Just like you Byron I’m a hook keep above the spool kind of guy. Whether that be a hook keep which you have on the Tcurve premium (like I have on my Zodias) or a hook keep that comes with the rod manufactured (like my Samaki zing gen 3). Secondly i personally think the $300-450 range is the start of the high end reels mainly because of how gear has become a lot better over the past few years. Awesome review and video as always Byron!

Another great video! I've always looked at the sustain as being the start of the high end. I see the $200-400 range as the best value for good quality reels. Under $200 and it gets a bit hit and miss. Over $400 and you get that quality feel that puts a smile on your face and once you get into the $600+ range it probably becomes more of a luxury.

Thanks for the review Byron. I think the start of high end range reels varies with the brand for shimano seems to start at around the $450-550 mark and daiwa appears to start around the $350 point. Keep up the good content watching your videos has taught me so much about good gear and techniques for finesse fishing. And I personally prefer hook keepers. My wife’s rod doesn’t have a hook keep and always feel bad for holding the hook on the guide

So glad you did this review. The sustain reel is definitely on my wish list and this review has just proven it’s a worthy addition. Like other people have said, I think 450-500 is about where the high end starts. Like all good technology it eventually filters its way the down line of products to the point where it offers good value for money. Although most of my rods have a hook keeper and am a fan of having them, most times I still end up using an eyelet. Old habits I guess. Thanks mate. Channels doing great.👍🏻

Another great review. Over the last few years I’ve been upgrading my reels from low range to mid and the difference has been amazing. I feel the high range starts around $375-400 range. As for the hook keeper. I can take it or leave it but do tend to notice when a rod doesn’t have them.

Hey Byron im new to your channel discovered by chance and happy i did your clear and concise verbal skills are easy to understand and your vids are no bull infotainment starting price for high end gear i think should be around the 300-350 mark as i know alot of good fishos who just cant afford to spend mega dollars on gear like myself with cost of family and living expenses leaves little for pleasure but would no doubt benefit from it... on the hook keeper i would like all rods to have them as it would save on the guides from scratching nicking rusting and even epoxy cracking but if they dont well thats fine they'll probably have em on top shelf rods which will be beyond our price point anyway

I know I’ll sound like a broken record, but great video yet again. Really appreciate the time you take with these reviews. Onto the giveaway answers, I think that 400 - 500 mark for starting the entry level for high end gear, it seems like it’s kind of consistent with other brands and the price range just feels right. The hook keepers, yes, on every rod please, I don’t mind too much where it is, above the spool, in the butt section, (nice being able to attach to spool too) just give me one. I like things to be tidy and hook keepers help. Thanks again legend.

You've clearly made a huge personal commitment to this channel Byron, and I can't even imagine the work that goes into getting the camera shots, drone footage and editing to such an amazing standard- so congratulations and thanks for all you do! I don't understand why hook-keepers aren't built into every rod. Even if you never want to use them, there's no downside to having them there- and the only way you wouldn't need them is if you rig up on the water- which is a waste of fishing time. No chance! As for reel prices- it obviously comes down to size. In the Shimanos, the CI4/Vanford has most of the tech, but with industrial plastic parts to cut costs. The Sustain/Twin Power reels have everything you need and the Stella adds a bit more bling. They're beautiful pieces of equipment but I don't need 'gorgeous' in a reel, and it would ruin my day if I bashed one on the rocks. The Sustain is definitely the sweet spot for me, and the T-Curve Premium/Sustain combo looks like pure gold! Again- thanks for an amazing channel!

Nice review byron! I actually like the way u mention at the end of every episode you make a comment to stay safe. People don't notice it but it's most important. I think $449 is that starting point for high end reels. The sustain would be a nice upgrade from my stradic's. As for keepers I havnt used them but definitely might look into purchasing some. 👍

Thanks for the great review once again Byron! I purchased a 5000 Sustain last week and can honestly say price point , features and fit for purpose (in my case beach caster, ) the Sustain was in a place of its own. Fast retrieve, light weight and relatively small in size in comparison to other brands. Great job Shimano!!! As for the high end price Point , I consider anything around the $600 mark to be a higher end reel with notable differences. As far as the hook clips …. Yes yes and yes! A must have

I really enjoy your candid reviews on different products. I’ve always felt that a hook keeper is really handy thing to have as you can avoid hanging your lure on the guides that can cause all sorts of issues. Reels in the $300 range is starting to get into the high end range. But I also believe you get what you pay for. Pay some more $$$ for a quality product and it can last a lifetime. Another great review mate with some awesome information on both products! I personally think high end reels start at about $400 plus but in saying that anything above about $280 will get you some really nice gear that won't break the bank! Also hook keepers are a must above the reel seat where I won't get lures stuck in my hand picking up my rods and also to save my reel seats and guides from unnecessary damage. Once again a great review Byron, always entertaining, well edited videos with great info about the product(s), I personally believe reels around the $400 mark are about the beginning of what I would classify as high end reels, with some exceptions i.e. The Vanford when it was first released, as for rods I’m a massive fan of having a hook keep on there, saves your guides a lot of possible problems and helps you know exactly where your lure is whenever you pick up a different rod, I do love the way the infeets have their hook keep below the reel seat to keep it out of the way of the line but rods like the millers with their super small, low profile hook keepers are also great. Once again great video Byron keep it up!

Another cool review mate. I grew up with Shimano and always saw the Sustain as a semi-high end reel. I always saw over $500=high end so I agree with the high end entry level description. I use hook keepers and hats off to Daiwa who place them on the butt section (Infeets) as I’m constantly getting pricked by lures on hook keepers above the reel seat when picking up my rods. Cheers.

Yes I would love if all manufacturers would put hook keepers on their rods from high end to lower end

I think the high end starts around the $400 mark, seems to be the biggest jump in quality. I am a MASSIVE fan of the hook keeper on a rod, makes a heap of difference as I rig my rods up the day before I go and have to transport them in my car - the hook keeper means I know where the hook is, much better there than on a guide or in my finger!! Excellent review mate, keep the content coming!

I believe high end starts at $500 onwards where we tend to see big improvements on weight, reliability and water resistance. A hook keeper on a rod is always welcomed for people like me who love to have their lure outfit rigged and ready while bait fishing on the off-chance of a bust up! Awesome reel for its price point and looks amazing too 🔥

I had my fair share of entry level reels from daiwa and shimano but my first "proper" mid level reel is the vanford and I got it paired with a XLFC Millerod (after watching you recommending it in one of your videos), its my favourite combo thus far. I think hook keepers are almost essential in most rods and it is certainly a great quality of life feature.

Thanks Byron for yet another fantastic and honest review. I have last years T-curve but the new one looks great. In terms of price that I would consider to start at high end, I would think approximately $450-500 as a starting point. In terms of a hook keeper, I’d love all my rods to have one included. Definitely a good thing! I’m obsessed with topwater fishing at the moment so I’m being more conscious of where I’m attaching my lure to the rod. In my older Ian miller rod it has a keeper which I find really useful but my T-curve doesn’t have one so I have to be more careful with the guides.

I have used the Stratic CI4 , now the Vanford from the beginning of that reel and have LOVED it UNTIL the first service. The reel is never the same after a service weather from the factory or local repair. I fish 30 hours a week so perfect performance is important to me. I have traditionally replaced my reel about every 12-14 months so this year I am going with a Sustain 2500. I fish Silver Salmon in Alaska and speckled trout and Red Drum in Florida so my reels take a beating!

Literally every time I see you talk about gear I want to get it! Great engagement in the delivery mate In regards to the price point on a high end reel I’d say anything that cracks the $500 mark in the smallest sizing is the beginning. You really see that jump up from your $200-300 reels as you start to get the nice extras often with weight reduction as well. Personally I love a hook clip - prevents easy mistakes around the eyelets and is also a good way to keep leader knots outside of the eyelets while having enough leader for most situations

Great vid as alway Byron I love when rods have hook keepers! nothing worse then scratched up guides after spending your hard earned money on a nice rod, As for reels the quality has gone through the roof in past few years, I feel the quality of the reels like td sol an td black are high quality so for me that's where I think the high quality reels start, something like that shimano would be amazing.

Hey Byron once again good quality honest review. Keep up the great work. Not bias to Shimano or Daiwa, in fact I own one of each. Love my Diawa TD Sol 3 paired with a TD Black rod and also love my Vanford paired with a Zodias. I agree that the entry level high end reels should be around that $400 mark. And as most on here have said all rods I think should have the hook keeper for longevity. Had to have my Zodias rectified by my local tackle store who did a great job in adding a hook keeper that looks like it’s meant to be there. Great honest review again mate. That TCurve looks mint.

Great review, I have been waiting on this review for a while, but I couldn’t wait any longer so I got one myself, although I am not a fanboy of any particular reel manufacturer, I do love this reel , however IMO do find it a bit on the expensive side even for a sustain, especially if you consider what the Vanford offers . The weight on the FJ sustain was a concern but like you said it is not noticeable on the water.

Great review. I was brought up using kmart rods and reels. So my starting to buy higher end/quality gear started at around $100 and now slowly build up to much better quality now. I do like the hook keepers. Much prefer to have gear setup ready to go. Hate using the guides as hook keeps when there is nowhere else.

Thanks for the review chieftain as always. I think you are about right, I'd say the high end gear starts from approx $400 going up to $1000+ (have you seen Diawa's new 22 Exist - looks unreal). Re: hook ties/lure clips, I personally love them. I find that they are especially great for trout fishing as your moving/wading about all day. Just nice to know your lure is secure and tangle free at the next spot!

Thanks for feeding my inner tackle-rat, Byron. That was delicious! 😋 I like to look at the price points in terms of small, medium and large, so I reckon the Sustain is at at the top of the mid range. I’d say the high end would start around $500 and I’d expect to be getting something made in Japan at that level. I laughed out loud when you mentioned the hook keeper. I noticed it earlier on in the clip as I use similar after market jobs on my rods. I love cork handled rods, they just seem more high end to me. I have a some old Ian Miller Bream Busters which I love (also with no hook keeper!). I think G-Loomis do cork handles best and all their rods have hook keepers as standard, too. It is a bit of a pet peev of mine that after spending $500+ on a rod that I need to add a dodgy 10 cent hook keeper! Also, it’s great to see Shimano supporting quality content creators. Congratulations all round.

Hi Byron, I would say $450 mark for high end , I purchased a sustain back in December .. love it. I would put it up with my Luvias. I would prefer built in hook keeps on the rod, the plastic add on’s are ok, but the rubber band doesn’t last long. Keep up the great reviews, love ya work. 🍻🍻

And with the rod clip / hook clip I feel is real good - I just bought a new little amped for cast and It doesn’t have a clip of which is just annoying for the simplicity of having your lure right near your hands whilst reducing corrosion of the guides 🤙

I remember when the Daiwa certate 2010 model reels hit the market at the $550.00 price point and I fell in love with them, and that's what I set my benchmark as a high end reel. Was not a fan of the TCurve Premium rod when I checked it out, opted for the TD Commander Ocelot instead, which comes with a hook keeper as all rods should.

Nice review mate. I tend to buy daiwa of late but looking for a possible change up, saying that looking at the daiwa reels I have I think around $350-400 is about where the higher end gear starts. As for the hook keeper I think it's a must have, it's such a handy simple addition for a rod manufacturer to put on that makes life so much easier. I've lost countless of those little plastic and rub add on ones along the way. Since you mentioned in another video I've started using the top of the drag knob also.

Another great review mate. I have never really fished with hi end rods and reels until now, well sort of, my 2 main reals now are the Vanford 2500 and a Ci4+ 2500. I thought this would be a starting point for high end reels but after watching your reviews I think the next price point up might be the starting point for a higher end reals After getting a millers grub freak rod I love the placement of the hook keeper on that rod it just works and I haven’t yet come close to hooking myself yet unlike some keeper placement on other rods. Hey mate great video love the reel and would not mind getting my hands on one of them. To me high end reels don't start at the price because you could find a great reel that is super smooth and has great drag settings that is like 100 bucks. But there are some great reels out there that I have found starting at about $250-$300 dollars which is a reasonable price for the ones I have seen and felt. I have used the rod clips before to hold your lure and they are pretty good. I liked putting them above the reel just higher then the grip which was comfortable for me. I just recently got an infeet and love the holder below the grip too. Love your videos, keep doing what your doing mate.

The price point for me is around $350 and up that a nice entry level price but once u start u can’t go back to lower end. And I think it’s a must that hook keepers are a must they are so handy. Love the video keep them coming.

Byron , like the way you do your reviews without the promoting or demoting of products just the pro's and con's , enjoy your content too. Well now if you are FIFO miner or a tradie upper end is Stella/Exsense /Twin Power world or if you work in retail like me then its a Nasci or MAYBE a Stradic 😅 I love my rod clips but find the ones that are on the odd factory rod pretty fiddly and mostly useless and sorry to say that includes the one you are using here (which I have tried )which at least is easily removed and consigned to the bottom of storage box. I have resorted to binding on a snake guide at a suitable height above my foregrip (usually 30-70mm ) on top of rod opposite to reel and works a treat as super easy to locate hook by feel. I also use this as a tether point in my kayak when i'm travelling from spot to spot or trolling. Cheers mate and keep it coming,

Hey Byron, I just watched this video again after a year or so as I’m thinking about adding the Sustain to my collection. I was going through the comments and it looks like the $500 mark is what most Aussie’s see as the start of high end reels. I’m going to push that to $600 + and to be more specific about the 2 big brands, it starts with Certate at Daiwa and Twin Power at Shimano. Cheers

Great commentary on the newShimano gear. Firstly I think $450-600,would be a gate way to top end,and lastly,most definitely a lure keeper on the rod above the hand. Keep up the great vids.

Hey Byron, Glad to see your hitting reviews on gear at different price points. Keep it up 👍 I personally think high end reels start $600 plus. Close to a gorilla when adding in rods and tackle. I like having the hook keeper to protect my guides and also line when swapping between set-ups all day. Cheers mate 👍

Great video as always mate high end for me start in the 300 - 400 dollar mark but in recent years that has changed. With the big 2 companies they are starting to put a lot a of flagship features in more budget reels. which for the consumer is great. All rods should come with hook keepers.

Starting around the 400 mark is a good entry level for high end reels. And I love the hook keepers, little bit disappointed in the zodias not having one, my old shimano raider had one. I use the eyelets on my zodias now and find the eyelets are resting on things when i lean it up and my lures always get caught in things. With the hook keeper it’s just out the way and never had a problem hooking or catching anything. Was also great for bush bashing skinny streams. The hook keeper didn’t get caught up around trees and all, but the eyelets somehow hook everything

Hook keepers are absolutely brilliant, keeps hooks well clear of guides and neatly tucked against the rod. I often find, when lending any gear to friends new to fishing, they almost always hook lures to guides (unfortunately instinctive) so the hook keeper would be a neat way of solving that problem as well. High end is relative to what the market has to offer. The 'ceiling' for lightweight spin reels seems to be around the $1000 mark (Shimano Stella and Daiwa Exist for example) so $400-$500 would be a reasonable, comparative entry point between 0 and $1000 for high end reels.

Thanks for the review Byron. Great as always. I guess a price over 300 would be a good starting point for the high end reel. However, it depends on the product itself. Having a hook keeper can be helpful. My rods do not have a hook keeper which makes it a bit uncomfortable.

Hi Byron, great vid again. For me the high end reels start at 500where the revelry is at. As to the lure holder it's not a deal breaker but surely rods aimed at lure fishing should have one. Love a bit of cork myself!

HI Byron, Great review , the new Sustain looks awesome ! I think the high end market for reels starts at that $500 price point personally and I think a hook keeper on rods is a great idea ! much better than hooking jig heads or trebles on to the guides Good luck for the upcoming tournaments mate !

Another great video Byron! Big yes to hook keepers - they save grips, guides and keep hooks out of the way. Entry to the high end of reels...$450 would be about right. Interesting to see the new Stella and Exist come out - looks like prices have gone up! Should be interesting to see what tech filters down the ranges and whether the entry to high end moves as s result.

awesome review! I'd say high end reels have a starting price point around $450 and it just goes up from there. Personally I dont really mind the if the rod doesn't come with the hook keepers. I tend to use the bail arm often to hold my lures and I'd have to say it kinda feels like hook keepers with rods is very simular to reels not having a line holder like the shimano saragosa.

hi byron loved this review and all your other vids. i think personally think the high end reel price should starts at around that $400 mark.i’m also a big fan of hook keep i would prefer for them to come on the reel but have them placed below the reel seat to reduce the risk of tangle or getting caught up

Great review Byron, as far as high end price’s starting point for reels, I would think over the $500 mark but for the average fisho that’s getting up there! Hook keepers on rods is a great invention!

Hi Byron another outstanding video. Your videos help me so much when it comes to choosing gear to but. I think that a high end reels would start at around $400 mark. I also think that all rods should come with a hook keeper so your hooks can't mess up your guides.

Awesome video mate, personally I think the high end reel price starts at around $400-$450. And I really like the clips on rods to hold your lures instead of hooking lures onto the reel or eyes on the rod.

Great vid. For me fishing mainly estuary $300 is where I consider high end starting. That's where I stop letting the kids and friends play with them. As for hook keepers, I love them and tend to look for them when purchasing a new rod as I hate hooking onto a guide or into a handle.

Another great video in testing those new Shimano reels. I think that the starting price for high end reels is $400 (like the Stradic) since most of the tech from the high end reels trickle down on the affordable ones. Most definitely rods should have hook keepers to spare the guides from having the hooks on them. Again, great review and insight on a Shimano reel. Cheers!

Another brilliant video Byron and one that really got me thinking. I think there are two answers to where high-end reels start price-wise. The first is our own personal experience, I remember more than 20 years ago using my paper run money to buy a nice little Penn for $49 and I thought it was elite lol A few reels later and I had a Stradic Ci4 1000, and suddenly that was the best thing since sliced bread. The point being, I think our own personal point of reference plays a huge role. A VZ Commodore is an amazing car if you've only ever owned an old Bluebird lol But what is the real starting point, what do you need to pay to get into true high-end gear, that ticks the sort of boxes an AMG GT or Porsche GT3 does. I'm going to say it's double what most feel, closer to the best part of $800rrp. As for hook keepers, I prefer manufacturers leave them off so that I can fit my own exactly where I like it. Too many high quality rods come with keepers that are of poor quality and placed as an afterthought. Cheers again Byron, easily my favourite RU-vid channel. I think that majority of the time once the price point is over that $350 to $400 it enters that higher end and that different step in feel and quality. And yes definitely hook keepers on rod is a plus above the fore grip is where I prefer as long as it's out of the way. Great video Byron as usual 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Thanks Bryon for another great review .My mate thinks sedona is highend reel .Between $500 and up I think you're starting to look at some pretty good reels. Yep it pain's me to say I've got the hook keepers like that to on two of my rods they work .but rods should come with keepers nice looking rod Bryon 👌

Thanks for the great review mate. I guess peoples idea of high end reels depends on budget and the fishing application they going to use it for and the environment they use it in, I own several Vanford’s Esmeraldas, Biomasters and other similar reels from both Shimano and Daiwa . I am not a tournament fisho and fish as mush as family and work life allows me to and the reels that I own do very well for what I use them for . Having said that having raised 5 children that are now mostly grown up to adulthood I probably go up a level when purchasing my next reel . As for hook keepers on rods , definitely a must for me especially on high end rods you don’t want to damage the guide train ceramics by hooking lures to them. Have a great day mate.

Hi Byron, Loving the Videos keep them coming, It's definitely helping me with fishing... Personally I feel the high end market for fishing is around $299+. Especially where the world is at now, affordability is key. I know i can't afford it with 4 kids... With the hook clip it should be a standard inclusion on Rods, I believe it's much safer...

I recently got the nasci 1000 as a 2nd bream/bass rig and it’s been great, I have however just been touching up on the next level with geting a curado dc. This is the most I’ve spent of a reel to date personally I think once you hit the $500 mark you hit the higher end of the market but the “high end I recon kicks off at $700. As far as having hook keepers I hate not having one and I’ve not been a fan of the oring type ones. I have organised to her keepers added to all my rods from a local rod builder. One of these would make a epic addition to my growing baby shimano lineup

Great giveaway, I've been considering the Sustain since it was announced and it looks the goods. For me, $399 is where the premium reels start and I don't use hook keepers so not fussed if a rod doesn't have one.

Great Review Byron, I think that the starting price for a high end reel begins at around $500. As for hook holders I’m a big fan, they allow me to keep my lures safe whilst on the move. I would like to see it as a feature across all price ranges. 👍🏽

Hi Byron, personally I think you’re getting into that high end echelon at around the $450-480 mark. Mid range from $200 and entry below. Hook keepers are a must which I purchase for all my combos if they don’t have one already so would be nice if it were just included. Love your videos mate keep it up!

Another great video! I refuse to buy rods without hook keepers now. I've only ever had one without one but that Shimano T Curve Premium is very tempting. The after market keepers are trash and the orings that hold them on always perish on me. High end reels start at $400 in my eyes.

Loving these Shimano reviews 🔥 I honestly thought $300 was the benchmark for high end fishing seems like a fair amount of money also Shimano hardly use hook keepers on their rods but it is an upgrade long over due for lure series rods
