Damn, I didn't realize that Benkei saw that Getter Dragon finishes transforming slightly slower than Shin Getter does.. which would explain why they're grinning. I thought that they were grinning bc they're insane and smile even if they were at a dire situation..
At first I didn't realize what he meant when he said "did you see that, Hayato, Ryoma?" but he was referring to this. Man, this series sure makes your brain work for it!
I think its less Mechanical Beast Dragon has a slower transformation as much as its Saotome/Stinger/Cohen can't transform as fast as the Getter team can. That's how I interpreted it anyway.
@@DragoEpyonthis fight is pretty much 1 to 1 adaptation of OG Getter vs Getter G in Shin Getter Robo manga, where agents of Dinosaur Empire hijack G and try to kill getter team with it. They in response bring up rebuilt OG Getter Robo from the museum and try to fight in it. But G is ten times more powerful than the original, so every attack (be it beam from getter-1, drill from getter-2 or just punching really hard with getter-3) gets repelled by reptilians just mirroring their formation. That is until getter team notices their adversaries, despite being specifically trained and enhanced for their mission, lack the experience and as because of that their combination is a fraction of a second slower, which Ryoma then exploits catching one of G's jets mid transformation. He also jokes how it's Benkei's first time using Bear Gou and he severely slows everyone down, yet he still was faster than reptilians. You should definitely read Shin Getter Robo and other Ishikawa's works, it's a blast.
“I’ll show you the real power of the original Getter team!” -Saotome This line always stuck out to me. In this continuity, Saotome, Stinger and Cowan were the first Getter team? I wish we could’ve seen more of that, because they’re actually pretty damn good pilots!
Watching this fight again in context, it shows just how experienced Ryoma, Hayato and Benkei are. Up until this point, Shin Getter was struggling to fight even a handful of invaders, because it was being piloted by (respectfully) fresh-faced newbies who had never even seen a Getter before. Now, the original Getter team is in the seat, and they're able to bring out its full potential. Just look at the change at 1:48. That's way smoother and faster than anything Go's team managed. That's something you can only get from experience.
I remember watching the series when THIS fight scene happened out of practically nowhere. I had the dumbest grin on my face when I rewound it like, "WTF?!?"
