l sailed on three ships that had a regular run to Liverpool.. a shell tanker called the Asperella and two VLCC called Megara and Murex also Shell tankers…We had to be lightened first at Point Linas so we could entry the River Mersey… quite exciting steering a 200,000 ton tanker into the river….this would be about 1968 to 1972/3….
@@brianperry The good old days but a bit before my time! I started my pilot apprenticeship in 1977 so still remember the Shell tanks coming to Tranmere
This is my dream port eversince when i started as a seafarer, i was been in so many port around the world for long 20 yrs. Of working onboardship but never in liverpool even one time.

Liverpool. Nostalgia. 1975 : I was 2nd year ( nautical corps ) cadet of The Indonesian Merchant Marine Academy in training aboard cargo vessel, named MV Twadika. Afternoon, out of port. I asked a Police man, the bus number to down town. He told me the number and asked me, Sight Seeing ? I said, to see gun's shop. He smiled and asked me, to buy gun ? I said just look. He smiled, guns no good youngman, even him no carried gun. 1982 : I was 3rd mate aboard a bulk carrier vessel of 72000 tons of DWT haa ha with 10 hatches. 1986, I joined The Indonesian National Army ( Navy ) and many years carried gun, haa ha How about your famous football team, Liverpool ? I'm in New Brighton, by the marine pool. Those red cranes,I am able to see them right now as I sit in bed! If I'd been where I am n looking out when this ship sailed, I'd have seen it going out!!
Because The Mersey has a 10m tidal range on spring tides - that's why they built an enclosed dock system. Inside the docks it's permanently High Water 👍
@@michaelsrowland Ships can leave at most states of tide depending on their draft and the strength of tide and direction (flood or ebb). The lock will drop them down from dock level to river level
@@timnutta geographical location? What do you mean,? anything arriving at Liverpool port then has to be transported out by lorry to somewhere. The road network is bad and overcrowded. I would build a new deep water port somewhere else
