This ukulele improvisation starts in Indian alap style. Alap is more or less the Indian word for intro (without rhythm). An Indian classical dhrupad concert starts always with an alap, which is the meditative part of the concert and it has no rhythm. Later on comes the rhythm into the performance.
This time you can hear the sound of the Ortega Concert Ukulele Rudawn-CE (Earth Series) in combination with a shimmer effect from the Mooer Reverie Reverb pedal. Shimmer is a kind of reverb that creates a layer of high angelic sounds in the background of the melody lines that are played.
The performance starts with the pure shimmer effect in the alap part. The rhythm is created by several effects which are also available in the Mooer Reverie Reverb. The effects are: Wah-Wah, Low-Pass, Flanger, Tremelo and Water. They are combined with the shimmer effect. Also you can control the speed of the rhythmic pattern in this pedal. You will hear that the rhythm is starting in a slower tempo and while going thru the different effects is increasing to a more higher tempo. In classcial Indian concerts it is very often that the tempo of the rhythm is increasing during a concert and going to a climax in the end.
The tuning of the uke is in an open tuning on the frequency of the planet Neptune. This is the basic tone (SA) of the raga. When you play all the strings open without any chords or notes you will hear this frequency.
The melody lines that you hear during this performance are played in an intuitive way by John. A concert from John is never the same like any concert before and always played in this way. Pure from the heart and soul.
Hope you will enjoy this short ukulele meditative improvisation and have some relaxing time with it. Namasté :-)
