Shimano's latest E-Bike motor the STEPS E7000, is the cycling giant's new mid-range electric mountain bike offering. It's light, compact and still packs a 500 watt power output to get up any mountain bike climb. Steve takes a closer look whilst out at the Roc d'Azur festival.

Aimed at long adventure riding, the new E7000 motor has minimalist controls and a small display unit for a clean cockpit. The focus upon aesthetics doesn't end there, as the 504 Wh lithium-ion batteries are available in external and internal options depending upon your mountain bike of choice.
The new E7000 motor itself weighs in at a lightweight 2.8kg, and is centred upon the bottom bracket for optimum handling and control. It's a full 2 decibels quieter than the premium E8000 motor, which was already near silent. A narrow Q factor creates a natural pedalling feel, and the motor offers a compact and robust option for those who don't want to break the bank.
As ever the E7000 continues Shimano's tried and proven three power modes: eco, trail and boost. All of these are able to be customised via the Shimano app, so that once you're out riding shifting between modes is easy and intuitive. It's no surprise that the Shimano STEPS system is becoming one of the industry benchmarks.

Hi Steve. I'm interested to know what motors use what sensors, torque or cadence or both, and how to speculate these features in order to maximise the efficiency of the assistance. For instance, as you know, low gears mean high cadence and low torque while high gears low cadence but high values of torque. So, how do these influence the level of assistance and what other variables are there to consider? I'd love a nerdy approach :) I don't have an e bike... yet.... ;) .... Thanks a lot. I totally love the videos

I would love to see videos on conversion kits. I have a full sus and I dont want to replace it with an ebike but I do want to upgrade it. I have been using a Bafang 750w for the last 5000km and love it but I think its time to upgrade so I wanted to know whats out there from other brands.

@@axisludi I suggest getting a test ride. Best example is think of the motor as front mech. If granny is turbo/boost you still need the right rear cassette gear for the terrain including traction. Trails I ride are changing every few meters so just constantly changing gears. Most ppl stay in mid mode ie Trail and only go to Eco or off to save battery and turbo/boost for short steep techy climbs.

Looking sharp on the trail Steve. Im pretty sure the switches and displays are interchangeable with 8000. The motor apparently is less aggressive but is the battery the same? Good to see another quality option coming from Shimano. This would be good for my partner on a 120mm travel bike. What was the Merida you were on?

I loved the e8000 on aesthetics alone, let alone function and weight. Not claiming they're the best out there, but they're definitely a company who understands a mountain bike and its existing standards/trends perhaps a little bit more than the competition. Can't wait to try one of these at some point too.

If you have any doubts about this motor, don’t. I just bought the Fezzari Wire Peak comp model. Let me assure you, coming from the 26” wheel era, this motor is just plain fantastic!

I hear people all of the time ask why I'm riding an eeb. The black and double black trails can only be ridden 15-20 miles on a regular mtb before you're completely sacked. But I can do 70+ miles a day on the eeb. They say it's cheating, but it's not. It's bike skills and riding a bike that's 3 times heavier. Actually it's more work but without the knee strain. And then on a regular bike, I'm even better because I can throw it around. The eeb has changed everything for me for the better.

I'll swap out my left hand E8000 switch unit for the E7000 when they become available, this will allow for more dropper post lever usage as I'm running that old push button Rock Shock one now that I don't really care for. I'd also love to see a comparison between the E7000 and E8000 including a noise test where both bikes ride past at the same speed and distance from the camera to get an idea of what 2dB difference sounds like.

Fantastic camera work and editing - well done EMBN. On a different subject, there seem to be lots of questions online re the Shimano switches and how these work with under the bar dropper post levers. I've ordered an E8000 equipped bike and want to know which (E6000 or E7000) switch to use with a PNW/One Up/Brand X/Wolf Tooth dropper lever - any thoughts? Thanks.

I personally prefer Bosch as I can run it with a belt. Something I haven’t seen yet with Shimano or Yamaha. I don’t know about Brose. But anyway, this competition can only push ebiking as a whole forward at breakneck speed. So it’s even more exciting times ahead for the industry.

Don't normally have any issues with your videos but knowing this was a paid promotion is just can't help but not believe all you said. Also a lot of the video sounded like a cheesy advert. Shame really would love a full honest opinion in this new motor. I have the e8000 and love it but think less power is still less and why would I want less when I can have more?

Are all the batteries interchangeable between the 6000, 7000 and 8000 systems? It would be good to have the option of a lighter, lower powered backup battery in the rucksack.

The Shimano site isn't that helpful in trying to find which MTB are using the E7000, as it seems that most are commuters, not MTB. Is there a better list? Thanks for the great videos!

Michael Cunningham The 2019 lower end Meridas are the only ones announced that I know of with the E7000 at this point.

I don't really think its up to shimano as to which brands or model bikes use it. That is totally a bike manufacturers choice. Shimano wouldn't have a list.

Probably the only way to compile a list is to search each manufacturer for keyword E7000 :). Even then the list would likely change by the time you created it ... Or shimano would have released the E7500 or E9000 ;)

So I have a question?? What is the best full suspension ebike with 750 watts in the USA for under $4,000.00? Does this even exist??

Yeah make your own. Get a decent full suspension and add a middrive Lunacycle or Bafang 1000w even.

What for do you need 750W? I have e8000 heavy bike scott e-genius 920 and it goes up everyehere tiding is possible. The only thing mskes me nervous is speed limit tp 25 km/h (15mph)

kawikaphotography Have you tried it? It’s a ‘lower end’ cheaper version to the E8000 it wasn’t meant to be stronger hence the name E7000.

@@tamasvarga67 Thanks for the info. I haven't tried it. I get that Shimano is covering a wide range for their customers. I'm comparing both motors against others like my Yamaha sport at 80Nm. 60Nm just seems so underpowered for the price of these bikes.

kawikaphotography Try it if you can. Some manufacturers are claiming crazy torque numbers - as the continuous output power is limited to 250W by the law (in EU) - but I’ve never seen those numbers independently verified. I have an ebike with E8000 and I pretty much never use it in Boost mode. On tarmac I use Eco and off-road I use Trail (set to Middle in the app) and I climb some crazy stuff with it.If the E7000’s power/torque is the same in Boost as the E8000 in Trail then it can be enough for 80% of the riders. I don’t know the price difference between the similarly equipped E7000 and E8000 bikes but I wouldn’t dismiss the E7000 because of a number in the specs without riding it.

kawikaphotography My wife’s bike has Yamaha PW system and I rode it a lot before I bought mine. The Yamaha has completely different characteristics to the Shimano system. It has monster power on low pedaling rpm up to ~70-80 and it runs out. The Shimano feels less powerful but it likes to spin more and doesn’t run out before ~120rpm. So it depends what you prefer. My wife rides with lower cadence and the Yamaha PW is perfect for her and I like to spin around 80-90 so the E8000 is perfect for me 😀

They put out content on things I am interested in. You are able to form your own opinion. On the other hand Shimano is prevalent in a few industries. If they decide to go electric, we all benefit. Everybody has bills.

The video shows "includes paid promotion" and I still cannot see the problem. If it makes you uncomfortable then you can skip all "first look" videos on this channel because they are the same regardless of the brand.

Boy, as good as this system may be, I just can't see this bike over the completely integrated look and engineering of the 2019 Specialized Levo's. This just looks too cobbled together still.

993mike Sure, the new Levo looks better but a Merida like this will cost half of the price of a similarly equipped Levo. Also, if carrying a spare battery (occasionally) is a preference then you can forget the Levo completely.

I agree Tamas. I just upgraded from a Scott espark 730 with e8000 and integrated shimano 8020 battery to a merida E160 900. That has steps 8000 too and the 8010 battery that is external. Couple of things from my perspective and many off road and onroad kms. Its more about the capability of the meridas component spec and overall handling on demanding trails than the battery integration IMO. Looks are one thing but that has little bearing on capability. The Scott was awesome but lacked suspension travel etc. The integrated battery in the scott also added weight and was a pain to remove. The meridas usage of smaller and lighter battery for same power output is a no brainer!!! And I have carried a spare 8020 battery in camelback over long distances and it is heavier by nearly half a kg and its shape is not good to carry. And re specialised comparison.... What you get in the merida spec vs Levo or kenevo makes the merida sooo much of a better buy hands down at least based on Australian prices.

derek harper Yes, we all have different preferences. I have a Commencal Meta Power which is pretty similar look/specs/price wise to the Merida eone-sixty. The external Shimano battery is 2,6kg and due to its size easy to carry. I made a padded pouch and when I need the spare I’m just stuffing it in my backpack which has a back protector and I wouldn’t be able to do that with a Levo battery. But of course, nothing is wrong if someone chooses a bike based purely on look...
