The uncle is a broken idealist. He was a veteran of the initial Legion assault 10 years ago, when all the citizens of tghe Republic fuoght together, both Alba and Colorate (86ers). He once had values just like Lena and her father, but the reality of the Republic's atrocities ground down his will over time. He's been waiting for the end for a while now. This is his last act of strength and love, providing Lena the time she needs to try and fulfil her ideals, even though he sees it as fruitless.

Uncle wasn't "We should let Legion kill us or the 86 will kill us" he was "we should let Legion kill us so the 86 don't enslave us, torture us, humiliate us in front of whatever other countries might still be around, and (he was insinuating to Lena) rape our women" for revenge.

Also he's just sick of the republic already that he think they deserve being wiped out. He's just hiding his thoughts with those grandiose words. He has always been angry about how the republic did things, and also he's inablility to change it, to the point that he would gladly see the republic burning in flames, even if he's in there with them.

It's partly that, but it's mostly "we fucked over the 86, and our people don't feel an ounce of regret. Let the legion kill us-- this is what we deserve." He's the epitome of the idealist who gave up. He's pretty similar to Ernst, who outright says in earlier episodes that if humanity can't survive without killing children, then humanity doesn't deserve to survive at all.

Uncle does nothing but spit facts. He knows the Alba are despicable, that the 86 are marginalized and essentially being genocided. If the 86 did just bail and let the Alba get wiped out, he'd have no problem with it, in fact he thinks it's what SHOULD happen. When he says "if we're lucky, it'll just be a massacre", he's leaving the vengeance and pillaging part out, which is unfortunately way too common in these types of situations. Despite all that, he still walks his ass to the front lines with a rifle to buy Lena time so that her idealist dream gets one last chance of becoming the new reality instead of the corrupt system he's been stuck in for a decade.

Her uncle, Jérôme Karlstahl isn't an idiot. He has just lost the will to try at this point. He lost his brother who were an idealist, just like Lena, and if an idealist who sits at the top of the chain of command can't change anything, then who can. He himself has undoubtedly tried to change things in the past, but there is just no changing a whole nation overnight. The only thing to do is to create awareness, but in doing so, you create a whole new enemy. The 86 would never just accept or forgive the republic. And all of this isn't even taking the threat of the Legion into account. While Karlstahl has indeed given up trying to change the system, he still loves Lena, and it is important to note, that he HAS given her free reign this entire time. He never forced her to stand down in her pursuit, nor stand in the way of her climbing the ranks to get to her position. In fact, i'm quite sure that she has him to thank for that. I count that as him not having given up completely. And now once again, he is just doing what he can to protect her. I fucking love his character, and all of the subtext of his actions/inactions. Such a real, nuanced, and well executed character. Had hoped you would've liked him too, but oh well.

The other members of the Nordlicht Squadron were warrior-class slaves called the Vargus who have been fighting at the borders since the days of the Empire. They were treated as "beastmen" by the Empire and were not given citizenship but were allowed to live freely at the border as long as they repelled the Empire's enemies. That's why it's called the lands at the borders are called the Wolfsland. The Federacy still basically treat them the same way and they aren't allowed into officer academies, only holding non-commissioned officer ranks. They are basically mercenaries. Raiden is one of their descendants.

The uncle wasn't being stupid, he is well aware of the things the Republic have done to the 86. He lost all hope for the Albas in the republic and thought that they all deserved to die.

I think you might have greatly missed the true meaning of Karlskal’s speech. And sure it’s not hard to miss, but it should be noted that his speech hides a lot of meaning, especially in the anime, which has a mildly censored version of said speech. In the light novels, there’s one change, the line that reads “If we’re lucky, it will just be a massacre, but you know enough about history that that won’t be the case,” reads in the light novels as “If we’re lucky, it will just be a massacre, but you know enough about history that that won’t be the case, especially because you’re a woman.” And now why would Asato Asato herself add that little bit of extra words and gravity to that line? Well it reveals Karlskhal’s true fear, and the true meaning of his speech. The meaning of which, is that there is a fate worse than death, and he believes it’s better for people to die quickly, than meet that fate. He may not say it often, but he did truly care about Lena, so much so, he treats her as if she were his own daughter. And I’ll be blunt, he believed in that moment, that it would be better for Lena to die nearly painlessly by legion hands, than to be raped to death. The thing is, if you keep reading, and you look into book 4, you may find he was both wrong about his speech, and correct at the same time. There is a fate worse than death, but he was wrong about what it was.

Oh yeah.... there is a WHOLE lot more going on with Lena's Uncle there. He was saying the Alba DESERVED to die, and it was going to be a choice between falling to thebLegion, or falling to the rest of the world with the 86 taking "justified" revenge. It is time to either die in battle, fall on your sword, or be prepared to die on your knees for your sins.
