I stumbled upon this video as I was looking for examples of "hunting cabin shipping containers" for our son, who has a hunting property in Alabama. After watching, I subscribed to the channel. I love Matt's simple, direct and complete explanations, understandable even for those who, like myself, have little experience. Thanks!

I've really learned a ton from your videos. It's nice seeing a video like this every now and then however to see some of the fun leisure type projects that made many of us fall in love with this profession. I've been renovating my place completely recently top to bottom and it wasn't until I got to some of the finish work and the dock aka man cave til I really enjoyed it. I think many of us fall in love with construction initially over these types of projects so it's nice to slow down and see a video that still holds high functional standards but on the cheap.

We picked up 5 wooded acres in North Central Florida for $12,500 cash. It was never developed, but has some ATV trails across it. We are talking about putting a few containers on it, in a U shape layout. Then doing the outside of them with 4 inches of foamcrete. After we install the windows and doors. We will be spraying the roof with the foamcrete also. Then coating the roof with aluminum roof coating, followed by Elastomeric roof coating. We built a truck camper 7 years ago and coated the roof with those. No leaks and is still holding up very good. Your set up is professional.

I am planning on building out of a forty foot shipping container as a mobile alternative to an apartment. Lots of designing I still have to do, but your videos have helped me. I would be very interested to see more videos about shipping container builds. I think it's a very overlooked topic as far as construction goes and has lots of specific design quirks that separate it from standard situations.

Matt hope you have a great hunting trip this week. One Container for 4-6 hunters is pretty tight unless you spend most of it outside. Think about bring in a second and butting them together. At a past lease near Del Rio we had an outside Fridge that we stocked a tortillas, water and Peanut butter with a note saying it was free. Amazingly we never had a break in.

I am happy to see that you did have one shipping container video in your works here. I love the channel, especially the building science and products. However, I would like to see more shipping container content as I plan on building a large scale primary home from shipping containers in Florida this year and I'm doing as much research as possible on the best ways to go about my build, even down to making custom concrete counter tops and roman tile bath tubs to save money on things I can do myself.

great video for lots of reasons. People should look into insulating the exterior vs the interior. Steel is a conductor and you have to block the energy before it gets to you. I would use extrudeded foam and stucco over it.

Perfect for a small group. I would put a 3 season porch or inclosed gazebo outside to use as a gathering spot since it looks like tight quarters. I’d use this extra area also for cooking- move your stove/fridge and other appliances into there and turn the freed up space in the shipping container into more sleeping quarters

I like the security features they have 40' high cube 8'_9" 3X bunks work nice in, or use 52' intermodal, the 40' also come with side doors which I would recommend, get with security locks, isofast makes foam insulation that contuors to the container, reflex/mylar should be part of your plan good vid
@lakebum6211
@lakebum6211 6 лет назад
I've thought a lot about this. My vision is two 40' high cubes, side by side, insulated all around with a pole barn built around it. Cut out the center common wall between the containers with posts supporting and boxed in, making it a 16' X 40' X 9' (I think). Finish out the inside with minimal walls for bedrooms and bath. Well, it's a dream for my lake property.

Matt, I love the overall concept, and the execution is spot on for rustic form following function. Personally I would have more & a bit bigger windows and rather than bars over them I would use a roll-up metal shutter (cost about $150 to $500 per window, depending on how fancy you go). I’m really uncomfortable with the outer security door having a double dead bolt... too easy to lock someone inside by mistake. Hopefully you have a key prominently displayed inside the door in case of emergencies.

I would suggest putting the stove on the same side as the fridge and make a fold down table in the stove's place. When you're not cooking the table folds up and you can walk straight through without having to weave around the stove.

Everyone always zeros in on the 40ft containers. In military applications all our modular buildings are based on the 20ft CHU (Containerized Housing Unit). You get a good 2 person bedroom in a 20 footer, a 20 footer gives a good bathroom space with multiple sinks and shower stalls (hot water heater included), and two of them together make a good 20x20 room for kitchens and living spaces.

The only things that came to mind were as a few others have stated is tankless hot water as a huge space savings and maybe spray on a coat of supertherm on the exterior to reflect some of the radiant heat in the nine months of summer in South TX.

That's a very nice video Matt, thank you for it. Since shipping container homes are a very popular topic nowadays may I ask if there's any possibility you could make a video on converting a 40 foot container in a container home? I'm very interested in the build details: particularly how does one secure the insulation and inner framing to the container without piercing the hull, what insulation options are there to withstand humidity associated with container living (and obviously humidity control), window and door install, heating options, expansion possibilities (for when the family grows), special aspects (you may be aware of). I'm asking you about this because you are a proper builder and I know no one more qualified to talk on this topic than you.
@MrZpeppers
@MrZpeppers 6 лет назад
Just an idea for future builds you could have put a small utility room on one end for the pressure tank, and water heater that would have taken up less room, and I would have gone the extra mile for space and used a tankless water heater, also a zoneline a/c works way better in large areas, you can get overhead mounts that don’t take up a lot of room.
@skeetersaurus6249

Biggest issue I saw, was that BOTH security door and metal door were 'open outward', which means that if someone leaned ANYTHING up against that outer bar door, you couldn't get out!!! When you do double doors like that, the inner door needs to open inward, or the outer door needs to roll upward...so you don't get intentionally locked in!

A shipping container, although perfectly habitable, is pretty cramped due to the width. BUT, if you put two side-by-side (lengthways) spaced about 30ft apart and string a roof between them, you suddenly have the makings of a nicely proportioned starter home. 45ft square is just a shade over 2000sqft. The containers can have doors cut in them and serve as the bedrooms and bathrooms, and the open central area can be the lounge/dining/kitchen. Stack them two high and now you've got a reasonably big house. It's even cheaper if you can get hold of damaged containers. Insulate the outside with foam shaped to the contours of the ribs and you're laughing.

I plan to build one of these myself. My only worry is condensation when I’m not using the cabin. This cabin will be off the grid and not have power when not in use. I’m also located in Texas with high humidity and heat. How do you ventilate the container or does it need ventilation if it’s insulated on all the walls and ceilings?

I don't think a shipping container would be a vary good idea up north. the outside wall of a shipping container just radiates temperature too easily, and that means you need to build conventional wall structure on the outside of it to defeat the heat loose. So because you have to build a conventional wall structure on the outside, you just spent all the money you might of save because your building a shipping container sized cabin to protect a shipping container. About the only way I bother to use a shipping container up north would be, if the shipping container, served as a center structural element, and was completely enclosed with conventional structure around. And even then I'm not sure I really do that. you can stack shipping container like 8 units high and fill them with cheap chinese made garbage, and let them sit on ship in the rolling ocean. That's a super strong structure that should be able to hold up alot of house... But that means you are way over building you house, and could of easily and more cheaply built the house just doing conventional construction.. The only reason I still consider this method is try to build something tornado proof.. which I'm not sure this will provide any improvement too.
@baloneyjusticecheezedog
@baloneyjusticecheezedog 6 лет назад
I can appreciate the fact that your in a vary different climate from where I am, so I understand that how you did your shipping container works in your climate.. but In Wisconsin, you would not really be able to use this as structure. I am in southern Wisconsin, and right now as of December 31th, about lunch time.. it's about 1 degree fahrenheit. www.channel3000.com/weather "Container Side Wall Steel Corrugation" is only going to have a R value of .33. That not going to do anything but break the wind. The bare minimum you want any exterior wall to have a R value of 15. (You really want alot more.. but realistically most construction is 2x4 walls) That is normally achievable with 2x4 stud walls with Fiberglass batt material. Extruded Polystyrene has a R value of 5 per inch, so you will need 3 inches to give you the same amount of protection as 2x4 Stud wall. that 3 inch, bright salmon pink plastic might be water proof, but it still needs to protect from solar rays, fire, and wind damage. So that means it needs a layer of siding, and a way to attach that layer of siding to the structure to hold it up. I would say at this point, you need to do a cost analysis and decide is this the most cost effective way to build a shelter. No matter what, you have to build some kind of stud wall on the outside, or the inside of the structure that will be 3 to 4 inches thick. You no longer really need the shipping container to give strength to your structure, and to put it on the outside to save space your spending .75 cents per square foot for 3 inch thick Extruded Polystyrene. On the other hand you could just build that stud wall, and spend only.16 cents a square foot on fiberglass batt. And don't forget that up here in Wisconsin... we might not have the shipping container market you have.. At the vary least, someone might sell a beat up and salt damaged container for 2500 dollars, vs whatever you will spend on a nicer looking ones you get from have a major port hub along a coast line...

Already asked those people. They say they are happy they did it, but don't recommend I do it. www.tincancabin.com/2013/12/the-shipping-container-cabin-in-perspective/#more-1979 "For insulation I priced it with fiberglass batts for the walls (R13) and ceiling (R25), and extruded polystyrene foam panels for the slab. I wish there was another, more cost effective option for insulating shipping containers besides spray foam, but there really isn’t. The total cost for a conventional material version of my cabin would only be about $20,500 ($42/sq ft). The bottom line is that I spent an extra $15K just to build with shipping containers. I’m very fortunate to have an understanding wife."
