Shine On - The Forgotten Shining Location | Feature Documentary

Relive the story of how Stanley Kubrick took over Elstree Studios for a whole year whilst making his iconic film, The Shining.
Now, nearly 45 years since its release, and all remanence of the Overlook Hotel’s sets thought to have been destroyed, one last filming site remains at the infamous studios.
The Shining’s Executive Producer Jan Harlan, Art Director Les Tomkins and Stanley’s daughter Katharina Kubrick, assigned the role of Location’s Researcher on the film, revisit the studio locations and share their memories about a film frequently voted the best horror film of all time.
“The production of The Shining has been well documented and analysed, but this is a story which has never been told. Pivotal scenes from the film took place in these areas, so going back to them felt like stepping into the movie itself.” - Katharina Kubrick.
Produced and directed by Paul King and narrated by multi-award winning actor Michael Sheen.
The project was made in collaboration with the Stanley Kubrick Film Archive, Elstree Studios, UAL, Warner Bros. Entertainment and the Kubrick family.

It was also really nice to have that dedication to Shelly at the end of it. RIP Stanley, you made a horrifying masterpiece. RIP Scatman, you created some wonderful memories for Danny Lloyd. Fantastic! A great way to remember Stanley Kubrick on his birthdate. What a brain-warp of a trip to take, seeing the locations then and now...how they were then, and how they are now. It would be unreal to actually walk through all of that, trying to visualize yourself in the movie and guessing which location hosted a certain scene. Also, I got a little teary at the end, with the then-and-now crossfades, especially when Shelley Duvall says "'I'm a Wendy!", fading into an echo. (I got the 500th "like", by the way!)

Excellent feature documetary, my Mom watched The Shining when it came out, she has loved the film ever since, never forgot about iconic elements such as Jack Nicholson' stellar performance, Danny's trycicle or the rooms, when I told her that the film was made on set, she couldn't believe it. I think Kubrick and his team managed to create a movie with an atmosphere that it's not only uneerving (liminal spaces) but also nostalgic, nostalgia for a time we never lived, the 1920s (also the 1980s in my case). Love to hear the crew theorizing about the movie, wether the ghosts are real or not.

Wow! The food pantry still has the original shelving in it? Really amazing! So for 45 years, what has that room been used for?? This is perplexing! Evidently the shelving was never in the way of other uses for that room all through the years - - how fortunate. And since the shelving was surely constructed inside that room, it could not simply be conveniently dragged out :)

Splendid film that stirs memories of when I first saw The Shining on the day it opened in Los Angeles. I won’t say more here about the scene in the hospital that was removed after it ran through the gate just a few times. Legend is Stanley ordered it physically cut out of the last reel in the projection room of each of the theaters that housed a print and those trims destroyed. Katharina Kubrick gives a hint of something about those frames when she says in this documentary that she won’t go on with what’s on her mind. It would be meaningful to see that scene again with the dialogue that Mr. Ullman and Wendy exchange, and from what I remember culminates with five words before the scene closes, and the film returns to the Overlook Hotel revealing the photo on the wall which remains in the current cut.

All the studios being utilized made this look so real that you wouldn’t even know it was filmed in the studio… I really thought that was all filmed here in Oregon! Wait till you watch the DVD of the Tom Cruise and Tim Curry movie called Legend. It looks so real like they were actually filming outside. You wouldn’t have known it was in a huge studio, but there were so much lighting inside to make it look realistic that it started to catch the building on fire and that was the end of the original 007 filming location.

It would have been grossly inappropriate -- yet still somewhat hilarious -- if the last image had been captioned: "In loving memory of the ol' spermbank upstairs . . ." and I say this as someone who thinks Shelley Duvall's performance was PERFECTION, the performance required by her at-times brutal taskmaster, the perfectionist Stanley Kubrick. The fear we in the audience felt throughout the film was catalyzed by the fear she emoted in the scenes where she had to maintain that on-the-edge terror for months and months, in take after take after take. She really suffered for her art, and we are the beneficiaries.

It makes perfect sense when you realize it's all the imagination of Jack Torrance. The movie (for the most part) we see is the novel or screenplay Jack Torrance the writer is typing on his typewriter. Jack doesn't kill Halloran; nor does he try to kill his family. We the audience are drawn into the movie by being placed in the imagination of Jack Torrance. While Jack is at the Overlook, he doesn't spiral down into madness... he learns of the history of the Overlook and writes his novel about it. That's why there are 2 Gradys, Danny's impossible Big Wheel ride in an architecturally broken hotel, Ulmann's impossible office window, chairs appearing and disappearing, TVs not plugged-in working, etc. Jack, the character, (in Jack the writer's novel) is let out by Grady's ghost, because that's what Jack wrote. It's all the imagination of Jack the writer, and we, the audience are in the maze of Jack's mind, and seeing his novel unfold on the screen, as Jack writes it. Kubrick actually paid homage to King, because Jack is basically King, going through the ordeal he did when writing "The Shining". For decades I've been trying to convince people of this, but alas, no one believes me, so that's how I know I'm right, but believe whatever you like.

Very interesting take on this Mark. Something worth considering. What amazes me is that I grew up in the town that King visited, and where his idea for the novel occurred. We have visited the Stanley Hotel many times, and had our school prom at the Stanley Hotel years before the movie was made. It is so strange to see how close the film sets and depiction of the hotels interior match the actual Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado where King began this epic journey.
