Wonderful documentary from Japan about the potter Arakawa Toyozo. It was made in 1968 by Matsukawa Yasuo. For information on this director and his work see
www.yidff.jp/docbox/23/box23-...
If you are a fan of this director, you might like to take a look at another documentary of his that I've just uploaded. It is a beautifully shot (by Nakajima Yo, who also worked on Shino) portrait of Oshika-mura, a village in the Akaishi mountains known for its own kabuki tradition and for its sizeable population of alternative lifestylers. Sorry, no subtitles for non-Japanese speakers.

A unique movie showing Arakawa Toyozo in work and his thoughts. A lot of writings about him and his wonderful Shino has been made during the years, but this authentic and so interesting movie is a wonderful piece to add to the printed knowledge, how he found the actual place were the 1600-century Shino was made. How lovely that you showed us this movie! Many thanks!

Thank you so very much. I laughed and was sad and concerned and spoke out in defense of his ways. i cheered his dogged determination, and saw time past out of mind...I sat with my hands clasped, waiting the story to unfold. Beautiful.

No. One has to apprentice in Japan to truly understand this. The firing is very long and most people will not have the patience and fuel to fire the special kiln and the type of stone used in the glaze is available only in that specific part of Japan.

@@Alakwe i know how shino glaze is made today (more or less 😅). I just don't understand how he found the recipe to make his glaze like the one he saw in the old broken pieces made by the ancient potters...
