They don't really want you to feel sorry for them. It's not a way of trying to convince us that he was "still a good guy". They show that even humans doing evil things sometimes have pure things their heart is set on. May they have turned to evil ways to achieve their goal, they still are complex humans with a history and emotions. Especially in scenes like this, they're doing a last good deed, knowing their life ended already and they can achieve one last thing that is important to them. That they can be useful for one last time. Lot of it has also to do with honor due to their culture. Their souls eventually finding their ways. They believe that with these deeds they can pass on peacefully. Or with Housen it was to show that even tho he was a bad guy, by raising hinowa a bond was created between them, that they still meant something to each other. It was exploitative and abusive, but their conflicted emotions made his last moment important. The beauty of Gintama is showing that every character has depth. They are challenging our morality in creating grey and complex characters showing nothing is black and white. They are making us think and feel about the characters. Not just easy to swallow content with surface characters.
The way Gintoki was living blaming himself for what he did in his past(And I won’t tell what it’s exactly is to avoid spoilers), Her word “I’ll execute you the way you’ll die peacefully” probably sounded like something nice to him. Because at this point of his life he probably was thinking he deserved a painful death. The fact that at least someone think he deserves peaceful death was something hopeful for him. That’s why I think Gintoki remembers that moment with her so strongly.
@@Flower-qq7je oh shit 😢 oh fuck 😢 I didn't think about that. I swear this is the arc that keeps on giving. Afte watching the whole series, it gives context to so many other scenes. Someone in another comment section mentioned that giving himself up was probably his attempt at dying without having to do it himself, but Yaemon basically told him he had to keep living and that basically became his philosophy. Also funny that now he has someone who's going to wash his back before he goes to the afterlife. Gin had a lot of morbid plans with various side characters.
@@kendra_t true, when I re-watched Gintama after finishing the whole series, especially after knowing his past, so many things started to make sense. For example, in ep 180 where he fights with Jirayia (Tsukuyo’s master)he said “A coward is enough for taking down another cowards.I am enough for you.” “You fought alone? No, you were afraid to have people around you to begin with because you are afraid of loosing them.“ and many word he said to Jiraiya, every bit of those word he said was also meant for himself. Many other episode and dialogue also start to make sense when you re-watch it after completing the series.
I almost dead rewatching this episode. Like I laughed so much I couldn't breathe, my lung is on fire just from the sheer laughter. Thankfully the Phoenix rises from the ashes
2:08 Love the imagery of Gintoki hunched over like he's bowing with Yaemon saying Gintoki sinned against Asaemon. Like, he really did nothing wrong, but the imagery is great. I can't believe Yaemon shot him in the nipple. "It's true: I am that idiot's daughter" is one of my favorite lines. I love how it goes right into how he meets Otose. Now all that's left is to see what he was doing between fighting in the war and giving himself up to save some rebels.. .

Yeah I don’t think the point was that Hosen was a good person, it was that he was a tragically messed up person, and that even after all the abuse she suffered from him, Hinowa was too nice to hate him (in line with her theming as the sun). Gintama doesn’t make you like it’s villains, but it tries to help you to understand them.
