH rod. Yes, the rod is more important in controlling the fish, but if you’re modifying an SLX, you may not be a guy who can just buy a new rod solely for flipping.
I don't know. I honestly Dont pay attention to drag numbers unless something is off. Like my experience with the MGXtreme2 which couldn't make 7lbs even after mods
I follow the salute with interest. I have a question for you. twinpower sw 4000 xg, which should I choose the new stradic sw5000xg? or what would you suggest
@@Serhat1453. that's up to you and what you value. No small reel is worth 400 or 500$....you're always just paying for the refinement. With diminishing returns. They're nice but nowhere remotely needed. It's an enthusiast thing. Saragosa sw will do 99% of what the TP will do. While being easier to work on.
I'm not really a fisshermen that uses that size reel for saltwater. I'd bet due to the lack of a million bearings and it's simplicity with a tiny bit of preventative maintenance it'd do great.
Yes. The DC has the crappy felt washer. I went to my local tackle shop and they had shimano oem cross carbon drag washers. If Im remembering right, I ended up using the oem carbon washers from the slx 70 mgl hg as exact replacements for my Slx dc washers
@@arabarran i likecto use small amounts of Penrite Marine Grease for gears, sliding parts and general coating of gear box inner frames and plates, corrosion x/ reel x for slow bearings, worm drives. I like the marine grease, it's cheap, long lasting, great corrosion resitance, tacky and nice to use, stinks a bit:)
Huh? Then a couple videos ago did I melt my bench aiming a flashlight and take a temp reading of 190 degrees... And why do high power leds require so much heat sinking
I saw a guy in one video. Put the bearing on the driven shaft 5х9х3, Bearings in the handle and on the screw 4х7х2,5, Hybrid bobbin bearings 3х10х4 Ordered on Ali, but this is probably poor quality
You can add bearings but if the Knobs are shimmed well you don't really need them. The adding of a bearing in the handle shaft isn't needed.. No gain. Shimano scorpion mgl actually put a bushing there. Which I liked seeing
Do you repair reels? I found a Quantum Cabo 50 PT at the beach one weekend paired with a st. croix triumph. The rod is perfectly fine, but the reel was seized. Like the idiot that I am, I thought I watched enough of your videos to fix it myself. I ended up making things worse and pretty much-scrambling everything. It's a puzzle, I'm too lazy to put back together. I've ordered all the parts that seemed to be causing the reel to seize. I had it working but I something wasn't clicking right so I took it apart again.. now there's just a bunch of reel parts and pieces sitting on my desk. You up to the challenge of putting this puzzle back together? It's an awesome looking and feeling reel. This would be a great inshore reel if I can get it working.
Hey man! Nice score...but sorry..... I don't offer any repair services. I toyed with it a bit. But it's not something that interests me. It costs too much time, space, and $$ to do it properly. And then there is the liability and people that say they have anew reel...that send me exactly what you have without disclosing that. I've done it for a long time prior to even doing the whole youtube thing.
Hey Tackle Advisors, quick question for ya. I was out fishing the other day using a jerkbait on my shimano Citica 200i, and every once in a while when i would give the rod a good jerk, the reel would "explode" on me if you will. The handle and the spool would all move backwards while the spool was engaged, allowing line to come out uncontrollably. Not quite sure whats going on with it but I would assume it has something to do with the anti-reverse bearing. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hey Brad. Does the handle turn backwards? If you remove the spool. And look at the pinion gear where the spool shaft pin slots in. Is it free of debris? Is the side plate on all the way and how tight is your spool tension (the knob on the handle side)
Yes the handle does move backwards occasionally. Most of the time it seems the anti reverse bearing is working as I can’t just real backwards with it at any time. It only goes backwards occasionally when I jerk the rod and put some tension on the line. Other than that everything else is normal with the reel. I keep the spool tension where I would on any other reel and everything is free of debris.
@@tacklecentralfishing1051 I think it was old sunline fx 2 or suffix performance. I used few braids with it this vid was filmed awhile ago so I can't remember
"just a tiny bit of grease..." That's not tiny! Come on, I can grease the whole main gear with that amount of grease! Besides smooth drag, maximum drag is important to me, too, especially for jigs.
Oh trust me...I still have issues.I get emails every week saying a video has been approved for monetization.....Which means it was demonitized...and I had no clue and often it is an older video! Which is just lovely. I just don't bother bringing it up.
@@vinfish4697 Thanks man! Have they gotten that bad? I really don't know outside of youtube. And only from a little time I spent lookin them up when i did those two vids.
