You're like the Bob Ross of sketchup. I could watch you virtually create all day. Cheers!

I learn something every time you have a SketchUp tutorial! Would love to see your process for making the actual crates!

Consider flipping your runners on their sides to give you an extra 1/2 inch. I use a pallet jack rather than mobile bases and have had some skids be tight for clearance with the shorter 3 inch dimension.

I had a big brain moment with our last move to use a box truck full of road cases to move our garage and electronics. I was very fortunate to have access to wheeled cases purpose built to move very heavy things.

You had me SOOOOO confused. Not the sketch up part, that was BRILLIANT!! When you said "long term like firewood" I was like...how is that long term? Then I realized you're going to STORE firewood in the boxes. LOL. Thanks for another SketchUp masterclass. I keep forgetting the diag line trick. And didn't know about the divide trick using the move function.

Hardest thing is getting started ... just gotta put your head down and the end will be in sight. Good luck, sir Bates! :)

I have NO use for the boxes, but dang, I learned 3 things in SketchUp AGAIN! - Thanks and good luck with the move!

I'm always inspired to open Sketchup every time I watch one of your videos. These crates are great for reuse. They will fit well on pallet racking if you put up a couple sections in the "RV" bay of your shop if you need additional storage that is easy to access.

Jay- id love to see the next step of this project! The cad/cam side of this. I have many questions. 1. Is there an easy way to export these shapes you designed to a cad/cam software? 2. On your tab/slots, when cutting thise out, do you leave any tolerances to fit them together? 3. Do you need to dog bone or filet out your corners to make this fit? How/where in the process do you do that?

If you have been shopping for your plywood/hardwood at a local distributor ask them if they have any "cover sheets" you can have. They might hook you up with some free sheets you can build your moving boxes with. Any industry area in your town will have free pallets. A lot of those places pay to dispose of their inbound pallets, they would be happy to give you some.

Ty for taking time to explain this whole thing on a shelf I can reach. I wasn’t confused when you thought we would be but at diff time. But I figured it out by what you were saying when you thought it was more confusing.

Hey Jay, look up collapsible bulk storage containers. Exactly what you are designing except in a plastic and a hell of a lot stronger and might be cheaper in the long run. You can also rent them from distributors.

Nice video. I am wishing you the best in your move. Things seem to be moving vey quickly. I appreciate how you think ahead on your designs. I never would've thought about the geometry of bottom piece vs top having a possible challenge with sagging when lifted with your forks.

Do yourself a favor and design for speaker cabinet handles or recessed road case handles. It will make lifting and stacking much easier.

I think, due to cost, that keeping them for future use is needed. But I strongly feel that future use should not be for firewood. If the only future use is firewood, then this is too costly to consider making. Stacking firewood, air drying firewood, taking out firewood for use... boxes like this design make each of those things more difficult than they need to, or should, be.

The floating Axies! hahaha I fix that by creating my own template and changing out perspective to parallel projection and freezing the view to "top". One of my gripes is "G" for component! That, sports fans, is stupid!

Hi Jay fellow Michagander, with your new build adventure have you considered going solar? I had 21 panels installed last August and getting battery backups this month. When we get the battery we should be off the grid for the most part here in Sterling Heights. Best of luck to you and your beautiful family

Great video. Learned a lot more about Sketchup. One question, why did you that flooring material, vs. some type of regular plywood?

Would love to see these cut out and assembled. Do you really not plan on reinforcing the joints on the inside? OSB, even Advantech doesn’t take screws into the edges well at all, I would want a vertical 2x2 on the inside corners for screwing the sides into I think. I’d probably also want to spray them with whatever partially full cans of paint/poly I had laying around, especially to reduce the amount of consumables to move. Cheers!

i shouldn't have watched this at 2x speed. You are so fast on sketchup. I am trying Fusion now right now though because the parametric modeling is so key.

When I moved my shop I rented a hydraulic equipment trailer which would lower the bed right down onto the ground enabling a pallet jack just to roll right on. Super nice!
