We use the smoothest spinning reels in the world because we need to absolutely love the feeling of just casting and winding in all day long. It takes many hours of spinning to connect with these fish from land and if you're not head over heals for your setup you'll end up sitting down and miss that big hookup!

Just realised we never actually said that if you're looking at getting the Saltiga or Stella just go to a tackle shop and try them both, most likely you'll know which one to get after that hands-on feel. Should prolly add that we've never felt the new Van Staals and are just going off past experience with an old model, they are super rare over here in Australia so we actually don't know what the new ones are like (could be that they're more on the Saltiga/Stella level in terms of feel now).

I am just surprised you didn't talk about the drag a bit more. I feel like a fair amount of people probably picked the Dogfight because of its supposedly superiority in max drag. 66lbs vs 55lbs is big enough a difference. But, does it really matter in the real world? Can people actually handle 66lbs of max drag or rod for that matter? Is probably more of a perception thing that the Dogfight is a tougher reel because of its max drag. Oh and the name probably helps too LOL.

MorningTide Fishing what do u think of the penn slammer 3
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 лет назад
25kg for the Stella and 30kg for the Saltiga isn't that much difference. A good real world example is the latest Oman film where Jonny's fighting those GT. He showed me what drag he was using and it felt like about 15kg - 20kg, if needed he would hold the spool at times to add extra pressure and when I asked him about that he said he prefers to do it by hand so the actual drag is more manageable and you can control when you a want to dead set stop it without adding a dangerous amount of drag (dangerous in terms of running along the rock and all of a sudden it decides to go again mid step and you go flying haha). On this next GT trip I think I'll take a similar approach with the Dogfight and have the drag sitting around 15kg-20kg and just lock up by palming the spool. One extra thing to think about is on the Oman trip all the fellas there were using Stellas...

Not because of the big fish but rather because of having a good time together, be with the nature and talk about the best thing you can do with your freetime. I hope I can bring to fishing with it. So, thanks a lot. (BTW skip the subtitles, the world needs more of aussi talking;) ) So, thanks, Rob.

I have two saltigas a 5000h and the dogfight 8000h and you guys are exactly right when you have a nice setup thats smooth quiet good drag and holds lots of line and can handle big fish without falling apart it makes it a lot more fun. I had two penns it was like crankin a bucket of bolts. I have friends that have stellas and van stalls and I know in the back of their minds they wish they would have gotten a saltiga. good vids man keep it up!

All Three of these reels, are strong, smooth and beautiful, I will just be patient and wait for the new Shimano Stella 2018 (I hope 2018) , till now I use a customized Saltiga Z 4500 2001 model, and never had problems dealing with big pelagic fish! Keep up, uploading amazing and extremely useful videos, either from here or from Cavy fishing channel! Cheers 😊

Have both, the saltiga has a slight edge(barely noticeable until you fish each for a while) in smoothness and cranking power also feels lighter than the stella , I like the stella's egg power handle knob better, drag clicker sounds great and of course their platinum care plan is the best. All things considered the performance goes slightly towards the saltiga but the Stella's worry free warranty is the deciding factor. Until daiwa picks up their customer service Ill recommend the stella just on that factor alone. If funds is an issue don't hesitate to get the saragosa sw 20k. Ive also used the quantum cabo 100 though enough to gauge the durability it felt super solid and has the same max drag as the expedition 65+ lbs

I think years ago Shimano was the leader, but then they got a little complacent. The name Shimano was enough for the sale.Then Daiwa came back & hit the market really hard. The gearing & the sturdiness of the reels won a lot of people over. The big boy rods that Daiwa have put out are just awesome!

Both are excellent reels. But we are scared to invest big amount in those reels. Because We are in Turkey and Those brands' guarantee and services here are total crap. Especially shimano Turkey's service here is always robbing us. I am fed up complaining about them. Anyway So we can t get those for a while . We will go with OKUMA AZORES since they provide life time guarantee here in Turkey.

I have both and love them. I usually tell people they are on the same level. Both fully sealed bailed tanks. The saltiga has a lighter start up due to how light their rotor is (in the smaller sizes) so if you fish needles or gliders you might want to go saltiga as it's easier to maintain that "contact" when fishing slow. Funny you mentioned Alan. Prior to him doing the Speros review. He and I chatted and since I did quite a few reviews on the previous gosa I'd do the gosa review and he'd do the spheros. (same with the quantum. I did the smaller cabo 50 he did the larger) Lots of time and effort go into the reviews. We didn't want to step on each other's toes :) Great video. And yeah..daiwa service can be a black hole. Had a bad experience with an MP3000...30 days no word...1000$ repair bill...I've had stellas serviced and they've returned them un touched even though parts (gears and bearings) were listed on the work order as being replaced.....I know because the problem persisted and I opened them to confirm...(my grease was still on the main gear)
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
I never bought the new stella because I feel the 08 stella is a more solid fishing tool. The new stella just seems like an over priced stradic..where as the old stella had better gearing, and the line roller and more rugged seals.
@dhoary2
@dhoary2 7 лет назад
Tackle Advisors r u sure ! Better gears when 13 main gear is 20% thicker n stronger reel handle etc .. Not even if istated by alan hawk
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
I think the pinion of the 08 is a better material, and the main gear is plenty strong. There aren't too many reports of stripped stella main gears. They're out there...just not many. And the stronger handle...Sure they can make one out of a crow bar. But is it necessary. I never heard of a stella handle getting loose or failing....Though I had a 250lb bigeye hit the spread at a 90 and before the clip popped the line layed on my SW's handle knob...Shredded the rubber and cooked the bearings :) Even if you're capable of fishing 50lbs of drag...you can really only winch a few pounds realistically. The beefed up main gear seemed like a way to advertise "stronger" while actually being cheaper and adequate. The stainless pinion (and that sucker is polished smooth not like most stainless pinions)and main gear with the same size and pattern gear teeth made from the same material (forged hardened aluminum I think chemically hardened) just not as thick ...Really doesn't do much to "strengthen" the gear. As the brass pinion will wear faster. I love stellas. I have owned 6 (3 now 2 FI's 1 08 sw) I just not the biggest fan of the 13 sw. I love metaniums but thing the Antares is an overpriced bloated Novelty..Love the Stradic and fully believe it is superior to the current sustain. but hope this years upcoming Sustain is the reel deal.

Hello Morning Tide Fishing mates, greetings again from Peru....as usual I always enjoy a lot your videos. Your discussion about Daiwa and Shimano reels was very interesting to me. I recall that some months ago I asked you about Van Staal reels vs Saltiga, and you recommended me to go for the VS because the way of fishing I do (inside the shore with the water up to my chest, having salt water and suspended sand falling to my reels permanently). Something important that you mention was about the VS weight... Van Staal feels heavier than Daiwa Saltiga . In addition and after trying the Daiwa Saltiga 5000, I can confirm that the Van Staal is heavier and harder, the Saltiga is very smooth and lighter, both have similar drag, VS is easier for maintenance, Saltiga is a little more expensive but nothing relevant, and finally both are great reels. Finally I decided to go for another VS because it is really sealed and very reliable. Salt water and sand do not affect the reel at all, and you only need to rinse with fresh water every time you are back at home. Thank you for sharing your experience!!!!
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 лет назад
Yeah, that's a great point mate, VS really is for getting sandy and salty, they're made for it. The Saltiga/Stella aren't, but we don't use them for surfcasting and nowadays are very careful not to get them wet! So different reels, different applications. I'm glad the VS worked out for you!
@dhoary2
@dhoary2 7 лет назад
MorningTide Fishing u got be joking both reels good enough for surfcasting n have some dunks n heavy splash offcourse not by anymeans reel them under water or throw them in sand ) My saragosa 6000 having multiable dunks in every trip ( 6hrs or more of surfcasting 10 times a month ) n still running smooth .. Best reel for money surely is saragosa n the best money can buy is stella , well this is me.
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 лет назад
We used to get the Saltiga/Stellas pretty wet every time we went fishing (dunks) and there would be something pretty seriously wrong with them within about 3-6 months of this kind of use. We only ever rinse them after a fish though so if you're doing proper maintenance maybe they last longer, nowadays we try not to let them even get splashed (still do a bit) and they're lasting closer to 9 - 12 months. What we know of the VS you can even fish them under water no worries, just a rinse after is all they need so that's why we recommended the VS over the Stella/Saltiga (for being submerged each time he went).
@surfcaster
@surfcaster 7 лет назад
It's not fair to add van staal to the list. Waaay different monster. Can't use the saltiga or Stella in the surf the way real van staal users use them. I will never use Van Staal the way I would use either a Stella or saltiga. Different tools for different purpose.
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 лет назад
Hey mate yeah only talk about it here because we're asked daily "why don't you use Van Staal" "Van Staal would be perfect for you". We really do just care about the feel of the reel and after 5 days spinning in the hot sun when you're 7 hour into that day's session you really, REALLY have to love the feel of ur setup to have the energy to keep spinning. In the past I've seen all of the boy's sit down when it's quiet because they don't love their gear and when we put this much time and $ into our trips we gotta make the most of it. And you're totally right, our Saltigas and Stellas wouldn't last a day in the surf and we're not trying to take anything away from the Van Staals durability, just for our application it's not suitable but we're trying to get that across so we don't have to keep answering the same question haha.
@surfcaster
@surfcaster 7 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. I've watched your vids, great content and very entertaining. That being said, I haven't seen any of your fishing vids that you would require using a van staal. It will be pointless with your style of fishing. Whoever asked you why not use it, are smoking something pretty potent

Great vid I have a Penn Slammer 3, and have worked with the Stella Dogfight, doing mostly vertical jigging, and some rock livebaiting/popping. Would say that for finesse, Stella first. Its got heaps of drag for wight and turns effortly whereas Dogfight is more beasty and feels like your holding a sturdy reel. Both are crazy expensive though. The Penn Slammer 3 is cheap, smooth, slightly heavier but built like a tank. It's fully waterproof with their sealing system and has amazing frag. To be honest, I would just about say Penn Slammer is best if you want to abuse it and put it through any test possible

Be careful getting the high-end Daiwa reels serviced by third parties. Daiwa doesn't sell Saltiga-associated mag seal and drag grease so third party services can damage the current seals with inferior products. Alan Hawk has a large article on it.

Yeah I’ve used zeebaass and van staals as well. Not the most refined reels out there especially for the price. They are made to be fished while submerged in water. Built like a tank but as smooth as the sandpaper haha. Hope to buy the new saltiga someday lol, just bought the daiwa certate 19 LT 5000D and love it. Best American reel is the penn slammer in my opinion, they just get real heavy the higher in size you go up but they have a lot of drag and are tough. Much smoother than than the staals. Grew up fishing with penny reels but that daiwa certate is in a whole other league haha

Do you guys use any Penn reels??? I got a Penn Slammer 3 and I think its amazingly built and they start at 30 lbs of drag to 60!!! I know for sure the new Penn Torque's could handle anything you throw at it!

What's your thoughts on the latest model Daiwa saltist?Im looking about for a new reel but in not going to be doing enough Psycho shit to want to fork out the cost of a saltiga or Stella.
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 лет назад
Haven't used em mate so can't say! Older model Daiwa's we'd only recommend the Catalina and up but it could be these new reels are different.

Ok thanks for the feedback, I'll just chuck some money together and get a good reel. Please better to get one good one then break ten shit ones.
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 лет назад
Exactly mate, we realised pretty quick we'd already spent close to $1000 each in about a year spinning and every reel was completely broken haha. So we just stepped up to the Catalina and Saltiga's. Actually to put an expensive reel into perspective, I just bought a lure that was $150 which I might loose to a Mackerel first cast haha, everything's relative and a $1000 reel that will last you many many years if you take care of it is actually a good investment if you plan on fishing a lot.

I have both but the bearings and body of Stella are more resistance to corrosion. Upgrade both to ceramic bearings that’s what I recommend.

I do land based shark fishing and nearshore fishing with the Diawa BG 8000. I’ve been curious about the HUGE step up to the saltiga. I know it puts out more drag and slightly faster retrieve (couple inches). But why should I pay the extra 900$? The BG stands up to everything flawlessly, and while the saltiga can put out DOUBLE the drag pressure, I can’t imagine you could even crank that down to max without being RIPPED off the rocks or beach. Is there something I’m missing as to why it’s worth the step up?

That cheap. For small fish ok . Not good for big fish. I have 3 but now sale it . You pay what you got . Around $300 you got biomasster, sharagosa, penn slamer 3... or cheaper DaiwA bc .

Never tried it mate, we used cheaper reels up until about 5 years ago. Most of the new improved salt water style cheap reels weren't around back then so we should prolly buy some of them just to help you guys out with reviews.

The Catalina is 95% the same reel as the Saltiga. The only difference being that the the Catalina doesn't have a spool bearing and has a couple of bushings on the oscillation block. For a fishing the surf/stones the lack of a spool bearing is theoretically better because it's an exposed bearing which doesn't really do anything to begin with. The bushings on the oscillation block aren't load bearing, and don't rotate at any sort of speed either so there's no real point in having steel bearings there anyway. I know people are going to tear me a new one for saying this, but in my opinion the Catalina is a better overall option than the Saltigas for any situation where the reel might cop a splash or get dunked.

@nicklewis5172
@nicklewis5172 6 лет назад
Yeah, check out Alan Hawk's review on them, you can see the differences there. Another thing worth noting is that the 2012 Isla (which is a USDM Catalina) can be had for like $500-550 for the 5-7K right now which is an insane bargain.

Hi I have a question have ever try DAIWA SALTIST ?( it has similar sizes to SALTIGA or CATALINA) Can it handle a few gt fights ..or will it break immediately ?
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 6 лет назад
It's not going to explode on your first fish haha but just wouldn't be up to having locked drag with peeling line/grabbing the spool etc. over and over and over on big GT.
