There's a lot of super cool science involved in this. I wish Smarter Every day would do a video on it. Basically, Steel has great tensile strength (think of a string being pulled apart), but it also has a memory effect to it. This means that it can flex and twist a great deal and still return to its original shape without damage. whats interesting about this feature of steel is that it allows the ship to move around the waves instead of pounding the crap out of the occupants and the cargo. think of this flexing as what a spring and shock absorber is in a car's suspension. when you hit a bump (wave) the force would transfer straight from the collision into the chasis and into you. when the ship flexes, the energy of the wave travels through the entire length of the ship and is spread out over a greater distance rather than on one single point, causing less fatigue and greater comfort. believe me, if the ship's hull was rigid and strong enough not to flex over that length, it would be massively heavier and cause huge impulses of pounding instead of a gradual twisting and rocking. -Former shipbuilder Hull Welder and Student of Mechanical engineering

Agreed, you don't think about a ship flexing but it makes sense. Buildings do it in high winds and during earthquakes. If steel didn't have some give it would snap trying to resist the forces against it.

JeffHK would you be able to get me contact info on who would make the choice on a fuel additive I have to offer for ships? We just sent a ship around the world and seen gains in excess of 20% on fuel usage and our scar test beats everyone on the market..

As an engineering student seeing the ship being flexed by the forces of the mightiest element of them all is so unbelievably satisfying. Its amazing how flexible steel really is and how flexible it has to be, because it all wouldn’t work if not. Very fascinating video 💪

My whole family was in the Navy USA. Most of my relatives also. I'm the only male who went into the Army instead. When I was released from the military and after college the job market tanked. I finally got a job working for the Navy Refueling Nuclear Submarines. I did that until they closed the Shipyard. Now I'm driving an 18 wheeler. I really like your videos. Thanks for putting them up.

@@abrahamjohn4397 Yes the U-235 doesn't last for ever about 25 yrs. In the United States Navy, Refueling and Overhaul (ROH) refers to a lengthy process or procedure performed on nuclear-powered naval ships, which involves replacement of expended nuclear fuel with new fuel and a general maintenance fix-up, renovation, and often modernization of the entire ship. In theory, such a process could simply involve only refueling or only an overhaul, but nuclear refueling is usually combined with an overhaul. An ROH usually takes one to two years for submarines and up to almost three years for an aircraft carrier, performed at a naval shipyard. Time periods between ROHs on a ship have varied historically from about 5-20 years (for submarines) to up to 25 years (for Nimitz-class aircraft carriers). For modern submarines and aircraft carriers, ROHs are typically carried out about midway through their operating lifespan. There are also shorter maintenance fix-ups called availabilities for ships periodically at shipyards. A particularly lengthy refueling, maintenance, and modernization process for a nuclear aircraft carrier can last up to almost three years and be referred to as a Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH).

People should remember that a huge ship like this one needs to flex, otherwise the ship would succumb to extreme structural failure, which would prove to be catastrophic.

I dont know what your ship is like but you can occasionally hang cots from the ceiling and lay on them, sconce they are free to sway they will move less than the boat and in a more stable manner, easier to rest...

A hang cot, or hammock, slung fore and aft does take up the rolling motion but not the pitching motion. A thwartship hammock takes up pitching but not rolling. As a ship pitches and rolls in bad weather one still gets buffeted around in a hammock. It is of no advantage except for space saving. Bill Irvine

What a load of rubbish. Obviously none of you have ever been at sea in good or bad weather. Hammocks yes, but not very comfortable unless you like lying in the shape of a banana. On ships the ceiling is the deckhead. can you imagine trying to get into a cot hanging from the deckhead in good weather, never mind in a storm. Stick to what you know about. don't let your imagination go mad. By the way most navy's have given up hammocks and fitted bunks on their warships. A bunk with lifting sides is as good as any other solution. You just have to put up with it, that's the life of the mariner.

I am in the Navy, and some of us hang hammocks in the shop during bad weather. The key is lying diagonally in the hammock and tying some elastic shock cord on each side to dampen the swaying. Our racks also have straps to hold you in. Sleeping while the ship is pitching is hard, rolling isn’t so bad. My rack was next to the hull on the port fwd quarter against the hull so I got to hear the water rushing by. Very relaxing and quite used to it after 13 years at sea.

When I was 6, my parents and I travelled across the South Pacific on a cargo ship like yours. It was March, so peak cyclone season and we caught the back end of one cyclone and the front of another that had been vicious enough to wipe out the wharf in Apia, Samoa. I remember going up the bridge with my Dad and him picking me up to see over the dash and it was a lot like the view in this video with dark skies and the waves crashing over the hull. The sound of cyclonic winds out on the open ocean with nothing break the gusts is one of most terrifying noises on earth, paired with the hull creaking and popping and boat tilting up to 15 degrees either way. For someone who has always been anxious whenever I’m on anywater vessel, the idea of having to endure that “never ending pitch and roll” for days is terrifying! I learned and trained to become an industrial mechanic on a shipyard, now I study engineering, I suspected for a long time that ships were far more flexible than they looked rigid. Those are some great shots showing prime examples of this, thanks!

Your productions are incredible. Some of the best work I have seen. The videography, the editing, it all works. As for crossing the Atlantic under heavy weather conditions found it to be quite relaxing, at least on a bigger ship. I did it once on an aircraft carrier (USS Enterprise), and then on a cruiser (USS Gettysburg). The rolls were nice and slow on the carrier. It really put me to sleep. On a cruiser, though.....

When the ship flexes it is not succumbing to the sea. They are built with flex joints so the hard brittle steel doesn't bend and break. It is supposed to flex.

Yes, you are right. I was on 3 Gearing class destroyers in the '66-'72 era and they were about 390' long and had expansion joints at the beam (widest point of the ships, about 40-45 ft wide), heavy rubber joints.

Right!? He pointed to them saying they were 8-9 meters (24 - 30 feet high), they weren't allowed out b/c it would sweep them away, but he feels they pose no threat. Okie dokie then. haha If I was on a boat, not even a ship, and that boat was overtly rocking I'd think I was gonna die - simple as that.

6 months a contract, but can extend up to 9-10 months which I do Entitled to 3 months rest, but i usually take just 2 all because i am rushing to become a maritim pilot! :]

I loved the shot of the flex in the passageways. That took me back to when i was a US Marine headed Into the Persian gulf. I was aboard the USNS Flint. Old ammunition ship, Kilauea Class. That thing flexed well. Not exactly a comfort inspiring thing to see on an ammunition stores ship. Good times though.

You guys are so lucky! That would have been my dream job, I don’t not gotten sick with Crohn’s disease and cancer. I spent my entire life on or near the water. As a kid I spent three months of every year in the summer at my cottage, most of that time I was on the water or in the water, I love it so much that I decided to become a sea captain, but just as I was starting university to study for it I got sick, and from the age of 20 until now that I’m 51, I’ve spent the last 31 years in the hospital, well, in the hospital more than I was at home at least, destroying my chance to ever pursue my dream job of being captain of a ship that big. It’s the type of thing where either you love it or you hate it but there is no in between, and I loved it, I loved it so much, I just imagine how many voyages around the world I could have been on already if it wasn’t for this damn cancer that has taken my entire adult life from me, along with all of my dreams and goals. Sorry, but every time I watch a video like this a flood of wonderful memories come rushing back, and then I get pissed off because I wasn’t give me the chance to fulfil my dreams, and now that I live on permanent long-term disability, even though I desperately want to, who would hire me? Who would allow me the opportunity to Captain a vessel that big? I suppose it’s just a pipe dream now, but it’s one that I stubbornly hang onto. But whoever shot this video, if you are indeed a member of the crew you have no idea how lucky you are, I would literally give everything I had for the opportunity of heading up command of a vessel like that. It gets to a point where the sea becomes your home, and you can instinctually feel the weather long before any meteorologists can tell you what the weathers going to be. It’s such a wonderful Feeling to be out on the water and free, there’s no words to describe just how incredible that feels, I just pray to God that before I die I get the opportunity to go on at least one cruise, especially now that I’m done having surgery because there’s nothing left to operate on, thanks for the video, and just be so thankful to have what you do

Tall ship sailor here, days aboard a tall ship under sail. We has hammocks rigged below, don't need to worry about pitch and roll with hammocks. Hell, it's actually relaxing to have the ship rock you to sleep.

I've hit some deep sea storms before and its such a fun ride. the big swells, water spurts all over the show, so glad I have experienced ocean storms. Its like on of those things you need to put on your bucket list. hold onto something in wheel house and enjoy the ride.

back in early 70's, did a few years on a 95' midwater boat, southern california, southern oregon, a couple deliveries on 80 - 95' fishing boats from yards in Florida and Alabama through panama to LA, hard to keep a camera operating in the salt water environment, awesome to see your vessel flex in big waves, thanks for the time lapse ocean crossing vid. keep up the good work.

I've seen lots of "ships in bad weather" video. I've NEVER seen a shot like yours shooting up the length of the interior, showing the flex. That was very cool!
