Shipping our 1985 HJ75 Toyota Landcruiser from Mexico to Colombia was a no-brainer for us. Our right hand drive Australian Toyota isn't allowed in several countries in central america. So we joined forces with our kiwi friend Tom, who also owns a RHD Land Rover Defender, to ship our rigs to South America and continue our journey south on the Pan-American Highway to Argentina.

How did we get here?
We're Cody and Olivia, an American couple from Oregon, who found a love for 4x4 driving and camping after we purchased a 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner. After exploring much of the American west in our 4Runner, we found our dream overland rig, a 1985 HJ75 Toyota Landcruiser Troopy, in Bend, Oregon. We plunged head first into fixing up and building out the Troopy with a lot of misadventures along the way. Finally in 2022, we realized we had an opportunity to live our dream of full-time overland travel. We quit our jobs, sold our house and all of our belongings, and set out on the road trip of a lifetime following the Pan-American Highway south to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Thanks y’all! Appreciate the ride along to new parts of the world! Those straps are what we use for small things like mowers, I would not even use them on a motorcycle…they sure missed out on advising you in that regard. But improvisation is part of the game! Be well!

Glad the two vehicles made it to Colombia ok, even if they were a bit damaged. What a good bloke Tom is - always a cheerful chap wanting to help out.

We're all heading to the same place on a similar timeline so we all know each other more or less. Nick and Mathilde introduced us to Tom as we both had the right hand drive issue.

Yes the straps are very thin and I wouldn’t of trusted them. But the way they hooked them on the wheels is what was wrong as well. The rocking back and forth of the vehicle would have made them hooks slide off. Would of been best to hook them on the frame or tow hooks. Sorry that happened! Tom is a legend and a great guy! Glad you guys reconnected love seeing both you and Tom on your travels. Go team LandCruiser ✊🏽 Jerry is cool too. 😆 Be safe!

hey guys, love the videos, we are also needing to take this route due to rhd, do you have any recommendations for shipping company? also how long did it take in total to get from mexico to columbia? cheers 😊
@gdayjambo

Hi! We went with Overland Embassy, but there are lots of companies out there. Total transit time on the ship was about two weeks. From arriving in Veracruz to leaving Cartagena was about a month. Lots of logistics on both ends.
@jeffhampton2767
@jeffhampton2767 Год назад
It could have been a lot worse. The shipping container could have ended up on the bottom of the ocean. Overall it was pretty successful even though it was a couple small issues.

Yes - unfortunately our 3 week delay waiting on parts (in a previous video) meant we wouldn't be able to see Belize or Guatemala with our shipping deadline. It's booked over a month out.

@jesmor3
@jesmor3 11 месяцев назад
thanks for the info, I'll probably be doing this route because of RHD as well! When leaving the Troopy for a while, were you leaving the top popped? Was that so the canvas can breath and not stay folded? I knew about battery disconnect but what other long term storage tips do you have for me? :)
@gdayjambo
@gdayjambo 11 месяцев назад
You're welcome! We did not leave the top up as our canvas doesn't have an issue with being folded. In hindsight, I wish we had put some type of dessicant inside the Troopy as the area of Colombia we stored it in is quite hot and humid. Also it was the rainy season so if you watch our next video, you'll see we had an issue with water intrusion.
@jesmor3

@@gdayjambo ah bummer on the water intrusion, I will take a look at the next video soon! Thanks for the heads up!

Next time buy your own straps to tie down. You need 4T straps per tyre
