Shipping Container Conversion. Insulated Storage.
A little different video to normal, I purchased a 40' shipping container as storage for my joinery and expensive materials (timber and sheet materials). This will be a god send during those damp winter months, allowing me to store everything I've made in a nice dry clean environment. The video shows the complete process, from groundwork, spray foam insulation to electrics!

@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery Год назад
A vertical or horizontal stick with marks for each component, the vertical one for the container would be along the lines of a line at floor level, then batten thickness, OSB, open space then ceiling height, ceiling thickness, batten, spray foam, metal... Basically a cross section drawing but just using measurements for quick reference.

Excelleny video, I plan to do something similar and you gave me some great ideas on how to do some of the difficult things by myself. I plan to frame using 2x4's 1/2' away from the metal channel so the wood never makes contact with the metal. My end goal is to have 3-4" of spray foam (depending on the peaks and valleys of the steel) and 6-7" spray foam in the ceiling.
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 3 года назад
Thats what ive done, the timbers sit away from the metal everywhere. 2x2 was enough to be honest. if you orientate them so the bow of the timber is outwards, you can use a screw throught he timber to jack it away fromt he steel sides into a straight. 3-4" is a Lot!! whats it for? the 1" ive got really makes a huuuge difference and cant imagine youd need much more.
@jtr82369

BRADSHAW JOINERY I figured I need 2” min to meet the r13 code, but r20-30 can’t hurt. The research I’ve done seems to push the 2” min to ensure I don’t get condensation, I’m in FL so we are humid as hell. Maybe I’ll go with 2x3s so it’s right in the middle.
@keithhogan6997
@keithhogan6997 3 года назад
@@jtr82369 if you haven't already bought your materials I would suggest looking into HuberWood products, more specifically the Zip System sheathing. They have 4'x8', 4'x9' and 4'x10' standard sheets (brown) as well as insulated sheathing (green) with R3, R6, R9, or R12 ratings. I'll put a link in the next comment or you can Google it if YT zaps the link. They have a full product line that seals up tight as a drum. I hadn't thought of using inside a container, but after considering the cost of spray foam and any fitment issues with it I think I'll be using Zip myself. If you already built yours out I'd like to hear how you did it.

None whatsoever, i have a teeny greenhouse heater in there but its not quite enough, (55w) haha... it kept it arounf 4 degrees when it went to below zero for a few days. I think a bathroom type fan heater would be able to sustain around 15 degrees very economically.

Great video thank you for sharing. I have a few questions about your project first what is the thickness of your insulation or maybe the expected R value? What is the size of your sheet goods? Why use 18mm since it is not structural would 15mm have been enough? What are the finished dimensions?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
Thanks For the questions, Finished insulation is atleast 25mm, thicker in the gulleys. No idea on R value, it doesnt take much heating in winter and holds changes in tempersature for days! I used 18mm for ease of mounting stuff to it later on, and also wider stud spacings. Id say it was the right choice and 15mm would have been too flimsy. I will update with another video showing finished dimensions soon.

Beautiful shop. How did you fasten the framing to the front doors?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 3 года назад
Thanks, I drilled through with a 3.5mm bit and then used 5mm screws through wood and into the inner side of the box section steel. You could use self tapping screws

Loved this video! I need to spray foam my container just like you did but I'm not sure if I should hire someone or buy a kit myself. Was there any reason you got someone in, does them mixing it and spraying through their gun make it stronger or would a DIY kit hold the timber level just as effective or good enough? Thanks a lot Brad!

Great conversion, I love the OSB walls. What was the cost of the sprayed insulation per m2?

About £2200, same as container cost. There is another questions and Answers video on the channel 👍

@@BradshawJoinery Perfect, thank you, One last question, I must have missed it on the video but how did you get the electrical feed into the container (drill through the marine ply floor) or is there another way??? Also can I donate to your Patreon without signing up or anything?

Thanks for your sharing. Would you please tell me how you join the wood and metal in 8:21 of the video by drilling?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
Just a wood screw straight into the timber. It then hits the steel and pushes the timber away from the steel. Do from both sides to encapsulate the frame within the steel so it holds it in the right position for the foam to set around it. If you put the timber in so any bow in the length is outwards the. You can use this method to straighten the timbers.

Army green Huh ! seen enough of them in my day, :D nice use of the forklift to put in the ceiling plates well done, that's using yur noggin lad , get a anti theft lock box welded onto the centre stile , padlocks on the locking arms can be chopped off in seconds and any goodies inside gone in minutes, DAMHIKT ! :(( neatly done on the electrics too. Very professional work, I like that, are u using a storage space or ur workshop? Seem u could put a roof between the walls and ur continue and build a shelf for ur wood to stay dry?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 3 года назад
It's a storage space for delicate timbers and sheet materials susceptable to moisture. My initial plan was to roof the whole lot so the sheets went from the building to the far side of the container. I've not got there yet but great minds think alike 👌

Just 25mm is enough. Depends how long you want it to stay warm inside.

Thanks Bruce, ive had the container about 18months now, Its been a nice environment so far, i run a dehumidifier in there, not because there was a problem but im using it to acclimatize timber before use. Ill look up the paint, thanks

Grate video. How has the container been with condensation with hot and cold temperatures in and outside. does/ does not get a lot thanks
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery Год назад
Its perfect with the foam sprayed onto the metalwork there will be no condensation. Its always different temp inside, so hot day its cooler, and visa versa. Its brilliant.

Looks good! As you went to the effort of insulating internally it seems a shame that the cavity is not fully filled.
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 3 года назад
It was too expensive for storage. the air cavity behind the board will help a little but the ain purpose was condensation control and to anchor the timbers in place without through fixings.

I heard it’s best the cavity isn’t fully filled so that the cold air does not transfer over as easy. There’s lots of different theories out there.

@@BradshawJoinery Hi, I hope that insulation helped for condensation? Am I right? Cause I want to spray at least 10 cm, while you have around 5 cm? Thanx for answer.

Yes, 2.5cm will be enough for condensation. It works brilliantly!

That is truly amazing...I have never seen a human being work so fast - you must be exhausted! :D All kidding aside - amazing work - I will be doing this to a 20ft container soon and you have shown me exactly how to go about it. Thank you for the time and effort. Question, insulating it like you have - does this prevent the condensation from building up and keep things truly dry? I am looking to store books on shelves in mine when I get it done. No mold/mildew?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
Thankyou. Yes absolutely perfect inside.. obviously if you bring moisture in, it's a sealed environment so may be worth having some cheapo dehumidifier tubs in there. I use mine for drying timber so have a powered dehumidifier on. It is great though. Just like a insulated house.
