A short video of the rich collection of shipwrecks abandoned in the Port River system of Port Adelaide South Australia
Below is a link to an interesting story of the ship owner of the Dorthy H Sterling one of the abandoned ships in the North Arm
The story of a family who experienced the high life and had it snatched away, and of a man whose undying passion for the great sailing ships was crushed by financial ruin as his beloved fleet, one by one, fell victim to merciless seas and the Great Depression.

Used to ride dirt bikes all around there and seen most of them, but this showed me the rest and their history. Some of them were younger than my car.

Brilliant vid! All my years spending summers at Largs and Semaphore, and now visiting my mum in Osborne, I had no idea these wrecks were in the adjoining rivers and creeks. Thanks for making it👍

Hi Steve, I was thrilled at this video and I never knew this graveyard existed. Despite that in 1964 I disembarked at outer harbour on the SS Arcadia and lived in Finsbury hostel, Torrens rd, and Semaphore. I was mad about ships. In those days you could get a day pass from the travel agent and board all the visiting ships while in port at outer harbour and explore the vessel. I got to see. Iberia, Chusan, Canberra, Orcades, Oronsay, Achille Lauro, Angelina Lauro, Castel Felice, Fair/sea,sky,star and Ms Flavia. All iconic ships no longer in service. When I was 14 I used to look out over the Gulf of St Vincent at the sun setting and see the ships on the horizon steaming in and out of OH. They were like jewels on a velvet landscape. So beautiful. Than you very much for posting. As I'm retired and living in the uk it's unlikely I will ever return and videos like this are just wonderful to me. James.

WOW !! Thanks James, Well I'm a Pome too and I migrated from Birkenhead England to Australia with my parents on-board the Fair/Sky and landed in outer harbour in 1961 I too have always loved ships my dad worked at 'Cammell Laird' shipyard and I did see a few ships get launched he took me to a museum in Birkenhead full of beautiful scale model ships. Always remembered that Nowdays I'm retired and I make short videos as a hobby Steve

@@Coolhand99au Good show Steve. I landed the day before decimalisation. I went to Croydon boys technical high school on Torrens rd. My dad worked as a pipe fitter on Torrens island power station. Work in the 60's was hard to find so we had to move to Perth after 2 years. My dad got a job for a short while in Wyalla. I think it was a rocket range. We up sticks and traveled on the train to Perth via port Agusta in the Indian Pacific across the Nulibor (No roads in those days). Just out of interest, I posted a comment on a youtube documentary about the SS United States which is in mothballs in the U.S.with no future. If Adelaide council were to buy it and lay it to rest in garden island it would become a licence to print money as a tourist trap literally a stone throw from outer harbour. Believe it or not I get home sick for Adelaide because it was the place where I turned from being a child to young man and those were the most vivid menories of my life. Catching the train from semaphore sea front up the main street, changing to go to Adelaide and getting off at Croydon. I bet I wouldn't recognise it now. Semaphore was a sleepy quiet outpost with a fishing pier and not much else. I see now that it's all commercial with a fun fair and like Las Vagas by comparison. Memories. Take care. James.

@@j.j.1064 Amazing James When we arrived in Adelaide we were shipped up to Whyalla that's where I grew up and got married and had a family I was there for 25 years then moved down to Adelaide Today I live in Prospect which is right next door to Croydon Hahahahahaha Interesting about the USS United States A private group here in Adelaide did raise a few million dollars to save the 'City of Adelaide' Clipper ship She is the worlds oldest clipper and is sister ship to the 'Cutty Sark' and in much better condition She is being restored in the Port Adelaide river Here's a link to a video I did of the ship ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pp2Fug3QC08.html

My Parents emigrated from England and ended up at Finsbury Hostel, Torrens Road. Late 50's I think. They went from a frozen UK winter to an Adelaide scorcher summer, living in the tin huts at Finsbury hostel. Dad's first job was digging trenches for pipes in the middle of summer, out of 10 guys that started, my Dad was the only one who stuck it out. Hellah hot working and coming home to an oven and sick kids..... but they stuck it out.

Nicely filmed and edited to tell the story of these wrecks. They were all once fantastic ships. Sad story about the six masted ship, she would have been incredible to see in her heyday.

6 stars for this. Just great. The city of Galveston, Texas got a hulk from southern South America. They rebuilt one and now she is a completely restored barque. Elissa is her name. Lots of stuff about her on YT.

Hi Jeffrey I checked out Elissa great to see a wonderful ship like her fully restored. There is a very sad story of one of the ships in my video of the six masted schooner the 'Dorothy H Sterling' she was built by the very wealthy Captain Sterling who sailed with his family on his fleet of ships He eventually went bust due to the great depression and steam ships P.S. Here in Adelaide we are restoring the oldest wooden clipper in the world the 'City of Adelaide' formally the 'Carrick 'the sister ship of the "Cutty Sark ' there are two videos of the ship on my channel

Great Video Steve, I have fond memories of fishing the starboard side of the Santiago from my 10foot dinghy complete with Seagull Outboard motor. The Bream would run through the deep channel with the rushing tide, providing many a feed up to 2.5 pounds a fish in the early 70's. Great memories. Great fishing! Ahh! to relive those moments.....

WOW ! Great to hear that Benson Yeah the Santiago would have been a great place for fish to congregate around I'm sure there would be some big Mulloway cruising around those wrecks looking for a feed

Yeah Mate that,s true it does seem like that The Dorthy H Sterling the wreck that looks like an Island now, was a large 6 masted sailing ship and its owner Captain Sterling who always sailed with his family went broke in the great depression the ship that was only around 4 years old was broken up in the Port River

Its the ex Murray River Paddlesteamer called the Jupiter. unfortunately she is no longer visible as mangroves have completely over her wreck.

Historic shipwrecks?? You mean pollution. Instead of being disposed of properly they were left to rot in the mangroves. Get caught dumping rubbish there and you are fined,, but no difference
